League One club Wycombe Wanderers have given permission for manager Gareth Ainsworth to talk with Sunderland.
According to reports, it is understood the Chairboys would not stand in the way of their boss, who has been with them since 2012, joining their League One rivals.
Ainsworth, the second longest serving EFL manager, has guided Wanderers to promotion in 2018, and to their highest ever position of 1st in League One in September 2019.
He is a former player of Lincoln, Northwich, Preston, Cambridge, Port Vale, Wimbledon, Walsall, Cardiff, QPR and Wycombe.
Ainsworth is a very attack-minded manager, and likes his teams to play aggressively and with a high press.
Sacked manager Jack Ross left Sunderland four points behind the Chairboys in the League One table.
The Black Cats did approach Mark Robins to become their new manager but he instead signed a new contract with Coventry City on Friday morning.
After finding out that Gareth Ainsworth has been approached by Sunderland, fans took to give their reaction on whether they thought he would be the right appointment or not – see those tweets on the next page.
