Marcus Edwards becomes Burnley’s fourth signing of the window

Burnley Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of forward Marcus Edwards from Sporting CP on loan until the end of the season.

The Clarets saw off interest from a number of other clubs to bring the 26-year-old to Turf Moor, reuniting him with Head Coach Scott Parker, his coach from his time at the Tottenham Hotspur academy as a youngster.

Speaking straight after signing at the Club’s training ground, Edwards shared his delight to be at Burnley:

“It feels amazing. Burnley is like a Premier League club. I’m really happy to be here.

“I know Scott from my time at Spurs. I know what he’s like. He’s ambitious, he’s driven. We had a good relationship back then so when I knew he wanted me to come that was enough for me.”

“From knowing what he’s like and how he is and the fact that Burnley is such a big club in general. It made sense.

“The main thing now is to get promoted back to the Premier League. I’m coming here to try and get myself into the team. I hope we can make it over the line this season and I hope Burnley fans will enjoy watching me play too.”

Born in Enfield, Edwards joined Spurs’ academy system at eight-years-old and after progressing through the ranks, the attacker signed his first professional deal ahead of the 2016/17 campaign and made his senior debut for Tottenham in an EFL Cup tie that season.

Edwards had loan spells away from North London at Norwich City and Dutch side Excelsior in order to gain regular first team football, before departing Spurs permanently in September 2019, signing for top flight Portuguese side Vitória de Guimarães where he played alongside Lyle Foster.

His first goal for Vitória, against Arsenal in the UEFA Europa League, came just a month after signing. He went on to finish the season with nine goals and was nominated for Primeira Liga Player of the Season.

After two-and-a-half impressive seasons with Vitória, Edwards earned a move to Portuguese giants Sporting CP in January 2022 and went on to make his debut just two days after signing for the Lisbon based club.

He went on to score against another of his former teams in the UEFA Champions League, putting in a Player of the Match performance in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

In his three years in Lisbon, Edwards totalled 120 games and 24 goals, three of those coming this season.

He now becomes Burnley’s fourth signing of the January transfer window.
