Lincoln’s Lewis Montsma handed three-game ban after Joey Barton tweets anger at missed incident

Lincoln’s Lewis Montsma has been handed a three-game ban after Joey Barton tweets anger at an incident initially missed by the referee.

Joey Barton thought big decisions made by referee Tom Reeves for 10-man Bristol Rovers, played a key role in the 1-0 loss to Lincoln City at Sincil Bank.

The manager took to social media criticising “soul-destroying” calls made. Regan Poole’s 14-minute header was allowed despite James Connolly remaining on the deck after feeling the Lewis Montsma had elbowed his player. Barton has uploaded footage on this.

He wrote on two tweets: “Can’t guess and send people off. If that’s a red card, every week we’d have 4 players a side left.

“Don’t get me started on officials. If you think it’s poor at the top, you should see it down here in League One.

“Nothing given for the elbow from Montsma on Connolly.

“No offside given when 4 opposition clearly offside and heads at goal.

“Our player sent off for armpit contact.”

An FA spokesperson wrote: Lincoln City FC’s Lewis Montsma has been suspended for three matches following an incident in their EFL League one game against Bristol Rovers FC on Saturday 11 February.

“The defender’s behaviour in the 81st minute was not seen by the match officials, but it was caught on camera, and he subsequently admitted that it constitutes violent conduct.

“Lewis Montsma contested the automatic penalty for violent conduct but an independent Regulatory Commission maintained that it applies during a subsequent hearing.”

Ryan Loft was showen a red for violent conduct following a collision with Carl Rushworth.

But, Rovers said they intended appeal the decision and thought that the video evidence supports their case.

Harry Anderson and Aaron Collins saw their penalty shouts turned down before the time was up.

“It’s tough,” Barton admitted as per Bristol Post. “The goal we conceded is a foul, not that anyone will care because we’ve lost the game of football. It’s a rugby tackle in the box and where the ball was put in was where James Connolly would have been had he not been pulled to the ground.

“The official misses it and to compound it, we go up the other end. I don’t know what Lofty is doing, he’s saying he’s just trying to protect himself with the keeper coming out.

“The linesman, who is far away as anybody on the opposite side, decides it’s a swinging elbow and they have dismissed him for what must be violent conduct. We’ve got a few different angles that show the contact that was made, which was minimal if any, and we’ll appeal that instantly because we’ll need to if we want him available for Tuesday night.

“We’ll also be sending a few clips. MK did it do us the other day with Sam Finley’s retrospective ban, and there is an elbow in there from (Lewis) Montsma which is beyond the threshold for me. That’s why our players were aggrieved, but nothing given. The linesman misses it and it’s really frustrating.

“I think we had two (penalties not given). Aaron thinks it is and Harry thinks it could have been, but we were never going to get anything off the geezer today.

“Again, it’s soul-destroying. You will text Mike Jones (head of EFL referees) and the PGMOL will send their written reasons back.”

“Unfortunately we’re four defeats on the spin and we have nothing to show for it apart from the character and spirit which was shown by a really young group today,” he added.

“That will stand us in good stead. I have seen loads of things I am really proud of from my players today. I cannot fault them today and we’ll be better for that.”

Fans reacted with Lincoln’s Lewis Montsma handed a three-game ban after Joey Barton tweets anger at the missed incident…

@JoeBriley__: It’s Monday Joey move on, don’t you have other games to prepare for. You lost the game, which gives you four consecutive defeats. Surely you have more important things to think about like keeping your job!

@m4tt_h: Ludicrous decision.

@leeroypatel: I’m sure moaning about them constantly will improve things.

@Elmhart: That was quite a whack, and a deliberate one from the Lincoln lad. A definite red.

@tomcafc: As a Charlton fan, I can’t remember the last time I saw a decent ref in League 1.

@edlittle: If only everybody played fair and respectfully like you Joey.

@johnmat44609047: For goodness sake stop bleating Barton. You were seriously second best when the incident occurred. Why don’t you stay off Twitter and concentrate on preparing your team for the next game. Actions of a manager under pressure I’d say.

@Abohlman: An actual EFL manager taking to Twitter to post video clips of decisions they disagree with is very strange behaviour indeed.

@crablitt81: See it week in/week out. Contentious decisions I can swallow, but blatant fouls and offsides are overlooked relentlessly. The criteria and threshold for being a L1 ref must be ridiculously low

@thegas90: People might say you moan all the time , however it is getting worse . I can’t remember the last game i went to where there hasn’t been a terrible decision .

@RichyW61: playing devils advocate, how do you expect people to want to take up refereeing when they are getting constant abuse from the likes of you

@city2854: Still coming for us Joey 😂😂😂😂😂

@johnmarks1890: Very true Joey they’re mostly crap not even up to Sunday League standard !! The incidents you highlighted is typical of a lot of games in League one appalling!!

@DickieSawyer: Did you publicly shame your players for every mistake they made during the course of the game? I suppose it was the officials fault for all of your disciplinary issues over the years, did you blame the referee for your cigar antics too? Weak when a coach blames the officiating

@Bloor_08: Keep calling them out joey, the officials in this country are shocking week in week out, about time the @efl and the fa done something, if I done my job as bad I wouldn’t have one

@AaronDodds1: Joey, don’t expect you to reply. But, last week we played Accrington and had one of the worse so called officials I’ve ever seen. He cost us 3 points and allowed their players to cheat and time waste for the whole 90 minutes. Unfair on players, management and supporters.

@brandonjh14: If it wasn’t for your keeper, you would have been 3/4 down even before the sending off. Sort your own team out instead of trying to pick fights with our players live on on the radio

@rossco1883: It was SOOO frustrating to watch Joe, I saw the elbow on Beefy by 2, he should be done like Sam has been, the keeper giving it large to the fans cause we gave him some for getting Lofty sent off – it’s all wrong, referees should be booking these time wasters early!

@7760spitfirered: So, blah, blah, blah, what you proposing to resolve these issues? No problem with highlighting but you need to suggest a solution and, get ex-pros, you know that’s a non-starter already. However, player/coach behaviour would help too wouldn’t it with one of these incidents?

@MikeJabBCFC: Standard of officials in the football league is awful

@VoielsDan: As a Bolton fan I can confirm the standard of officiating in both L1 & L2 is absolutely abysmal, embarrassing.

@AdrianColes72: Something needs to change! I saw the elbow on Connolly from behind the goal and Lofts forearm push. They appear to play what they think with influence rather than what they actually see. Travelling Away every game costs a lot of money and officials are unfairly influencing games!

@duke_prunes: That elbow on Connolly should be dealt with, but Loft’s got no complaints – he left his elbow in, no matter how minimal the contact.

@ToKnee78: comedy gold, the biggest thug out there complaining. you should have nothing to do with football.
