Luke Molyneux and Jordan Gibson excite fans with stunners as Doncaster thump Accrington

Luke Molyneux and Jordan Gibson excite fans with stunners as Doncaster thump Accrington 4-1 on the opening day of the League Two season.

Manager Grant McCann is plotting to win the title, even more so after his side suffered playoff agony last season, are a stunning second half of the season in which they recorded 10 straight wins to go from 19th to 5th.

And his players showed their determination to rise to the challenge as a Luke Molyneux brace plus strikes from Jordan Gibson and Billy Sharp saw Rovers surge clear.

Rovers: Sharman-Lowe, Sterry, Anderson, Wood, Maxwell (Nixon 86), Bailey, Broadbent (Clifton 75), Hurst (Sbarra 61), Molyneux, Ironside (Sharp 75), Gibson (Yeboah 75).

Subs not used: Lawlor, Olowu.

Stanley: Kelly, O’Brien, Rawson, Awe, Quirk, Conneely (Coyle), Love, Whalley (Martin), Knowles (J Woods), Walton (Costelloe), Mooney

Subs: Isherwood, Henderson, B Woods

Crowd: 7,423 (211 from ASFC)

“I’m pleased,” McCann said in his post-match interview, per Doncaster Free Press. “I thought first half we were sloppy at times, particularly in possession, but in the second half I thought we got a kick up the backside once they scored.

“We were better after and scored some tremendous goals. I felt the subs came on with the energy and aggression which is really important for us.

“We could have scored more: we hit the post and bar and Billy (Sharp) had a really good chance. We can’t grumble. It’s the first time we’ve won at home on the first day of the season for 20 years so we’ve got that monkey off our back.

“I can’t complain. Three points, four goals. The one we conceded was sloppy but it’s a really good start for us.”

On the goals: “They were excellent. The first one is a really good move. It got cut back to Luke.

“The second is a tremendous strike. He’s such a talented player. He can score when he wants. The strike was so clean, it reminded me of the one down at Gillingham last year.

“The third goal is a great finish from Jordan. And then it was great to see Billy score his 250th league goal coming off the bench to mark it off for us.”

“The game plan was working. We had a good game plan and probably surprised Doncaster with the way we played,” said Accrington boss John Doolan.

“The lads put a good shift in and everything was going right and then bang, we conceded on the stroke of half-time. Luke Molyneux pops up and does what he does, with a tap-in and then in the second half, a worldie.

“That goal was crucial, just before the break. We had done plenty of work on the opposition but Molyneux found himself in space, which we just can’t allow.

“We started the second half really well and Tyler Walton scored a great goal.

“The confidence started to grow for five or 10 minutes after that but then Molyneux comes in and puts one in the top corner which totally changes the game.

“We’ll stay together. We’ve got a good group with good togetherness.”

As mentioned, Luke Molyneux and Jordan Gibson excite fans with stunners as Doncaster thump Accrington…

@Johnhughes3006: Get out of here. Absolute rocket

@jjmckeon: You dont save those

@Bennyfoxes: A right goal that

@bluecarper: Humdinger ⚽️

@jkanalysis7: Luke Molyneux’s 2nd goal for Donny, wow. So important they extended his contract, especially with Adelakun not going back, honestly unreal. Was inevitable that Donny would get the win today, could be a long old season for Accy 😬 #DRFC 🔴

@Copps26RTID: Went today and Accrington looked really poor. Like really poor. They had 10 mins after 2nd half and that was it. I’d say cause for concern for them and their 211 fans

@MC_Thunda: Absolute rocket 🚀🚀🚀

@LukeHill_23: What a strike 🚀 #drfc

@maxbarwick_: player of the season incoming

@Bushford_oshay: I love this man with every fibre of my being!! 😍😍😍😍

@bendrfcsmith97: Luke Molyneux is a fucking joke😂🔥

@The_Lovebutton: Unlucky not to get the hat trick today. Coolly taken first goal and no keeper is stopping the second. I heard the ball is still traveling and is somewhere near Selby.

@JohnnyG12345: Wonderful goals Magic Man. Work rate was terrific from whole team. You won a ball late on you had no right to win. Future looks bright

@jt__drfc: luke molyneux’s fuckin mustard. between his goals, probably the only player who looked like making somet happen. everyone played well tho tbf and loved how many fouls yeboah won when he came on, exactly what you need from that kind of player. now ya gunna believe us #drfc

@Liz_Robinson_xx: Luke Molyneux is simply the best wide player we’ve had since Coppinger btw #drfc
