‘Going for the money’, ‘B£st of luck’ – Barrow fans react to player leaving for Wrexham

Barrow fans react to player Billy Waters leaving the League Two club for National League leaders Wrexham on Wednesday afternoon.

The Welsh outfit bring in Barrow striker Billy Waters, for an undisclosed fee. This boosts their chances of winning a spot back in the Football League, something they haven’t been in since 2007/08.

The 28-year old has scored nine goals in 32 League Two matches for Barrow this season, but has now signed a contract with Wrexham until the 2024-25 season.

Waters began his career at Crewe, and has also played for the likes of Cheltenham Town and Northampton Town as well as Torquay United, FC Halifax Town and Torquay United.

WREXHAM STATEMENT:

Wrexham AFC are delighted to confirm the signing of striker Billy Waters from Barrow for an undisclosed fee.

The experienced forward, 28, has signed a contract until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Waters has scored nine goals in 32 league games for Barrow in League Two this season, helping The Bluebirds to tenth place.

On making the switch to the Racecourse Ground, Waters said: “I’m absolutely delighted to get the deal over the line, it happened quite quickly but I’m happy to get it finalised.

“The gaffer has brought me in to add quality to the team and hopefully help win promotion and to be part of that is massive.

“You can see where the Club is going so I’m privileged to be a part of it.”

Waters is a product of the Crewe Alexandra youth academy, making his professional debut in League One in 2013.

After 30 appearances for Crewe, he signed for Cheltenham Town in 2015 and scored 11 goals to help fire the Robins to promotion to the Football League and added a further 16 goals in the following campaign – for which he was named the Club’s Player of the Year.

That earned a move to Northampton Town, where he spent three seasons, before dropping back into the National League with Torquay for the 2020/21 season.

He scored eight goals – including two in the play-offs – as Torquay reached the play-off final, before a move to FC Halifax Town in the summer. With the Shaymen, he again reached the play-offs – this time netting 19 times in 47 games in all competitions.

While Halifax missed out on promotion, Waters followed manager Pete Wild to Barrow where he continued his good form in front of goal.

He arrives at Wrexham having made more than 300 professional appearances, scoring 68 goals.

And on Waters’ signing, manager Phil Parkinson said: “ I’m pleased, we were looking for another striker and Billy fits the criteria for what we were looking for.

“I thought he was excellent last year for Halifax. I’ve watched him a lot and he always looks dangerous around the penalty box and got 17 goals for them last season.

“Strikers are so important, you can never have enough in the building and Billy is ready to make a contribution.”

BARROW STATEMENT:

Billy Waters has today departed Barrow to join Wrexham for an undisclosed fee.

Waters signed for Barrow in the summer after leading the scoring charts at FC Halifax Town, hitting 21 goals in the 2021/22 National League campaign for The Shaymen.

This season, the forward has netted 9 times in 40 appearances for The Bluebirds, including a hat-trick in November against Colchester United; a feat that would see him named as League Two Player of the Month a couple weeks later.

Waters now makes the switch to the Racecourse Ground, where he will join Wrexham in the midst of a National League title charge.

Phil Parkinson’s side currently sit atop the table, thanks to a remarkable return of 94 points from 38 games. The Red Dragons are looking to put an end to their 15 year stay in non-league’s top tier and return to the Football League.

We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Billy for his hard work and contributions during his time at the SO Legal Stadium, and wish him well for his future career.

As mentioned, Barrow fans, among others, react to their player leaving for Wrexham…

@_AlexForsyth_: B£st of luck Billy 💰

@Bamber678: Who’s going to miss the target from 6 yards out now?

@disco_shippers: Ran around a lot for us, but didn’t score many. Bit of a weird signing.

@StuartAkister: Very surprised at that. Good business on our behalf imho, not good enough for League 2. Every chance he can’t even get in Wrexhams squad next season so seems a very strange move by them. Thanks for that 1 month of goals

@DamianReynold16: Wtf day ruined

@samadders: Strange one, quite liked Billy Waters. Money talks though.

@LRbix: Get them gone, please.

@morganzwynne: God I hope we do a job on these 😂

@tashkentterror: 😯😯💰💰💰

@blondiemcsmooth: It’s as if I already didn’t need another reason to add to my list of why Wrexham should suffer national league forever.

@james_harpin: Deary me.

@CUFC70: How bigs Wrexhams squad gonna be in L2 next year ? Gonna have loads of bang average L2 strikers sat in the stands when they chuck money at L1 players

@n4thanposss: So so average 🤣 cheers for the dough

@craigyjones17: Welcome Billy! Hope you enjoy your time here 🙂 If you score the winner against Notts County, you’ll never have to buy a drink in the town again 💪

@james_flynn: Imagine lifting the trophy after joining a club 94 points into the season. What a beautifully shithouse move.

@Rconnor_94: Plenty of salty replies on this but he’s joined a club that will leave barrow behind. I hate Wrexham as must as the next but it’s actually a very good move all round

@Jonny_Mc06: The maddest part about this is that of all the lads they could have had from the bottom half of the Champo and down, they’ve gone for Billy Waters.

@backofholkerst: Great bit of business

@Dazzapass: Going for the money 💰 but who can blame him. They are building something at Wrexham.

@Mike_Ellsmore: Weird one this. He’s dropped out of the football league after 6 months to be 4th choice striker there? No doubt he’ll be on more money and back in the FL by the summer when Wrexham go up but still, can’t see where he gets into their team

@lewis94_: Wish him all the best tbh, gave his all every game. Plenty moaning about him taking the money but who can blame him, footballs a short career, especially at this level

@jake82929: are u taking the piss rn

@LewisJamesHaigh: Eh? What the…

@Bluebirds20201: Hopefully got a good fee for him. Makes space for another striker.

@pj_butcher: Oh fuck off Wrexham.

@StuartandRosie: Out the blue. An offer he or the club couldn’t refuse. Thank him for his efforts and his 9 goals. He came across as a good guy but to be fair for a Nr 9 he did miss chances where it was harder to miss than actually score. Should be on 15 goals by now. All the best Billy 💙

@JamesHibbert11: Tbh sad to see him go gave his all every match but far too inconsistent so may as well get some £££ for him and can get a younger better quality player in the summer

@broady76: My money is on Wrexham going straight up next season.. £££££ money talks in football

@cheltmckenna: Wow that’s a good move for Billy grab some of that Hollywood cash

@NickBeach16: Some strange folk on here, he was fucking garbage. I thought he had some dirt on the gaffa to get picked every week

@Manaagh: If Wrexham have stumped up some decent cash for someone who is very hit and miss, it’s a smart move on our behalf. He’s contributed a few goals but he wouldn’t have been my first choice going forward.

@LiamStewartWFC: Big loss for them, caused us a few problems but again, money talks
