Charlton amuse fans with The Inbetweeners inspired new signing announcement for Alex Gilbert and Tom McIntyre on loan.
The Addicks bring in the 23-year-old attacking midfielder Alex Gilbert until the end of the season, who has been with Middlesbrough since joining in the summer of 2023 from Brentford but has found his chances at the Riverside Stadium limited.
He’s started two Championship games, and scored two goals for Middlesbrough on New Year’s Day in the 1-0 victory at Hull as can be seen further down in this article.

Tom McIntyre meanwhile has joined the Addicks on loan for the remainder of the season.
The 26-year-old centre-back joins the League One side who are currently only sitting outside the play-off places on goal difference.
He signed for Pompey from Reading in January 2024, but suffered a debut ankle injury that ruled him out for the rest of the 2023/24 campaign.
McIntyre has managed to work his way back to full fitness, however, and has made a total of 14 appearances for the Blues.

CHARLTON STATEMENT:
Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Alex Gilbert on loan from Middlesbrough until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old, who has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at youth level and is comfortable across the frontline, becomes the Addicks’ first signing of the transfer window.
Manager Nathan Jones commented: “I’m delighted to have him. We’ve been looking to add more quality in the final third and Alex provides that. He comes with decent pedigree having played in a very good Championship side this season, who trust us to further his development.
“We don’t really like taking players on loan, but when an opportunity comes up to add real quality, like this, we have to take it.”
Gilbert said: “I’m buzzing to finally get it done and finally be down here. I’m massively looking forward to Saturday. Charlton’s obviously a big club and from what I’ve heard the stadium’s really nice, so I’m looking forward to playing in front of all the fans.”
Technical Director Andy Scott added: “Our focus in this window has been on streamlining the squad to ensure Nathan has players that are going to contribute to the run-in and adding real quality to our team that improves us.
“We’ve been chasing Alex for a while now and we’re really pleased he’s joined us. We believe he has the ability to positively impact the team as he has done a number of times for Middlesbrough in the Championship. He has great quality in the final third, gives us something different in those forward positions and we’re looking forward to watching him in action for Charlton.”
Born in Birmingham, Gilbert joined West Bromwich Albion’s academy at U9 level and progressed through the youth ranks before moving to Brentford in September 2020.
He made his senior debut for the Bees in January 2021 in a 2-1 Emirates FA Cup win against Middlesbrough.
Having starred for Brentford’s B team, Gilbert joined Swindon Town on loan ahead of the 2021/22 campaign and went on to feature 12 times before returning to west London.
The 2022/23 season was a fruitful one for the midfielder, who scored 16 goals and registered eight assists as he captained the young Bees to the Premier League Cup glory, while also being named Brentford B’s Player of the Year.
A Republic of Ireland youth international at U19 and U21 level, he moved to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023 and made 15 appearances during his debut campaign – including a goal in a win away at Cardiff City in what was his first start for the club.
Gilbert arrives at The Valley having featured 10 times for Michael Carrick’s side this term, seven of which have come in the Sky Bet Championship, with the 23-year-old bagging a stoppage-time winner on New Year’s Day when Boro beat Hull City at the MKM Stadium.
Gilbert could make his Charlton debut on Saturday when Stevenage visit The Valley.

New signing Alex Gilbert shared his delight after completing a loan move to Charlton from Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough.
The attacking midfielder, who is comfortable across the frontline, has featured 10 times for Michael Carrick’s play-off chasing Boro side this term and netted a last-gasp winner in a 1-0 victory at Hull City on New Year’s Day.
“I’m buzzing to finally get it done and finally be down here,” Gilbert smiled. “Hopefully I’ll get involved with the lads in the next session, get training and get ready for the games.
“Nathan Jones has been a big part of the reason that I’ve come. He’s obviously a good, experienced Manager who has managed at a very high level, so it’s been good talking to him. He’s definitely sold it to me to want to come here.”
The 23-year-old revealed that there are a few familiar faces within the men’s first-team squad.
“I know Cov [Coventry] from Ireland – I’ve trained with him a few times,” he explained. “I was at West Brom with Thierry [Small] but he’s younger than me, so I don’t think we spoke much. It’s always good to know a few faces.”
Asked about his attributes as a player, Gilbert said: “I’d say I’m a creative player who likes to get on the ball and make stuff happen, assist goals and hopefully score goals as well, and do my best for the team.
“I’ve seen the lads play now and it looks exciting. I’m glad to be a part of it. I’m hoping I can only add to that now, help improve things however I can and we’ll see where we end up at the end of the season.”
Gilbert admitted he is relishing the prospect of making his debut at The Valley on Saturday as the Addicks aim to continue their play-off push.
“I’m massively looking forward to Saturday,” he said. “Charlton’s obviously a big club and from what I’ve heard the stadium’s really nice, so I’m looking forward to playing in front of all the fans!”

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Tom McIntyre on loan from Portsmouth until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
The versatile left-footed defender, who is also capable of operating in midfield, becomes the Addicks’ second deadline day signing following the arrival of attacking midfielder Alex Gilbert this morning.
Manager Nathan Jones commented: “Tom is a centre-half with a load of experience. He got in the Reading side as a young player and has played in the Championship for the majority of his career. He’s a real good footballing centre-half, one that can develop play for us and one that has real good experience and pedigree for his age. We’ve been able to strengthen and add a bit more balance to our defence with him being left-footed.”
McIntyre said:/ “It’s a brilliant feeling. It’s been a late one, one that was really appealing to me. As soon as I heard that there was a bit of interest from Charlton, I was really excited to get it done.”
Technical Director Andy Scott added: “We’re really happy we’re bringing Tom in. He’s a real competitor. We’ve had some very impressive reports on him as a character – he really wants to come in and prove his worth. He’s left-footed, a good footballer, brave – he’s played at full-back, centre-back and as a holding midfielder. It’s a really good opportunity for him and for us.”
Born in Reading, McIntyre joined his hometown club at the age of eight and progressed through the youth ranks to sign his first professional contract in the summer of 2016.
The defender earned his senior debut in December 2018 in the Royals’ Sky Bet Championship fixture against Rotherham United, playing the full 90 minutes despite fracturing his skull during the early exchanges.
He made 28 appearances in the 2020/21 season and scored his first Reading goal in a 2-1 victory at home to Luton Town on Boxing Day 2020.
The Scotland youth international was rewarded with a new contract in the summer of 2021 and he would go on to feature 117 times for the Royals before joining Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee in January 2024.
The 26-year-old joins the Addicks having made 13 appearances for Pompey this season.
