Leicester fans’ grim chant causes backlash as Fofana aims dig at Brendan Rodgers in statement

Leicester City fans’ grim chant causes backlash on social media as Wesley Fofana aims a dig at Brendan Rodgers in his statement.

After weeks of speculation and drama, Chelsea have got their man, but it has seemingly left a bitter taste with the supporters of Fofana’s departing club.

The French centre-back joins Chelsea in a deal worth £75 million in total, signing a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge. And the fans haven’t taken it well…

21-year-old Fofana released a goodbye message to his old team, Leicester City with some mixed messages of gratitude and snide remarks.

In an emotional message on Instagram, he wrote: ‘During these two seasons here, I have probably experienced the most intense moments of my young football career. I have grown as a player but also as a man.

‘Thank you to you, Foxes fans, for your kindness and your constant support, even in the moments you were led to believe I didn’t respect the club. I will never forget how we vibrated, exulted or cried, together… I will never forget you.

‘I chose not to communicate during this transfer window despite all the criticism and all the often false and misleading comments, even when they were coming from the club. I understood and I learned.

‘I didn’t want to damage the image of the institution and I chose to take it rather than answer. I thank Top for his understanding, thanks to the managers, to the coach who has always appreciated me, even if he chose to expose me a lot lately… I got it coach.

‘Thanks to the staff for their trust, their advice and of course, their support during my injury and my recovery period. There were ups and downs but I never cheated, you can be sure of that.

‘Thank you to all the people who work here everyday, you are the soul of this club ! Finally, thanks to my teammates, my brothers, the Foxes soldiers. We’ll meet again, on a football field or somewhere else.’

CHELSEA STATEMENT:

Wesley Fofana is a Chelsea player after today completing a move from Leicester City and signing a seven-year contract with the Blues.

One of the Premier League’s most highly rated young players, Fofana arrives to further bolster Thomas Tuchel’s defence for the 2022/23 season, following the arrivals of Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella earlier in the summer.

On completing his signing, Fofana said: ‘The two last days have been really big days for me and I’m very happy. I trained this morning with the team and it’s a dream for me. I’m very excited to start playing games for the fans and the club.

‘I’m here to win trophies – the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, everything. I came here to win and the club is built to win trophies so I’m here to continue that.’

After impressing in his homeland France with Saint-Etienne, the 21-year-old has further underlined his credentials as one of the game’s most promising all-round defenders with his performances during two seasons in England with Leicester.

He was named as the Foxes’ Young Player of the Year in his debut campaign in the Premier League, 2020/21, with one of his best performances in England so far coming against Chelsea in that season’s FA Cup final, as Leicester won the trophy for the first time.

Although he missed part of last season through injury, he instantly picked up where he left off on his return and starred for Leicester as they reached the Europa Conference League semi-finals, their only appearance at that stage of a European competition.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly said: ‘Wesley is a hugely promising defender who has already proven his quality in the Premier League at a young age. We are delighted we were able to bring one of Europe’s most exciting talents to Chelsea and further strengthen that area of our squad, both for this season and many more to come.’

Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, co-controlling owners, said: ‘We continue to build for success and a bright long-term future for Chelsea, and Wesley fits our vision perfectly. He is a player who can make an impact on the squad immediately, while at his age he will only improve further going forward. We are excited to see what he can achieve at Chelsea.’

LEICESTER STATEMENT:

Leicester City have reached an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Wesley Fofana for an undisclosed fee.
Wesley moves to west London after two seasons with the Foxes, having joined the Club from French side Saint Etienne in 2020. He departs as an FA Cup winner, having helped City lift the trophy for the first time in 2021, and with a reputation as one of the world’s most promising young defenders firmly established.

During his two seasons in Leicester blue, Wesley made 52 appearances for the Club, including 37 in the Premier League and 11 across two European campaigns.

He departs with the thanks of everyone at Leicester City and the Club’s best wishes for the next phase of his career.

Twitter users gave their thoughts as Leicester fans’ grim chant causes backlash and Fofana aims a dig at Brendan Rodgers in his statement…

@CFC_Alex_: Worst fanbase in the league, think they are something they are not

@cpfc_samh: They’re honestly terrible even in jus noise, went away last season and we sang chants for a loan player over their goal music at 2-0 down

@TheRsView: They’re getting £75 million for him ffs 🤣🤣

@CFCKyle___: They are so embarrassing 🤣

@mattjafc: Need them relegated ASAP

@NotThatShaz: This is actually embarrassing. But we do have a pretty mongy fanbase so I’m not surprised.

@jack_cfc2003: Young Leicester player has aspirations and doesn’t want to be in a relegation scrap

@lcfcgeorgee: It’s very weird, but ofc doesn’t represent a whole fan base, can understand people going at us though because it’s odd

@dalesilvermat3: At least they didn’t smash the pub up this time?

@10Dazard: These man have never once respected someone who left the club 😭 insecure as hell

@aaaaaawinning: Sing about people dying quite often, did it against Derby for a friendly ffs. Mention there chairman though and this lot would be in tears

@JAMES77458423: Never understand why fans do that. Your club is bigger and more important than any player, move on. They are probably pissed to fuck anyway tbf

@N_Boultby: Sad pricks. Deserve every bit of failure they are having purely for their inbred fans.

@langersnffc: Leicester fans are weird man

@DarrenHorner9: Absolute state of this.. embarrassing

@mufcAH: Not surprised icl, Leicester fans always take it personally when players leave. Maguire gets abuse every time we play them even though he couldn’t have been more respectful on his way out, Mahrez is a club legend but he gets it too and they’ve even booed Kante before lol

@nffcry: They strike again. What did #lcfc expect? He wanted to leave, expressed that several times and they was knocking him back even after his head had been turned. The relationships always going to deteriorate from then on. Wishing death on him though, crazy.

@Hardyarnoldred: @GaryLineker Lovely bunch, your lot!

@Gardai_Ola: Was lovely seeing them shake up the PL and win it, but they’ve a properly despicable element to their fanbase, don’t they?

@Pulisicate: Weird that Leicester didn’t have money to refresh their squad until the transfer of Fofana. Idk how they don’t see that as a win.
