Current bookies favourites to become next Reading boss

After Jose Gomes was sacked by Reading on Wednesday, we’ve taken a look at who are favourites for the job at the Madejski Stadium.

The Royals have slipped into the relegation and are without a win in six Championship games after their 1-0 defeat to Bristol City on Saturday. Take a look at who are the top six favourites below and on the next page.

6th) PHIL PARKINSON

Phil Parkinson is currently unemployed after resigning as manager of Bolton Wanderers with the club in crisis at the time. They were in administration since May, were handed a 12 point deduction for their first season back in League One and were forced to postponed one of their fixtures due to welfare concerns for their young players they had no choice putting out each game.

Parkinson has previously managed Bradford City, Charlton Athletic, Hull City and Colchester United, all between 2003 and 2016.

He’s also played for Southampton, Reading and Bury.

HIS MANAGERIAL HONOURS:

Colchester United
.
League One runners up: 2005–06 season

Charlton Athletic
.
Reached the League One playoffs: 2009-10 season

Bradford City
.
Reached the League Cup final (lost 5-0 to Swansea): 2012-13 season
League Two playoff winners: 2012-13 season
Reached FA Cup quarter finals: 2014-15 season
Reached the League One playoffs: 2015-16 season

Current odds on Sky Bet: 14/1

5th) CHRIS HUGHTON

Chris Hughton had his contract terminated by Brighton & Hove Albion – the team he won came Championship runners up with in 2017 – on the 13th May despite avoiding the drop from the Premier League.

However he won just three of their last 23 league games and none of their final nine.

He has also managed Norwich City, Birmingham City and Newcastle United (won the Championship with in 2010).

In October 2019, Hughton turned down replacing Nathan Jones as manager Stoke City.

He also said: “I do want to get back in at the highest level that I can but I’m using my time out well and very much making the most of it.

“I’m in the fortunate position, I’m not a first time manager or second time manager that is worried about where the next job is coming from and it’s a very precarious profession that we’re in.

“So, I’m all through all of that. I supposed I would be seen as a more experienced manager now, so I think that takes a little bit of pressure off.”

Current odds on Sky Bet: 12/1

4th) GARETH AINSWORTH

Gareth Ainsworth has been Wycombe boss since 2012 and guided Wanderers to promotion in 2018, and to their highest ever position of 1st in League One in September 2019.

He is a former player of Lincoln, Northwich, Preston, Cambridge, Port Vale, Wimbledon, Walsall, Cardiff, QPR and Wycombe.

Ainsworth is a very attack-minded manager, and likes his teams to play aggressively and with a high press.

Current odds on Sky Bet: 10/1
