Kalvin Phillips brilliantly hits back to Gabby Agbonlahor’s tweet

Kalvin Phillips brilliantly hits back to Gabby Agbonlahor’s tweet after Leeds came out victorious with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Friday.

This game has plenty of history behind it, even more so for that memorable moment in the 2018/19 season which saw Marcelo Bielsa allow Villa to score.

The Aregntine ordered his players to allow Albert Adomah a free shot on goal as Mateusz Klich scored for Leeds despite Jonathan Kodjia, the Villa forward, going down injured.

A lot was riding on Friday night’s fixture despite it being early on in the new season, Leeds were coming off the back of a 1-0 defeat by Wolves, whilst Aston Villa produced that shock 7-2 win against Liverpool.

On the day of the Premier League clash, former Villa player Gabriel Agbonlahor took to his social media account, writing “Good morning to everyone but Leeds fans.”

Villa came into Friday’s game having won their first four games of a league campaign for the first time since 1930-31.

Patrick Bamford’s first Premier League hat-trick takes him to six goals for the season, preventing the hosts making it a club record five victories on the spin to open their season.

The win takes the Whites up to 3rd in the Premier League table, a place behind Aston Villa in second.

After the game, Kalvin Phillips, who is out injured, quoted retweeted Gabby, saying: “Goodnight to all Leeds fans. Sleep tight @officialga11”

Gabby replied to Kalvin’s tweet with laughing crying emojis.

Agbonlahor also wrote: “Great Perfomance by Leeds yesterday. And well done Bamford. Nothing feels better than scoring a premier league hatrick against a top 4 club.

Gabby, a new talkSPORT pundit, was mocked by Leeds fans, after he described Leeds as a myth, urging pundits to ‘get out of Marcelo Bielsa’s arse’.

Elaborating on his rant about Leeds on talkSPORT last Tuesday, Agbonlahor had insisted praise should be directed towards Villa boss Dean Smith instead of Bielsa.

Agbonlahor said: “Everyone is getting excited about Bielsa, but if you’re getting that excited by Bielsa, you must be putting the red carpet down for Dean Smith.

“Maybe because he’s English we don’t get too excited by him, but what he’s doing, tactics-wise, at Aston Villa, he deserves a lot of credit.

“I feel like people need to calm down with Leeds United at the moment.”

As you can imagine, Leeds took great pleasure in ruining Agbonlahor’s Friday night.

They tweeted his comments alongside an image of Bamford celebrating his third goal, with the caption: “How it started… how it ended.”

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith said: “I’ve said to the players that I have only been disappointed with 40 minutes of football this season. I was frustrated with the second-half performance as I thought at half-time the game was pretty even, we had chances and they had chances.

“I told them I was disappointed with our reaction to their first goal as I thought it was pretty even up to then, then after that our reactions weren’t what they should be.

“Jack [Grealish] has been great this season and he had a great chance and then they went down the other end and scored.

“After that, we lost a yard and they gained a yard and looked a very good team, while we looked a poor team. We were lucky to get away with three actually the way the last 25 minutes went.

“But you have to give credit to Leeds, I thought they were excellent with their one-touch passing and they comfortably beat us in the second half.”

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa said: “We haven’t been doing anything different with him [Bamford], he’s been doing exactly the same things and he has always been doing, the only difference is now he is converting the chances.

“Everything that Bamford gets, he gets because he deserves it. From my point of view, he is a player with a lot of qualities and creates a lot of danger. If he continues to improve his efficiency then he will receive even greater plaudits.

“I am very happy for him, he deserves it. We have made no changes, no significant changes, it is just now that he is being more efficient.”
