Absolute limbs as Crystal Palace end Liverpool’s winning start with 97th minute Nketiah strike

There were absolute limbs at Selhurst Park as Crystal Palace end Liverpool’s winning start with a 97th minute strike from Eddie Nketiah.

Ismaila Sarr had put the hosts ahead after just 9 minutes, and Palace continued their dominance with Jean-Philippe Mateta striking the post.

Liverpool keeper Alisson however kept his side in it with several fine saves, while Dean Henderson also turned Ryan Gravenberch’s shot on to the post.

Substitute Federico Chiesa levelled late on, but Palace quickly hit back, Eddie Nketiah snatching winner in added time to send the home fans wild.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot to Sky Sports: “Very difficult first half. They did really well and deserved to be 1-0 up, we were lucky it was only 1-0.

“Second half it was the opposite. It took a while before we scored and we did with a few minutes left. But from a second set piece they won the game.

“If you want to compete you need a very positive balance with set pieces and even more in this league. It was one of our biggest strengths last season, now we have conceded two against Newcastle and two here. But this league is more and more and more about set pieces.”

On Crystal Palace: “Their game style fits really well to their players, They have a low block with fast players on the break and a big man in Mateta. We had a lot of problems in the first half. The rest of time we had possession but very hard to beat that low block.”

On the winning goal: “It is never ideal when you concede in extra time of extra time. But there was a sub so half a minute extra was fair. I have to check when they exactly scored but we have to defend the throw-in better.

“We take learnings from all the games we have played and we can take even more from a game like this.”

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner to BBC Match of the Day: “We deserved the win. We played an amazing first half and had a deserved lead. To overcome the pressure of Liverpool, they deserved an equaliser but I’m delighted at the reaction of our team.

“Every player is so important, all the subs came on to help us to win the game. I am really proud of the performance.

“We talk about our personality, we always go for the win. Everybody who is close to Crystal Palace got their reward today. The fans will have a great Saturday evening, as will the whole club.

“The players showed so much confidence. We made so many runs, the quality of the passes, runs into the box, it was excellent.

“We will analyse the game and take in all this positivity. I said to the players to enjoy this evening, it is the best recovery. You have to enjoy these moments otherwise you have to ask why you are doing it.”

Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah to Sky Sports on his goal: “I just tried to stay calm, got a good first touch and a nice finish.”

On the full time scenes: “That’s what our fans are known for and shows the togetherness of the group. We always keep believing. There was still time to play. The manager said to stay calm and you will get another situation and thankfully we did.

“There aren’t many teams who can create that many chances against Liverpool so a thoroughly deserved three points.

“We are just taking it one game at a time. We have a really good group, we will keep pushing and try to bring more success to the fans.”

Here’s how fans reacted amid absolute limbs as Crystal Palace end Liverpool’s winning start with a 97th minute Nketiah strike…

@cpdaren: Best limbs I’ve ever seen from a steward at the back of the Lower Holmesdale today. Top lad. #cpfc

@CPISAinfo: OMG love our team so much. All we’re going to hear is how poorly Liverpool played when really it should be all about how well we played and that we dominated and stopped them playing well. 18 unbeaten is amazing. COYP #cpfc

@LFC_Inspired: Fair play lads, deserved winners, would’ve been a crime if we got anything from that. Good luck for the rest of the season 👏

@McHardySimon: It’s October next week & @CPFC are 18 games unbeaten & have only lost 4 games of associated football in 2025 . Stop the world I want to get off 🏆❤️💙🦅 #cpfc

@danielwillms575: Best limbs I’ve seen at selhurst in a long while #cpfc

@shave_stuart: We need some help from the Americans now. The window isn’t just about now who we buy. It’s now more important as to what we can keep. Money going out should be first & foremost to what we already have. Everyone we have right now is so important to help keep this going. #cpfc

@crablitt81: Crystal Palace are living the dreams of all the supporters of unfashionable clubs up and down the land and showing what is truly possible. Fans of the ‘Big Six/Eight/Ten’ could never understand #cpfc

@arthurcpfc: What a club, I can’t even believe it at the moment, just unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable scenes. #cpfc
