Last minute limbs as Brighton come from behind to beat 10-man Chelsea in stoppage time

There were last minute limbs as Brighton & Hove Albion come from behind to beat 10-man Chelsea in stoppage time.

Chelsea were one up thanks to Enzo Fernandez’s header just before the half hour mark, then soon after the break, Trevoh Chalobah was shown a red card for a desperate challenge on Georginio Rutter.

Danny Welbeck came off the bench and grabbed his and Brighton’s first of the game, heading in at the far post on the 77th minute.

Maxim de Cuyper then headed Brighton in front from a corner in the second minute of stoppage time, with Welbeck making it 3-1 from close range to seal victory in the ninth.

A frustrating run on results for Chelsea, who have now gone without a win since the international break, they drop to 7th in the Premier League table, while Brighton climb to 10th.

There were some boos from the Chelsea come the final whistle.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler spoke to BBC Match of the Day: “In the first minutes we suffered, then we conceded the goal and started playing football. We created chances, we were better out of possession, and after we conceded we played okay.”

On making the most of Chelsea’s red card: “Sometimes when you are one man up it gets more and more difficult because the other team only tries to defend. We stayed patient, we stayed calm, we played from left to right, we opened the gaps and we had some good moments.”

On Danny Welbeck’s brace: “I’m very happy for him because he is always there. He is a great leader and he got the reward for everything he is doing for us and himself.”

On recording three wins in a row against Chelsea: “It is good, but every game is very tough against them. They are a great football team and they have great individual players. It’s always an opportunity to prove who we are and it’s a big challenge for us.”

On whether this result can act as a springboard for the rest of the season: “When you only look at the results, maybe you can say yes. But if you look regarding the performance, maybe you can say no. The games are very tight. There are always small margins that make the difference, the small margins were on our side in this match.

“I’m sure that we can get into a good run and get into a flow. First of all, it’s about hard work and staying together.”

Maxim de Cuyper said to Premier League Productions after the win: “We had some good moments, they had their moments, but we felt in the dressing room that we could still make a turnaround.

“How we started the second half was brilliant. The red card is in our favour, but it is part of the game. It is an advantage. If everybody plays 100% you have an advantage, otherwise you don’t.

“We tried to keep on pressing high, tried to change the play a lot to get them running and we got the result.”

On scoring his first Premier League goal: “It’s amazing. You see the crowd going wild and it is the best feeling in football.”

Brighton’s Danny Welbeck, speaking to Final Score: “Brilliant. Everybody is ecstatic in the dressing room. To go one down and show a great reaction like that great character from the team.

“You have got to look after the younger players. I am enjoying the role, and I am looking forward to producing many more important moments on and off the pitch as well.

“Every single player wants to play, but when you’re on the bench at Brighton we have an environment where every single player has a part to play.

“When you do come off the bench you want to make an impact. It is a brotherhood, and you have got to push everybody along.”

On feeling ‘brand new’: “I wouldn’t call it brand new. I am feeling good, feeling fit and strong. I have worked hard every single day really, in training sessions.

“Throughout preseason, the off-season too, keeping yourself in the best shape possible. I am blessed with good genes from my mum and dad too, which helps me tick along too!”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “First we were in control of the game, winning, we didn’t concede anything. Because of our mistake we were with 10 players and unfortunately the game changed.”

On the red card: “I didn’t watch it back to be honest. If they decide it’s a red card, it’s probably a red card.

On his side’s poor passing: “It’s not a second half sloppy half, secon dhalf we were with 10 players so the game changed completely. We were defending quite well until the 1-1. It’s been one game but playing in two different ways. First half, completely for us. Second half, completely for them.”

On his side’s defending for the final two Brighton goals: “You can always do something better no doubt. I think we could first half have scored the second one. I think we can do better defensive and offensively.”

On how to turn things around: “Try to recover the energy and win on Tuesday.”

Maresca, speaking to Sky Sports, on whether the red card changed the game: “Unfortunately yes. After the Manchester United game [with another red card] I think it happened again today. First half we scored one, we created chances, we were in control of the game. The shots, possession, everything was for us.

“After six or seven minutes because of our mistake it was a red card and it changed the game.”

On whether he’s frustrated Chelsea didn’t put the game to bed in the first half: “Absolutely yes, the frustration is there. We scored one and could have scored more than one. If we scored the second one then even with 10 players it’s better to defend 2-0. It’s a moment where we are giving away a present and in football it’s difficult to manage.”

On how his side played when down to 10 men: “I think they gave everything. We defended quite well until they scored. For sure, after that we could have defended a little bit better.”

Here’s how fans reacted with last minute limbs as Brighton come from behind to beat 10-man Chelsea in stoppage time…

@Joebenno: JP Van Hecke today by the way! 😍 He was everywhere…. Never seen anyone want to win a game more than he did today! Superb! And he really hates Joao Pedro doesn’t he 🤣🤣 #bhafc

@SmithMustScore_: Performances can & will improve under Fab, but some need to focus less on the negatives & more on the positives, such as the number of points we’ve gained from losing positions. It shows the desire, determination & character is there. It shows the squad is together ⚽️🔵⚪️ #BHAFC

@LemmyG10: Second half turnaround… You cannot say Fabian Hurzeler didn’t have a masterclass in the second half. Yes, the red helped but my word was that win needed. Up the Albion. #BHAFC

@drunkenstylee: Great result but we need to now start beating teams outside of the big six #bhafc

@HurzelersHat:
You can take our players
You can take out staff
But you will always just be a shit brighton and hove albion
#bhafc #cfc

@bevmitchell2801: Considering the number of times we’ve been undone by late, late goals, it’s so, so sweet to be the ones getting those goals… especially against the team that lives raiding our talent! What a result! UTA! #BHAFC 🔵⚪🔵⚪🔵

@zhriszowen: Loving all the negative fans trying to justify their first half tweets. The thought of just enjoying a great away win is too hard for them #BHAFC

@fred_bhafc: WHAT A PERFORMANCE THE FIRST HALF WAS PRETTY SHOCKING BUT FROM THE 60TH MINUTE ONWARDS WE COMPLETELY DOMINATED CHELSEA MINTEH, DANNY AND JPVH TAKE A BOW GREAT PERFORMANCE COMPLETELY DESERVED TO WIN UTFA!!!!!!!! #BHAFC

@JakeTalksFutbol: WE’VE DESERVED THIS WIN, the ref tried to stiff us so hard that entire game and we get the win, I really hope we can turn this into some consistency now! #BHAFC
