Liverpool CEO responds to reports they’ll sign Steven Gerrard so he can get Premier League medal

Liverpool CEO responds to reports they’ll sign Steven Gerrard so he can get Premier League medal, yes you really read that headline correctly.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are now 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League table and need just six wins from 13 games in order to secure their first league title in 30 years.

Now supporters want Gerrard to return from his managerial position at Rangers to play the required five games and lift the silverware he ended up missing out on.

The closest the club legend got to lifting the trophy was in the 2013/14 season, Liverpool were on course to end their curse at winning the Premier League.

Though with three games left of the 2013/14 season, Liverpool came up against title rivals Chelsea and that infamous slip cost them dear.

Chief executive Peter Moore has since played down the chances of Gerrard being brought back when being asked in a recent interview.

He told Soccer Laduma: “Let me explain what would have to happen.”

“So the question is, ‘can we bring Steven Gerrard back to get a Premier League medal?’ and the question I ask you is: which player do you want to cut from the squad to make that happen?

“If you haven’t noticed, he’s the employee of a different football club at the same time as well.

“Look, we all love Stevie G and we’re all very proud of him for his managerial career, but I keep seeing this ‘bring him in on a five-day contract so he can win a medal’ [but] it just doesn’t happen that way.

“Chemistry in a dressing room is important. Can you imagine that? That you have to cut a player, to say ‘you’re not going to get a medal’?

“It’s not like they’re handing these things out to everybody, you’ve got a squad, right? And thirdly, you can’t add a player to a squad once it’s locked. Other than that, it’s really possible.”

The former Liverpool captain has said that Liverpool winning the league will help him move on from one of the darkest days of his career.

“I think about it most days, a Liverpool team winning the league would help how I feel for sure,” Gerrard said on The Greatest Game with Jamie Carragher.

“When I analyse it properly, I obviously understand it wasn’t just that moment [that cost Liverpool the title], but still part of me in my head thinks it is.

“People say to me to make me feel better: ‘It was over 28 games’, but I still know behind what you’re saying to me that moment was so big.

“Brendan said recently that Jordan Henderson’s suspension killed us and it did… an own goal that Kolo Toure scored when we were winning at West Brom and drew the game and lost two points. All little things like that during the season, but it wasn’t at that time, that moment against that team, so that’s still behind all those people trying to soften it up for me.

“When Liverpool won the Champions League, I was looking around the fans thinking: ‘They’re all happy again’, it made me feel better again. After Madrid, looking around they were all sad again, but the Champions League last year was a healing moment for me.

“I think winning the league would definitely play a part. And I think also my own personal stuff with Rangers, if I go on to have a successful season, I think that will help as well, because that was a f*cking tough moment, even tougher than what people probably think it was. The only time in a 20-year career I’ve been numb, like my body’s felt numb.”
