King’s Lynn manager restrained when confronting fan after defeat to AFC Fylde

King’s Lynn Town manager Tommy Widdrington was restrained when confronting a fan after his side suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to AFC Fylde.

The Coasters picked up a massive victory over the Linnets, their fellow promotion chasers. Joe Rowley scored the only goal of the National League North clash game at the Walks Stadium.

Fylde looked more comfortable than their opponents and broke the deadlock on 58 minutes, with Danny Whitehead sending a pass on to Joe Rowley, who took a simple touch to fire into the bottom corner.

Nick Haughton looked dangerous and very nearly made it 2-0 after being given time and space to turn and shoot just slightly over the bar.

Adam Murray brought on Will Hatfield and he nearly turned provider when looking to pass a ball across the goal line for Luke Charman, but King’s Lynn managed to clear away.

In the last few moments for the game, the hosts had attempted to grab something, but it was Adam Murray’s side who eld on for all three points.

It all got heated com full time, with Tommy Widdrington getting into an altercation with a King’s Lynn fan, and had to be restrained his first team coach.

He reportedly received vile abuse from an individual while he applauded the fans at the end of the game.

“It was one person and everybody around him, once I’d said my piece to him and told him to get out, and not come back, was very supportive of what I’d said, as was everybody behind the goal and then back to here (the tunnel area),” he said, as per Eastern Daily Press and Lynn News.

“We want to be supported by supporters. Everybody can have an opinion, I’ve got no problem with that. It doesn’t mean I have to listen to it. But when you’re as aggressive and as vitriolic as he was, and he caught my eye, and that’s something you can’t do, I’m not going to lay down.

“It was not just to me, to the group as well, and if he wants to come and have an adult chat, when he’s sobered up probably, then I’ve got no problem with that.

“The fans have come out in good numbers on Tuesday night and 99.9% of them have been really, really supportive and I’m really appreciative of it.

“But the one or two that has spoiled it at the end and I reacted to, I apologise to the rest of the public, but not to the person who I reacted to.

“He doesn’t want to support us in good and bad times or good and wobbly times, then he doesn’t need to support us, it’s his choice.”

This is what Twitter users said as the King’s Lynn manager had to be restrained when confronting a fan following defeat to AFC Fylde…

@danzell33: Obviously attacking the fans was easier than attacking Fylde

@OscarPrescott17: Absolutely embarrassing at the end

@Dansuckling9: The lads have been here long before and will be here long after, you can’t lap the praise up in the good times if you’re not willing to take some stick after bad performances

@Dansuckling9: He was told to bin off 5 at the back and to attack the game, rather than attacking the game he thought he’d try and attack the fans, shocking that

@harrisben10: Vitriolic abuse? Not one word was said apart from “attack, attack”

@AndrewVenthem: Don’t know what was said, but Tommy Widdrington was coming over clapping and all of a sudden started pointing and nearly running towards someone, had to be pulled back by member of his staff, he then went away and a player was having a heated conversation with someone

Billy-Joe Read: Not a good example, especially when you have children watching. I am a believer in showing passion and wearing your heart on your sleeve , but he did take this too far and shouldn’t reacted. He wanted fans to pack out the ground , but if you act like a lunatic because you don’t like an opinion , then this isn’t really the right way to run a team and draw you fans in . Tommy needs to focus on getting a home tie in the playoffs, calm down and block the noise . And the team needs to improve on the pitch too .

Gary James Bennett: Losing the plot each time his team loses not a great example to his players club and fans

Peter Wilkinson: I think from what I have read is he doesn’t like fickle fans, stick by your team win lose or draw, after all the linnets look a good bet for winning the playoffs

Ben Watts: So he wants the fans there but also doesn’t like them when they are there
