Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough has said ahead of Saturday’s final: This is a big chance for the players, family and friends.
“Yes, we do it for ourselves and the team and everything like that.
“But players will be very aware of their loved ones being there and it is an opportunity to create memories for them.
“Mansfield don’t go to Wembley very often and haven’t been in League One too often. We have 90 minutes to try to get us there.
“With players like Stephen Quinn and James Perch, you can pile the pressure on. They have been in bigger games than this over their careers.
“But you have a slightly different approach with the ones going there for the first time. It will be the biggest game of their careers.
“It’s all been quite laid back this week so far, which is nice.
“It’s been a long time we’ve been working towards this.
“We just want to perform somewhere near our best on Saturday – that’s the aim more than anything else.
“It is more than ‘just another game’ – it has to be.
“It is the culmination of 10-11 months work and we have a one game opportunity to try to achieve our ambition that we set out to do at the start of the season.
“But if we lose it doesn’t mean it’s been a poor season. It’s been successful to this point. But once you get to this point all you want to do is win that last game.
“That one game at Northampton when we were very poor, that’s the only time there’s been major grumbles.
“The rest of the time I thought there were reasonable explanations to say this is why we were where we were and that as soon as we get a few players back we will win some games.
“We improved the squad again in January which certainly helped us and we are where we are because of that.
“It would been very easy for them to turn on each other and factors from outside can turn on the players too. But that didn’t happen and the players kept believing as they knew we weren’t far away.
“The way we finished last season, we played very well and we played very well at the start of this season for the first four or five games. So that gave us something to hold onto.
“It wasn’t as if we were saying this is what we want to do and we haven’t done it before.
“We said we did it at the end of last season, we did it at the start of this season and we just need a few players back, a win, and we will be away.
“The camp is buoyant. Win both legs of the semi-final and you can’t wait for Saturday.
“One thing you do remember from cup finals is people asking you for tickets and all the stuff like that. So you want to get all that dealt with early in the week so we can concentrate on the game.
“You also have to separate yourself from people going down for the weekend, saying it’s a great day out – we’re going to Wembley. For us this is work, nothing else. Just work.”
👏 We invite supporters to join us in applause after the 8th minute at Wembley this Saturday as we send our well wishes to Vale manager and former #Stags‘ midfielder Darrell Clarke.

Port Vale boss Darrell Clarke thanks the club’s owners, staff and supporters for their backing after he returned to work following a close family bereavement.
He said: “I am so grateful and thankful, so are my family. The love shown and the support from everybody at the club has been absolutely exceptional. The supporters and the football community in general….I have had tremendous support from the LMA , the PFA and continue to have that support.
“It’s not a quick fix. Loads of people out there who have lost loved ones tell you that it’s not easy. But certainly I am a fighter and my family are. The support and love that people have shown us has certainly given us the strength needed to return.”
Asked how difficult that decision to return was, he said: “I felt ready. It wasn’t on the results. Andy (Crosby) and my staff had done an outstanding job, really outstanding. Everybody has been in it together from day dot. It was the fact I felt ready, I had started being in and around the training ground a little bit more, just getting more strength.
“The boys and the staff gave me that strength and desire to want to come back and try to make that little bit of difference.”
He added: “For me it was a case of making my family proud. Making me be who I am. I am not the only one that has lost a loved one.
“There are many people in the world that have lost loved ones and you have to find a way of coping, you have to find a way of putting your mask on.
“My job is a football manager. I love my job and I want to make the rest of my family proud and work hard in memories of the other loved ones that myself and everyone else has lost.
“Our supporters pay their hard earned money to come and support the team and the least they expect is the effort, commitment and desire from everybody that wears the shirt. I think they have had that in abundance this season. We need to continue to do that whenever I am manager.
“You sort of build that rapport with your support base. I certainly had a similar one at Bristol Rovers where we are in it together and you are trying to get as many people on that journey.
“Don’t get me wrong, as a manager you have to win games to get people on the journey. I totally understand that, but they have a massive part to play. The supporters have done that this season.
“You can see that. You can see the love they have for the owners Carol and Kevin. They want the club to do so well and that has transpired in everybody being together behind the scenes and working hard to create that all important environment.”
Fans reacted to the latest ticket sales for the 2022 League Two playoff final…
ON PORT VALE’S TWEET:
@rcmandy: 15k tickets sold so far is truly amazing. Fair fucks to all concerned. Is there a reasonable argument for the EFL to have switched this final to The Britannia stadium? Right in the middle of both areas, less of a pricey trip for supporters and plenty of room.
@BenHeal32597073: Loads won’t get a ticket because they can’t get down there
@nodgers: Travel is proving the problem for a lot of people, hope solutions can be found and coaches from outside the area as I imagine most coaches within a 10 mile radius are already booked up
@stelawton1980: Come on vale, let’s fill the place 🤍🖤💛
@ED_PVFC: Need get more coaches on. A lot of comments of people unable to get down there as trains are expensive
@PicardyBreezer: Not too bad so far. With Friday being payday for many hopefully a late flurry can tip us over the 20,000 mark.
@lozzapvfc: Same amount of tickets Swindon sold for the 2nd leg apparently
ON MANSFIELD’S TWEET:
@JimmyRamBelieve: I would think Vale might push 25,000 in the end – if Mansfield get 20,000 that’s brilliant x a few like myself coming to support Nigel Cough with my kids – great day out – could go either way x enjoy in any case x
@asaplace: I reckon there’s gonna be quite a few red dogs joining yous for the day so could be loads more yet. Here’s hoping for a double celebration 🍾
@jabrooks85: Well done, 30,000 plus between us in 3 days is a cracking effort. Should get 40k plus between us now. Let’s hope for a great occasion, both clubs in a great place off the field and going in the right direction.
@ekingy7: Hoping for another 5k but at the moment that’s decent for us a little town
@kvpvfc: Fair effort lads. Should be a close match up 👏
@Will35136937: I’m a Forest fan but will be coming to support the stags 👍
@davethevalefan: Great stuff…from just a few days…we are exactly the same. Two good clubs and fans.
@moorvaliant: Going to be a great day, two great sets of fans, two good teams. Could go either way.. can’t wait. #pvfc #mtfc
