Kevin De Bruyne gets slammed for yet another dive – this time against Brentford

Kevin De Bruyne gets slammed for yet another dive – but this time against Brentford shortly after falling behind on Saturday.

In the 28th minute, De Bruyne floated the ball in and Haaland went down in the area. VAR had a look and rule it was not a foul.

Then De Bruyne goes down in the area under contact from Henry – VAR rules no penalty again, three big decisions in the space of two minutes!

Ellen White (Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live): “No, I don’t think Haaland’s is a penalty and I’d definitely give a 10 to De Bruyne [suggesting he dived]. I don’t think either of them are penalties.”

Before that, Brentford threatened in the early stages of the game, and deservedly got the opener 15 minutes in.

It wasn’t pretty, but the Bees didn’t care – David Raya lumped one upfield, Ben Mee won the header and Ivan Toney was in the right place to loop a decent header into the roof of the net.

Sue Smith on Sky Sports News: “It’s brilliant play from Brentford and it’s fully deserved. Ivan Toney is claiming it and it’s fully deserved.”

After that, there was a big shout for a penalty as Bernardo Silva scooped the ball into the box and Rico Henry stuck out his arm.

The VAR had a look. It was a really close call as to whether Henry is outside or inside the penalty area when it hits his arm.

It resulted in a free kick and De Bruyne stood over the ball which is positioned just inches outside of the area on the right side.

City continued to push on and managed to get level on the verge of half time.

Kevin de Bruyne’s corner was flicked on by Manuel Akanji and Phil Foden took the ball on the bounce, smacking an unstoppable, rising first time strike which arrowed into the top corner of the net.

Superb technique from the City player and the Premier League champions restore parity.

There was bad news for FPL managers as Erling Haaland was shown a yellow card for catching Zanka in the face with his forearm as they battled for a high ball.

As the game was nearing the break, City broke quickly on Brentford and De Bruyne fed Foden, who fires a shot from an angle straight at Raya.

A superb pass from Ederson saw the goalkeeper volley the ball out to De Bruyne to launch a counter-attack. He shifted the attack from right to left which ends in Foden’s cross being too high for Haaland.

Laporte also sent in a cross with hit the hand of Henry in the box and out for a corner.

Brentford didn’t do a much wrong in that half, but a rocket from Foden got City level.

Toney put his England snub behind him after just 16 minutes when he headed in the opener to give the visitors a deserved lead.

Brentford frustrated City throughout the half, who several penalty shouts go against them by VAR.

However, Foden slammed them level in injury time with a sweet half-volley from a corner.

Not long into the second half, Foden swung a corner in and Haaland went down. But it was Laporte who was in worse shape – bleeding from the head after an accidental collision with Pinnock’s elbow.

Laporte was laid on the turf before being bandaged up by the City medical staff, a 10 minute or so delay. He was bandaged up and played on.

Cancelo then took aim at goal from inside the box and Zanka deflected the effort behind.

The corner came in and Stones went down in the box. A a theme at set pieces. The set piece was retaken.

Laporte fired over from the edge of the box after a nice touch.

The game became more end to end, chances kept on coming, but to the surprise of many, Brentford went on to get the winner in the 97th minute.

Wonderful running from Wissa got Brentford motoring forward, playing the ball squared to Da Silva, who found Toney and he applied a simple finish.

It isn’t the first time Kevin De Bruyne was guilty of a dive, the one previous being in the 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday (5 November).

Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett heaped praise on Darren England for his positioning when Antonee Robinson brought down De Bruyne.

With Man City chasing a winner in injury time, Robinson clipped his opponent’s ankle and England pointed to the spot.

Substitute Erling Haaland converted from the spot to secure a crucial three points for Pep Guardiola’s side.

“The referee is in a great position,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“It’s a bit of a dolphin dive and an exaggeration in order to get the free-kick but he’s caught him and he’s gone down.

“This is a relatively young referee who has bedded into the competition.

“The only advice I would give the referee, if anything, is I can’t understand why he suddenly stops about 15 yards from the penalty area to make those decisions.

“What he needs to do is continue his run. So when he actually makes his decision it looks as if he’s closer to the incident. I’d like him to improve his positioning in regard to his performance.

“Overall I actually think he did what he had to do.

“It’s a light touch and an exaggeration to get the penalty kick. This is the difficult part of officiating, that’s why you have to be in good positions, which he was.

“He had a clear view and it’s a foul.”

Twitter users reacted as Kevin De Bruyne gets slammed for yet another dive – this time against Brentford…

@OJSarpong: That’s a dive. Why is De Bruyne not getting a yellow card?

@DeeWalt79: @KevinDeBruyne git booked for that shameful dive? Saka got booked for getting kicked

@JLuck42: How is De Bruyne not booked for a dive there?

@HitenPatel13: That’s a dive by De Bruyne! Should have been carded there.

@GoonerInDetroit: Representing Belgium’s Dive Team At The 2024 Olympics: Kevin De Bruyne 🥇

@chrisffcuk: So what exactly was the difference between the De Bruyne dive/contact today or the De Bruyne dive/contact against Fulham? One a penalty one not. 🤷‍♂️

@JayT2806: What the fuck was that dive from De Bruyne again 🤢

@TacticalArteta: De Bruyne starting to be so unlikeable. Starting to dive for penalties.

@SamW_AFC: Saka gets booked for getting fouled but De Bruyne can dive as much as he wants apparently.

@rycmrn: What a player De Bruyne is but that is an absolute disgrace of a dive, two weeks in a row he’s flung himself down.

@SeeingRedv2: Second dive in a week from De Bruyne.

@WillieLopezShow: Starting to lose respect for Kevin De Bruyne from Manchester City for his embellishments! He was able to get away with a “dive” last week which earned them a bogus Penalty Kick & subsequent victory! Tried to do the same just moments ago against Brentford! He is too good for that!

@PatByrned: De Bruyne a diving cunt again.

@VineyBee: 2 of the best players in the world in Haaland and De Bruyne resorting to diving and appealing for everything against little old Brentford 🤣

@jimmyjax60: De Bruyne diving shithead

@weecoulter: De Bruyne diving again. Pathetic

@paddyspants (Replying to @GaryLineker): You actually gonna mention De Bruyne diving again this week or completely ignore it like last week

@MikeLee_1994: De Bruyne with one of those blatant dives you’ll ever see. Players will keep on diving because they’re very rarely punished for it. Make a statement, book him. It’s a joke.

@Sibley23: Commentator saying no point in diving in the modern game is nonsense. If there was a slight touch and the ref fell for it then it wouldn’t get overruled. See De Bruyne last week.

@RyanWells1509: @BBCMOTD @GaryLineker are you actually going to mention the blatant diving that @KevinDeBruyne has added to his game this week? 🤷🏼‍♂️ becoming quite the party piece now.

@TeejJackson: @ManCity fucking doing my head trying to claim every fucking decision in box. De Bruyne still diving about like a prick.

@Dazzer0306: De Bruyne diving again I see 🙄 #FFC
