Jamie Carragher and Luke Shaw hits back at fans condemning Gareth Southgate and Harry Maguire

Jamie Carragher and Luke Shaw hits back at fans condemning Gareth Southgate and Harry Maguire following Monday’s 3-3 draw against Germany.

Carra leapt to the defence of the England manager who has been hugely criticised with the Three Lions winless in six games, their longest run since 1993.

Southgate’s side surprised many when coming back from 2-0 down to share the spoils, but there was plenty of discontent among supporters whether that was at Wembley or from those on social media.

Harry Maguire made a number of errors that led to goals, while Nick Pope’s mistake late on allowed Germany to equalise.

This was the last match before the winter World Cup and there are plenty of concerns over how England will do in Qatar with Southgate knowing he could be axed if they fail to impress.

Carragher defended Southgate on Twitter after the Germany game.

He wrote on Twitter: “You would think @England had won numerous tournaments considering the stick Southgate is getting!

“It had been s***e for years before he got the job. Big Sam had the job before him!!”

When questioned by a supporter that he was scared to overhype a ‘proper golden generation’, he replied back: “One or two players at the most from this current team would get into the 2002/06 team and the same with 1996/98.”

Carragher pointed out that Sam Allardyce was Southgate’s predecessor
Carragher also believes that only ‘one or two’ would make it into previous England sides

Southgate goes into his third major tournament as England boss, with his record so far nothing short of brilliant.

He led his side to the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup before reaction the final of Euro 2020.

“I’ve said all along, judge us on major tournaments. We’ve had two good ones where the fans have been incredible and pushed us the whole way,” Southgate told talkSPORT.

“And we’re going to need the same in Qatar, whether that’s the fans travelling or the fans back home giving us motivation.

“You saw tonight they were incredible, giving us motivation. After going 2-0 down there weren’t any boos or jeers, just pure determination.

“Not just the players but everyone inside the stadium can go away proud as well.

“It shows the character in the team. We had a similar situation in the summer and kind of went the other way against Hungary.

“We spoke about not letting that happen again. The lads we have here, we’ve all got great mentalities, we’ve all got great pride wearing the England shirt and I thought you saw that come out in the last half hour.”

England defender Luke Shaw has also backed teammate Harry Maguire to come through this tough period of his career after he continued his fall from grace with a poor second half against Germany.

Having only started three games for Man Utd this season, eyebrows were raised when Southgate started the out-of-favour defender in both of England’s Nations League clashes over the most recent international break.

Maguire was clearly lacking confidence, giving away a penalty after being caught on the ball by Jamal Musiala to hand Germany the lead.

He was then caught out of position high up the pitch as the Germans doubled their lead on a night to forget for the defender.

However, Shaw has been quick to defend him after helping to inspire a comeback to a 3-3 draw at Wembley, warning that Maguire isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and that England fans will have to accept it.

“Of course Harry is an amazing player, an amazing character”, he began. “He has taken a lot of stick, probably more than I have ever seen before in football but he never hides away, he is always there”.

“You can have people that can hide away and not want to be in the spotlight but he keeps putting himself in the spotlight and it shows the strength and character he has got because, come on, everyone knows that he is an unbelievable player.

“At the moment the confidence might not be there because it might feel like the whole world is against him, it is tough for him but us as players, staff we are all behind him because he is a very important player and it shows Gareth’s trust that he has played in both games.

“Look at the Euros and what he has done, people need to understand he is a big part of the England team and they have to accept it.”

This is what fans said as Jamie Carragher and Luke Shaw hits back at fans condemning Gareth Southgate and Harry Maguire…

@Joey_CFC: Just because others did a bad job before him doesn’t mean he should just get a pass, what kind of logic is that?

@Im_RobM: Big Sam had a 100% win ratio. Miles ahead of Southgate’s record.

@CableGuyGav: I just don’t rate him. He didn’t get the job on merit & has gone back on his word about picking players based on form, not reputation. He does deserve to lead Eng into WC, but we’ve also had the dream draw in 2 consecutive tournaments. One of which we should have won.

@HorlockSteven: What a nonsense comment. People arent happy with the dross football being served up, especially when we have decent attacking options. His in-game management is poor and he picks players grossly out of form

@DavidMaynard32: Jamie, we reached a WC Semi and Euro Final. To now end the NL with 0 wins out of 6, is not good enough and that form is serious questionable going into the WC in 2 months time. After the previous 2 tournaments, we should be kicked on. We haven’t, we’ve stalled and playing poorly!

@Noelbrennan15: Most of the match was just too pragmatic and boring. It just seems like the players are playing with shackles when if they play with more freedom and intensity just like the 10 mins tonight it’s a joy to watch. Counter attacking football when at home, come on!!

@michaelttfw: The World Cup in 2018 and Euro 2020 were quite comfortably the easiest routes any nation could ask for to get to a final. There’s a genuine argument to say that Southgate bottled what may prove to be England’s best chance of winning a trophy in many of our lifetimes.

@barneyGoxfordd: Using this logic every manager that’s ever done well in their job shouldn’t face criticism when they start doing shit? Worst england form in 29 years leading up to a world cup he needs to sort it out or go

@Matty_OCarroll: Allardyce would have won that World Cup and the Euros with the draw Southgate got

@bigspeckydweeb: am I alone in thinking Big Sam’s England would have been probably the best England side in about 30 years? Sam gets lumped in with all them other bozos, but he used to be quite a forward thinking, analytic manager. would’ve done half alright with decent players imo.
