Ivan Toney reveals why he did controversial Birmingham hand gesture vs Aston Villa

Ivan Toney reveals why he did controversial Birmingham hand gesture whilst celebrating scoring vs Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Brentford striker has explained the reason behind doing what he did after opening the scoring for the Bees in on the 7th minute.

Emiliano Buendia levelled the scoreline for Villa soon afterwards with his first goal for the West Midlands club and the Premier League match ended at 1-1.

When Toney struck to open his Premier League account, he celebrated by forming his hands into a “Z” shape, leaving many questioning it.

For those who don’t know, the hand sign is well known to Birmingham City supporters as a reference to the club’s notorious Zulu Warriors hooligan firm.

After the game, Toney confirmed in an interview with Brentford club media: “It was for the Birmingham fans. My agent is a Birmingham fan and I don’t think Birmingham and Aston Villa get on too well.

“So the celebration, I just thought I’d get a little bit of a reaction from the fans.”

When speaking more his first goal in the top flight, he said: “It’s a big moment for me and my family. I’m delighted to get off the mark, not just for myself but for the team.

“Hopefully there’s much more to come.”

Reflecting on his side’s performance, Brentford boss Thomas Frank told BBC Match of the Day: “[I’m] happy with most of the performance. We started the game brilliant at a difficult place to play.

“We were brave, pressed high and scored and I felt we were really on top of the game. Then one miscommunication and it gave them the chance.

“In the second half I felt we started better and then it was more even in the last part of the game. I felt if there should have been a narrow winner it should have been us.

“I would like us to be even braver. My message before every game is to go for a win, play forward and attack. I just probably need to keep reinforcing it.”

What the managers said…

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith: “I’m not sure we did quite enough. I thought we were the aggressors, certainly in the second half and latter stages, but probably didn’t create enough clear-cut chances in the final third to win it.

“Satisfied with the endeavour, the work rate and coming back from the game.

“It’s been a tough week for us, but we’ve come through it with a point. We wanted three but didn’t quite do enough in the final third to do that.”

Brentford boss Thomas Frank: “You need to remember where we’re coming from, what kind of club we are, we are just a bus stop in Hounslow, so it’s quite impressive.

“I’m pleased with many bits of the performance, and again like at Crystal Palace, if there was to be a narrow winner, it should have been us.

“But again we lack a bit of final third quality and composure. But top character, top mentality, and I like the way we presented ourselves, we weren’t really under pressure and went for the win.”

On Toney: “I am 100 per cent sure he’ll score more goals, and it’s a fantastic journey he’s been on, remarkable.”
