Keeper Ben Wilson speaks on scoring equaliser as Coventry upload video showing if he handled ball

Keeper Ben Wilson speaks on scoring his very late equaliser as Coventry City themselves upload video showing if he handled the ball.

The 30 year old made it 1-1 in the fifth minute of injury time, but it left Blackburn angry, claiming for handball though the referee allowed the goal to stand.

After a Sam Gallagher guided header six minutes before half time, the Sky Blues were on course to blow their chances of making the top six.

Mark Robins’ men, who had not produced a single shot during the first half of the match, came alive in the closing stages.

Wilson, ready for the final attack of the day, headed a Gustavo Hamer cross over the line, to grab a remarkable goal that could prove decisive by the end of the year.

Sky Blues goalkeeper Ben Wilson could scarcely believe he was the man to force home a last-minute equaliser to snatch a point away at Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night.

The 30-year-old, who signed a new contract with the club earlier this season, went up for a late corner a forced home a Gustavo Hamer cross to level the game.

Wilson made a number of important saved over the 90 minutes and spoke of his pride at full-time, after being the man to find the net.

On the game and the result at Ewood Park, Wilson said to the club website: “They were a good side but the game wasn’t done and we kept digging in. We weren’t great during the first half but we came out fighting after that. We got what we deserved in the end.”

On his late goal: “I was looking over, creeping to the halfway line, and the Gaffer was looking at his watch. I was thinking: ‘Awey, Gaffer!’

“Five minutes before that I had envisaged myself scoring an overhead kick. I’m not even joking.

“The corner was great and there I was, to score a great goal. I rose like a salmon, took it down, and it rolled in off my knee.

“I wanted to make myself a nuisance but I will take what happened. I was ecstatic.

“I was lifting my top off to take it off but I looked behind me and nobody was following me. The emotions were all over the shop. I’ve lost my voice. I was buzzing and it was what we deserved.”

On the final three games: “We have momentum again. We’re unbeaten in three and we’re confident in our ability.

“We need to take each game as it comes. We have a right chance.”

Mark Robins praised his goalkeeping coach Aled Williams’ role in Coventry’s dramatic last-minute win over Blackburn Rovers.

Williams revealed that he suggested to Ben Wilson that he go up for a corner at Ewood Park, where he scored the controversial goal.

Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson was adamant Wilson bundled the ball in with his hand but when that was put to Robins, he said: “Well he is a goalie!”

He added: “I have just seen it close up. There’s a melee and what it does do is hit his knee and go in, but why moan? They should have seen the game out but they didn’t. We got little bit of luck but you make your own don’t you.

“Aled said to me do you want Ben to go up for the corner and for a split second I though, yeah, we have got to do it because it might just cause a little bit of mayhem in the box, which it did. And credit to Aled and credit to Ben who actually went between the sticks and went in where the striker should be and ended up getting a goal. Funny that!

“I’m really pleased to get the goal back at that stage and I think we deserved it for the second half performance. The first half we deserved nothing. I didn’t like it at all.”

He added: “That’s the worst I have seen us play. I don’t know what happened, I have got to say, whether it’s a bit of fear or what.

“In terms of counter pressing they are top of the division at the moment, so we knew that was coming but you have to work as hard as them to create the space for ourselves but every time we won the ball back we gave it away.

“And we gave them encouragement because they were there for the taking, so I was really disappointed and frustrated in the first half, and they hadn’t created a massive amount. We just kept giving the ball away, but they did as well, so whether it was the circumstance or what was on the game because all of a sudden we’re involved in the end of the table with four games to go when nobody had spoken about us being there.

“But we have earned the right to be there and if you have done that you have to go without any fear and take what might be there and what might be on offer for you. But we just didn’t do that and deservedly went in a goal down at half-time.

“I was desperate to get to half-time at 0-0 and if we had done that I think things would have been different because we did enough in the second half and if we’d played like that in the first half we’d have done enough to win the game.”
