Maidenhead boss reacts to red card controversy and referee blowing for half time too early

The Maidenhead boss reacts after red card controversy and the referee blowing for half time too early in their 1-1 draw with AFC Totton.

Ryan Peters said he would ‘try not to get himself into trouble’ with what he said post match about the referee, disagreeing with the red card.

He then spoke of how the official came into the dressing room at half time to inform them of ending the half too early and needed to play out 30 seconds of the first half in the second.

Former association football referee Keith Hackett said via social media on ending the half early: “Should not have made that error. However the referee responded by applying the law correctly despite the inconvenience.”

Commentators for Maidenhead United said: “Referee blows for the half time whistle. I’ll make that a little bit early.

“Maidenhead taken the lead on 27 minutes with a nice flicked header by Alfie Pendlebury but the game turned on sending off for Josh Coley, very unfortunate in our opinion, high foot yes but he wasn’t to know that there was an midfielder coming towards him and he caught him on the back of the head.

“The referee decided that was dangerous play and sent him off. Maidenhead, they’re down to 10 men. Couldn’t quite keep going and a block clearance, fell kindly to Excellent Ikpeama in the sixth minute of added time and he planted the ball just squeezed through past Jordi van Stappershoef and we talked about frustration earlier, another frustrating half in the end for Maidenhead.

“Well, made their master their own downfall for the equaliser, but the gamers turned on the decision about 10 minutes before half time when Josh Coley was dismissed for the high foot.

“I’ve had the benefit of watching it a couple of times. I think Josh doesn’t really have the opportunity to see the player behind him, stuck a foot out to try and sort of control a ball that’s going potentially over his head.

“From the referee’s angle, perhaps he sees, you know, the foot going into the player’s head and the players obviously had to go off with a facial injury.

“So, we’ll hear more about this one, Keith but, uh frustrating not to get to the break with a lead that would have been merited and all to do in the second half.

“Yeah, no doubt about it. After the sending off, Maidenhead were the better side, thoroughly deserved their goal lead.

“But as I said, that sending off, like a lot of sendings off, has turned the game.”

Ahead of the second half, an AFC Totton commentator said: “Not because the goals have changed, but the referee has been told or has decided that he played 30 seconds too few of the first half.

“So when he comes back out, we will have 30 seconds of the first half to play. Game will restart with a free kick to Maidenhead.

“There has been a bit of an unusual circumstance happening, where the teams have come back out because the first half was deemed to have not been timed correctly so there is still 30 seconds of the first half to be played so the teams have come out with about five minutes left of half time.

“Resume this first half with 30 seconds or so, Maidenhead have a free kick which has been kicked out for a goal kick, but everyone seems a bit confused to what is going on and got me off guard.

“We are still playing the first half… and now the referee blows for half time. That is bizarre, I’ve not seen that before in my life I don’t think.

“Instead of going back down the tunnel, the players out, and the game will resume in about 30 seconds or so and the players change sides.”

Maidenhead boss Ryan Peters said: “I’m really proud of the boys today. Really proud because it’s the second game in a row where we’ve gone down to 10 men. I don’t think neither is a red card. Makes it look as if we’ve got a really horrendous record. But yeah, decisions have changed games.

“I thought we were we haven’t given the fans much to shout about for a little while. I don’t think our performance have been anywhere near where they need to be. But for the first however long we had 11 men for I thought we were really good and all we were missing maybe was a few more goals.

“Remy has a header from six seven yards out which typically he would he would bury. I think Alfie hits the post before scoring. So we had the opportunities and thought it was only a matter of time.

“And then the red card happens again and I still felt we were still going to be able to keep a clean sheet and make sure that we was able to get something out of the game. we make an uncharacteristic mistake again for the second game running. But um other than that, I thought we were brilliant.”

Interviewer: “On the whole, do you feel a positive reaction from Saturday afternoon?”

Ryan: “Yeah, absolutely. That was one of the worst halves that we’ve had on Saturday from a performance metric and so it was very clear go out and start from the first whistle which I thought we did. We imposed ourselves. We played with a bit of a style and a tempo, created opportunities and just needed more goals out of it. But yeah, once the red card happens, it becomes a little bit tougher.”

Interviewer: “You mentioned Remy’s chance and then Alfie did break the deadlock changing the forward line and the reward that came with it.”

Ryan: “Yeah, it has absolutely nothing to do with the personnel coming in or out. It was more we played with 10 men for a large amount of time on Saturday. Therefore, legs were heavy. So, we had to make those changes. I don’t think it matters which forwards we have on the pitch. The goals will come at some point. I know they will. And Alfie managed to get one in today.”

Interviewer: “And you’ve mentioned it the talking point of the afternoon. Do you feel that changed the game and how it was going?”

Ryan: “Yeah, absolutely. I’m going to try my best not to get myself in trouble, so I won’t say too much other than I couldn’t imagine anybody could foresee a red card coming out of his pocket. Similarly to the Saturday’s game, which I find really strange. And then to rub salt into the wound, he comes into the change room and says we got a repeat 30 seconds of the first half.

“So yeah, but I was really impressed because we have a more experienced lineup and it’s nothing against the personnel that we took out, but was trying to nullify those uncharacteristic mistakes that we’re making and other than the one that we made today, I thought we managed the game pretty well.”

@pbish79: The strangest of games. If you were there then you know. Not even sure whether a point was good or bad. Ref didnā€™t have a clue what he was doing. Couldnā€™t even read his watch properly! Mags worked hard, but lack of quality in that squad is noticeable.

@SimoesDavid: Lads worked hard in a game, totally changed by an overzealous referee. When both sets of players are laughing at him, you know you are up against it.

@patrickspiers27: Personally think itā€™s two points dropped, shouldā€™ve been 2-0 up before coley got sent off, which was a crazy decision. This was followed by one of the worst refereeing performances I have seen in a very long time, blowng up early and having to play 30 seconds extra is appalling!
