‘Life of O’Brien’ – Swansea unveil new signing with much loved scene from Monty Python

Swansea City took to social media to unveil their new signing with a much loved scene from the Monty Python film Life of Brian.

Deadline Day saw Lewis O’Brien join Swansea on loan from Nottingham Forest, bolstering their midfield options after selling former captain Matt Grimes to Championship rivals Coventry City in the final week of the January transfer window.

The 26 year old is ready for life in the second tier of English football again, having previously done so with Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town earlier in his career.

STATEMENT:

Swansea City is pleased to confirm the signing of Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest on a loan deal for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, subject to international clearance.

Midfielder Oโ€™Brien will bring considerable experience to head coach Luke Williamsโ€™ squad, including nearly 150 Championship appearances.

The 26-year-old came through the ranks at Huddersfield Town, where he made 123 appearances and scored eight goals; helping them reach the Championship play-off final in 2022.

He then joined Nottingham Forest and made 13 Premier League appearances before making loan moves to DC United, Middlesbrough and Los Angeles FC; racking up another 23 Championship outings for Boro.

“Lewis brings a lot of experience and he is a really competitive guy,” said Swansea boss Luke Williams.

“He is a player who understands the rigours of the Championship, he is very, very motivated and he has real quality.

“He can take the ball, is a good passer, he knows how to attack the box correctly and he will compete for every ball.

“The players we have are giving everything, but to bring in a player who is fresh and has great experience and a real competitive edge will give everyone a boost.

“He is a great character and I am sure the fans are going to love getting to know him.”

Lewis Oโ€™Brien has vowed to provide aggression and fight in the Swansea City midfield, after completing his loan move from Nottingham Forest.

The 26-year-old has linked up with the Swans for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign, and brings a wealth of Championship experience having made nearly 150 appearances in the second tier for Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough.

Oโ€™Brien has also played in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest, and had stints in the MLS with DC United and LA FC.

And the energetic playmaker is eager to get down to work with the Swans.

โ€œI am really excited to be here. It was a chance for me to come back to the Championship, I spoke with the gaffer and he outlined the way the team plays, and also spoke about wanting a player who is ready to fight,โ€ said Oโ€™Brien.

โ€œI have played in a number of different competitions and leagues, and I feel I have taken a bit from all those experiences. I hope the fans will be able to see that when I start playing.

โ€œItโ€™s a tough league so you need that fight and aggression to be able to compete.

โ€œI feel like my energy levels are a big part of my game, I can play 90 minutes at the same level of intensity and I think that helps, especially in the latter stages of games.

โ€œI also think I bring composure on the ball, my ability read the play in defensive moments can be good attribute to have too.

โ€œI enjoy the responsibility of being vocal and communicating on the pitch. Thatโ€™s how I play my game. The more I can talk and the more I can help other players the better I play myself.

โ€œI think that is important in helping the team play better.โ€

Oโ€™Brien is in line to make his debut in Sundayโ€™s fixture at Bristol City, and will then get the chance to play at home for the first time against Sheffield Wednesday, and he is eager to show the Jack Army what he can do.

โ€œI have some memories of playing against Swansea. I can remember one game against Swansea in particular where we were 2-0 down in no time at all, but the one that stands out would be that game where I scored for Huddersfield!โ€ he said with a smile.

โ€œI do know what a hostile atmosphere it can be here, the fans really get behind the team and I cannot wait to play in front of them.

โ€œI hope this can be a positive time for myself and for the club. I hope I can push Swansea into a good position in the league. Like I say, I cannot wait to get going.โ€
