Leeds have last laugh over Preston chant, Daniel Farke slams decision and blasts PNE coach

Leeds United have the last laugh over a chant sung by Preston fans, while Daniel Farke slams a decision and blasts the PNE coach.

It became ill-tempered in the first half with Leeds 1-0 down after a 23rd minute strike from Brad Potts, the Whites felt the hosts should later have had a man sent off.

Midfielder Ben Whiteman brought down Jayden Bogle, fit-again following a hamstring issue, just outside the penalty area in the 36th minute.

Whiteman, who had already been handed a yellow earlier in the half, won the ball but caught Bogle on the follow through.

Referee John Busby spoke to Whiteman but he avoided a second yellow card. The controversial decision was met wit fury from Daniel Farke and his coaching staff fuming. Farke was booked for his protests.

BBC Radio Leeds pundit Jon Newsome said: “It’s very, very close to boiling over. The referee has lost control and, in my opinion, he bottled sending off the Preston man.

“The referee is out there to do a job and he’s not done that today. It was a reckless challenge, it was high and dangerous. It was at least a yellow card, there is no reason he can give not to have sent him off for a second yellow.”

“We keep pushing and pressing and the momentum is with us but the final ball is just lacking the quality,” Newsome added.

“Up until then the passing is right but it’s like when we get into the final third we get a little bit panicky and jumpy.”

On that incident, Farke said post-match, per LEP: “I don’t want to judge the referee today, I rate him as a referee and have a good relationship with him. I won’t judge, publicly. I was annoyed with the yellow against myself. There was a situation… Whiteman was on a yellow and there was a nasty tackle with a straight leg. It was at least a yellow, a nasty foul. I’m not claiming for red cards after the game, but he was substituted by Paul at half-time – experienced manager, and knows what he needs to do.

“But, it’s allowed for me to talk to the fourth official about why it’s not at least a yellow? We would have played against 10 and it would have been a decisive moment. I never have a problem if we have an argument with Paul or the fourth official, but what has never happened is that when I want to talk to a fourth official – that a member of the opponents’ coaching staff wants to get me away. I thought this was respect-less.

“I would have had an argument with Paul, but it’s not possible that a member I don’t know – I didn’t know his name, maybe he was the coach driver, tells me that I should sit. As manager of Leeds United, 200 games, I have achieved a bit. For me, we have the rule that just one person is allowed to stand and to talk to the manager. If Paul would have come over, no problem at all, but three or four are there and one tells me that I should go away and what should my behaviour be?”

On the game, he said: “It was always clear it would be a difficult game once behind. We should have scored the equaliser even earlier. We won all statistics and normally, should win it, but if you don’t score you have to keep your nerve and keep pushing. We tried so much with substitutions and changing the base formation two times and it paid off with a well deserved equaliser.”

Paul Heckingbottom said: “I’m really proud. This point doesn’t feel as bad as when we’ve taken points before. You can pick any out of West Brom or Sheffield Wednesday or Plymouth.

“I know Leeds are a very good side, and they threw everything at us. It just hurts because of the nature of the goal and I felt the way that we defended, it would have taken something like that, a bit of misfortune, for them to get it and for it to come so late, that’s why it hurts.

“We did everything right. They’re good with the ball but anything they put in the box our defenders dealt with and protected Freddie [Woodman] really well.

“The shots that came in were from 25 yards plus. Then there’s just that one moment. If [Mateo] Joseph makes contact, he doesn’t score. The fact is he’s missed the ball and then it’s cannoned off Jack’s back leg in the 93rd minute. It’s really frustrating.”

It was a goal of real quality which saw North End take the lead, as Osmajić did really well to charge down the right-hand side, before crossing in for Potts, who had ran almost the entire length of the pitch to make the box.

Hecky added: “The difference is a real pass. We do that in every game. Think how many times, I could pick on a game in particular – Plymouth away. We did that about 15 times and probably only got a shot three times, because of the final pass. The final pass matters.

“We’ve got a great group. We’re getting a lot of things right. For us to be at the very top, we need those moments of quality more often at the top of the pitch.

“For players to go on and be at the very top, they can go on themselves if they produce those moments. It’s also something that we want to stress all the time.

“I expected us to win. I really fancied us, but I said to do that we have to make sure that you get the credit for the work. I knew we’d work hard. I knew how we were going to play but then get the plaudits. If you track the run back, make sure you get the plaudits to tackle or block or win the header. If you make the run forward, make sure that you get the plaudits for the assist or the goal and it is those things decide games.”

Twitter users reacted as Leeds have the last laugh over Preston chant, plus Daniel Farke slams a decision and blasts the PNE coach…

@PNEFansForum: Cry more

@dan_leedsunited:
Unfortunately the game was too big for the referee.
He’s absolutely bottled it today.
I imagine another apology letter will be on its way already

@Kershaw444: Stone wall yellow, ref had a bad game

@Robertkas88: How the fuck is that not a 2nd yellow card? Yea we were off it today but come on that’s a blatant yellow card and lads off and it was so early in the game as well, wankers the officials in our country

@RJProduction3: Got the ball and momentum took him through can’t stop. Would you be saying the same if it was a Leeds player tackling a Preston forward ? No you’d be saying it’s a great tackle #pnefc

@Jxyden1880: Hows that a red

@eddpne: never a second yellow😂😂😂😂give over.

@LS11HonestyBox: @EFL. The fuck are you going to do about the refereeing performance today? Fuck all.

@catterallwhite: He really is a tit. Pete Murphy has got right under his skin.

@adamakc1: 🔔🔚 Always moaning

@tom_coulston: Fuckin hell that’s borderline red from Whiteman never mind no booking 🤣bout time we got a decision

@MathewForth: We were awful today, as we were at Blackburn, and nobody can blame the ref for that. But that’s two away games on the bounce that two clear sending offs have been missed. Things like that massively change games, especially when you’re struggling in the game. Awful, awful refs.

@dezza2542: A lot of us are struggling with it Daniel, red all day long 🤦

@bensharp1846: Shut up mate, if everything went our way today we was still too poor to take anything other than an unconvincing draw, if we was outside the top 6 I’d have taken this result but we’re top 2 and wanting to win the league or the bare minimum get promotion, this is every away game

@davepea37587268: Daniel also blamed the pitch 🤷🏻🤦🏻‍♂️
