Joey Barton responds to facing Government and legal action over his ‘dangerous’ social media posts according to reports.
The UK sports minister condemned what Joey Barton had to say about women’s football commentators, and now promises to intervene with social media platforms.
This comes after Joey Barton called the ITV pundits Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward “the Fred and Rose West of football”, comments that some felt went a step to far with ITV issuing a statement on what he said.
Sports minister Stuart Andrew said earlier this week that he would “look at” what could be done about Barton’s rants about women.
“These are dangerous comments that open the floodgates for abuse and that’s not acceptable,” Andrew said. “But I’m always slightly wary in these situations that these sorts of people want the oxygen and I don’t want to fuel that.
“I want to put on record the amazing contribution that women and girls make to football and sport more generally in this country.
“The opportunities for young people to play football at weekends would not exist if it wasn’t for the fact that we had so many volunteers, many of whom are women. So I condemn it.”
Stuart Andrew said that he will write to Twitter and Meta – which Julie Elliot MP says would be hosting Joey Barton’s new show, Common Sense With Joey Barton, in February.
The sports minister has also claimed that Ofcom could also potentially get involved, saying: “The Online Safety Act puts an obligation on Ofcom to bring about guidance. So we’re waiting for that.”
In response to what Stuart Andrew’s criticism of Barton, Joey replied: “We pay your wages, you little gimp. Not the other way round. @StuartAndrew Don’t ever forget that you cunt. 👍👑”
He added: “”@StuartAndrew fuck you!
“Fuck you and your corrupt government.
“Dangerous?
“A person telling the truth is dangerous.
“The people see you.

According to the Telegraph, one woman has now instructed lawyers over “defamatory” abuse that has been aimed at her from Barton.
Barton was reportedly contacted by a lawyer representing a woman he called a “grifter”, with Barton getting into a row with TV and radio’s Louise Raw, who took issued with comments he made about his brother, Michael, and his part in the racist murder of black teenager Anthony Walker.
Barton hit back at her by saying she is a “pure grifter” following a GoFundMe campaign that she fronted in 2023 to bring legal action against presenter Jeremy Clarkson for remarks against the Dutchess of Sussex.
Lawrence Davies, who is the chief executive of Equal Justice, replied to Barton via Twitter: “Dear Mr Barton We act for Louise Raw. Your tweets about her are certainly defamatory and we will be writing to you formally in that regard later this week. Please provide an address for service, or your lawyers contact details. Please desist from further defamatory comment.
“I can confirm that all monies raised on GFM were transferred to my firm No monies were retained by my client No monies were used by her, other than for the purposes of obtaining legal advice Your allegation of grifting by her is entirely untrue and damages her reputation.”
Barton replied: “You can send it to my personal email address. Look forward to hearing from you.”
Twitter user @Baron_Mongrove tweeted: “Government Action”? Without in any way remarking on the truth or otherwise of @Joey7Barton’s posts what the absolute f**k have they got to do with the government? “Joey Barton facing Government and legal action over ‘dangerous’ social media posts.”
To which Joey replied: “This is brilliant. 🤩”

Andrea Hodgkinson wrote on Twitter: “Get a grip @StuartAndrew Your government is letting 100’s of 1,000’s undocumented, potentially criminal men into our country and you describe an ex footballer as “dangerous” for criticising the current trend of box ticking, unqualified, lacking in knowledge and media training, females commentating on mens football! I agree with @Joey7Barton as do the majority of my female friends who are also avid football fans.
“Bigger picture mate! Sort out the 40,000+ on the terror watch list. Sort out the 500,000 illegal immigrants, deport the foreign criminals, investigate the huge scale money laundering in these cash only businesses owned by Albanians and other Eastern Europeans. This is all based in UK law but our government is doing nothing to ensure UK law is upheld. It’s almost as if you don’t care 🤔”
Again Joey responded: “Thanks Andrea 👍”
Joey retweeted a post from Elon Musk about freedom of speech, with Barton saying: “Could you have a word with our government about the ‘Dangerous’ stuff I’ve been saying please @elonmusk
“The food and table service is not quite the same here in North Korea.
“I’d like to go home. Back to Blighty. 👍👑”

Secretary of state for culture, media and sport Lucy Frazer also condemned “misogynistic bullying behaviour in sport” in reference to Barton following a question from shadow secretary of state Thangam Debbonaire, who said: “Unfortunately there’s been a spate in recent weeks of disgusting, sexist, misogynistic abuse directed towards sportswomen just for being at the top of their game.
“And I know the [sports] minister [Stuart Andrew] has himself been on the receiving end just for standing up to it, which I commend him for”.
Lucy Frazer said: “I would agree with the honourable member that we should not have misogynistic bullying behaviour in sport and all governing bodies should be looking at what their sports are doing.
“We set out in our sport strategy about how we should have fair competition and how we should have integrity within sport”.
This is how fans reacted as Joey Barton responds to facing Government and legal action over his ‘dangerous’ social media posts…
@BuddhistMatt: Don’t always agree on what you say but I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there Joey. Fair play
@juliuscaesario: Like him, loathe him or remain indifferent to him, this is absurd if true
@Ph65PauloDingle: They don’t have any right to do that he’s entitled to his opinion even if people disagree
@Benjfent13: Idc bout his past I’m all here for joey Barton to raise the points and challenge every sell out at every level. Even if I don’t agree with everything that he says/stands for, we need more of this. Shame the good guys remain tight lipped to keep their position in high places
@danmufc11: Hold on no no no this is supposed to be free speech! You can’t go banning or cancelling everything you don’t agree with!
@benno5871: For telling it as it is.
@RichardoWoody: I don’t like female commentary, not because of the content but the high pitch, strained sound of their voices. Still I can’t stand Jonathan Davies for the same reason!
@TomGale91: The government are going to get involved to stop Joey Barton having an opinion on twitter wild times 🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣
@SSE_LTFC: I don’t like Joey Barton but I like the thought of politicians influencing punishments for hurty words even less.
@eairtap1: Nothing to do with the sports minister.
@NigelBak3r: Why are people not allowed an opinion anymore.
@busbybabesnorge: So he is saying that @Joey7Barton dangerous but not wrong? 🤔
@SimonSelvan: Joey is right though
@BhoyDumfries: Telling the truth is always dangerous to politicians, it’s something they have never tried…..
@Chris_CD2010: Barton getting another red card. What a surprise.
@Gill_Murphy: You don’t have to agree with him but what exactly is dangerous about his comments?
@Ph65PauloDingle They don’t have any right to do that he’s entitled to his opinion even if people disagree
@moxington: Woman agree with Joey too
@r88754702: If the government think Joey’s comments are ‘dangerous’ wait till they find out what I and millions of others are saying about them.
@realgmg67: I blocked him years ago.
londonwillalwaysbeblue: If you don’t agree and don’t like what he says that’s fine but silencing someone for their own opinion is insane and I can’t believe some people think it should be tolerated that people should be silenced. If you don’t like it don’t look at it simple
lukeyrud: People have a block button use it. You can’t just silence people for their opinions
leight6n: Freedom of speech? The guy is a pleb but he should be allowed to say what he wants.
paris_leonidas: How can it be legal for ANYBODY to ‘intervene’ with comments made on social media. Social media isn’t even real. We cannot touch it, it’s not a physical being. It’s all in the cloud and does no real harm to anybody. Even if he said something outrageous it’s simply his opinion Absolutely ridiculous.
bap_mufc: There goes free speech once again
I know Joey Barton isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but why on earth is the Sports minister, Stuart Andrew branding his criticism of female pundits as ‘dangerous’?
A noticeable amount of people already agree with his general point & govt intervention isn’t going to change that.
