Jason Cundy controversially questions Newcastle’s place among England’s biggest clubs

talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy controversially questions Newcastle’s place among England’s biggest clubs live on the radio station.

The former Chelsea striker took aim at the Magpies’ history after their takeover was confirmed, but faced immediate questions over his beloved Blues.

As widely publicised, Newcastle now have the richest owners in the Premier League, and world football, after a Saudi-led takeover was completed on Thursday.

The North East club are now backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, with an estimated wealth of more than £300billion, sparking hopes of major investment and great success in the years to come.

Many fans called in to talkSPORT, celebrating the club getting ‘back where they belong’ after 14 years of obscurity under Mike Ashley, however Cundy questions their place among English football’s biggest clubs.

While Newcastle challenged for the Premier League title in the nineties, they haven’t won a major trophy since the fifties and their last top-flight triumph came in the twenties.

“Everyone says Chelsea have no history, let me tell you – Newcastle have zero history,” Cundy told talkSPORT.

“They have nothing. They have a Texaco trophy, InterCities Fairs, they haven’t won the league since the twenties.

He added: “They’re a small club, but a big club in Newcastle.

“In the nineties, before Roman, Chelsea won more than Liverpool.”

However, the former Blues man is wary of the threat Newcastle now pose to his club, which is why he wants to see them relegated this season.

Despite the takeover, Steve Bruce’s men remain 19th in the table, still looking for their first win.

“They are now a threat to the big four – Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and United,” Cundy added.

“It worries me. I would love nothing more than to see them get relegated this season.”

His comments were met with questions from both Newcastle fans and co-host Jamie O’Hara, who were quick to point out Chelsea’s similar story.

The Blues had not won the top-flight since 1955 before Abramovich bought the club in 2003, transforming Chelsea into England’s most successful club in the years that followed.

O’Hara said: “Your football club is Chelsea. You are the El Cashico of the Premier League.”

Meanwhile, Andrew the Newcastle fan said: “We’re not the biggest club in the country, but we now have the richest owners in the world.

“Even if we do get relegated, we’ll come back straight away. We won’t be messing about. They have ten times the money of Man City’s owners.

“You were just Chelsea. Do you think Hernan Crespo was a huge Chelsea fan when he was a kid? The money came along and you got Crespo.

“You wouldn’t have seen two Champions Leagues if Roman Abramovich didn’t come along.”

As mentioned, Jason Cundy controversially questions Newcastle’s place among England’s biggest clubs, here’s how Twitter reacted…

@Jaaaaaaamezzzz: How much spice is Cundy on, thinks Chelsea are bigger then NUFC and LFC 😂

@Maplo16: No club has zero history whether it’s Newcastle, Hartlepool, Newport, Chesterfield etc. Each club is important to someone. Until Ken Bates started rolling the dice and you won the cup on 97 Wednesday were far ahead of you in terms of ‘history’ so don’t give it the big guns now

@casscj70: Yet in the 9 years between 94 and 03, Chelsea won more trophies or appeared in more finals than West Ham, Spurs, Everton and Newcastle (and Sheff Weds) have managed in the last 40 years combined. You’re still bitter over the League Cup in 85

@Bogdybv1: Chelsea won european trophies even before Roman!

@iannufc01: Newcastle had more leagues than Chelsea before Roman more fa cups more seasons in the top flight and more seasons in Europe and we also didnt get bought for a quid in the 80s

@kickabell: Newcastle are not a BIG club, we’ve a large fanbase but our history is nothing more then pathetic. We lived the dream in the 90’s and then again under Sir Bobby 01/03 season’s breaking champions league records and beating the likes of Juventus and yet still no trophies.

@RyanMines: In fairness he has a point… We don’t have much if any history… So I guess we shouldnt try and build any then…. What a helmet.

@Brotherponch: What’s interesting about this debate is that no #NUFC fan really cares if others think we’re big or not. Our community has a football club back, and that’s why we’re all so excited.

@deanthebard: Give it a rest Jason. I’ve a lot of mates who are Newcastle fans. Have to say some of the most passionate around. Better than half the tourists we pack the Bridge with these days.

@fez_1892: Still the 9th most successful team in England Jason 😎 and we’ve not won a domestic trophy since 1955 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻

@mickycantwell: He’s terrified the poor bloke. The sweetest thing about this whole takeover, will be sticking it to those entitled prats that think it should be a closed shop, where the so called ‘big teams’ to dominate without challenge.

@RichardBenbow79: All the top teams have done it, so why not Newcastle? Good luck to the geordies, hope they mix it up.

@robiez1: Zero history? 9th most successful English team yet haven’t managed anything at all since 1969. Last FA Cup was 55 and league title in the 20s. What dictates a “big” club? Just success? For me many big clubs haven’t won a thing for year! AVFC SAFC NFFC LUFC etc etc.

@jackm1892: Cundy’s argument they won a European trophy before Liverpool as being a big club. Who won one before both ? Errr NUFC. Who won 6 Fa Cups before both ? Errrrr NUFC. Who won 4!league titles to Chelsea’s 1 before the Russian ? Errrrrr NUFC.GET IT UP YA. @jasoncundy05

@chriscaife: No doubt Chelsea’s future was changed by Roman but we were a decent club in the 90s. I watched us play when I was a kid!! We did win trophies and finished in the top 6 before Romans money! Newcastle are relegation fodder and have been for years. It’s going to take time for them.

@ShevasNUFC: Of course Jason Cundy has to speak when no-one asked. The bloke’s footballing opinions are as insightful and useful as a lightbulb coated in black paint.

@TestimonialPhil: If United and Liverpool didn’t win a trophy for the next 20 years. They would still be a bigger club than Chelsea. Newcastle will be a serious player in 3/4 years time. They have all the makings of being a MUCH bigger club than City,Chelsea etc.

@_Don_Corleone_: In the 8 straight years before Roman took over, Cfc were still top 6 every single year consistently. And of course also won some silverware as well which is more than can be said about some of the legacy teams in the 90s. The notion that cfc just didn’t exist before 2003 is dumb

@CFC_Mason20: He’s right. I don’t get all this Newcastle, Leeds etc being massive clubs bigger than city because they have history. What history?

@RichardWye: At last someone has said it!!!

@CFCAzpilicueta: Cundy talking facts here, obviously chelsea weren’t as big as we were now but we were still a top for team whod been winning regular trophies for 15 years by the time Roman took over. Newcastle are 19th in the league and have won fuck all in the last 90 years #NUFCTakeover

@_robowen: 47 seconds of why talksport is a proper load of shit

@Jw_Av04: Salty cause they aren’t one of The richest clubs in the prem anymore

@nopopenohope: Feel like anytime something positive happens that wank cundy shows up and fucks it

@adilangley: Why don’t you ask professionals that were at the top of the game and are still involved like @GNev2, @Carra23 etc about how big #nufc actually are. Players know just how big we are as a club, not based on what we’ve won but on how big we are based on support and everything else

@c7harlie: Fans of English teams arguing about who has more history and who just buys success is fucking tragic… your whole league has ruined football with money

@DaveBenjamin15: Overnight Newcastle have become the most hated club in the Premier league.
