VIDEO: Gillingham assistant manager gets chinned with three players also sent off

A video is getting plenty of attention, appearing to show a Gillingham assistant manager getting chinned with three players also sent off.

The Gills ended up scuppering their one goal lead at the New Meadow as Steve Cotterill’s side produced a comeback to take the points on Saturday – a League One match that was marred with confrontation played out at the end of the game.

It was Jack Tucker who broke the deadlock, putting the travelling side Gillingham in front after 12 minutes on the clock.

That however was cancelled out following a spectacular effort from Salop’s Tom Bloxham which made it one apiece on the 58th minute.

The home side went ahead through Sam Cosgrove ten minutes later before the match ended in chaos when Dan Phillips was sent off for Gillingham along with David Davis for Shrewsbury, both for second cautions, while Gills assistant Paul Raynor was also red-carded as a scuffle took place in the technical area.

Ugly scenes played out with both sets of management and players coming to blows, which saw assistant Raynor being sent off after the final whistle. P

hillips and Davis had also been booked – both picking up their second cautions – following the scuffle.

Home sub keeper Harry Burgoyne was sent off amid the chaos.

Steve Cotterill reflects on Shrewsbury Town’s 2-1 comeback victory over visitors Gillingham.

Cotterill on the result: “It feels really good to get the win, the lads showed great character. Coming back from a goal down against a team like Gillingham is incredibly difficult. I thought the lads were resolute, determined and in the end, it was a game we deserved to win.

“We wanted a little bit more zip in our play but we didn’t change anything tactically at half-time. I felt our play was a little bit slow but I have to say the pitch was a little bit dry today. With the way we want to play, we want the ball to be moving quickly. We needed less dwell time on the ball and needed to move the ball quickly.

“We didn’t really give Gillingham a look-in at the end. Their formation changed but our four lads were excellent against their lads. I am delighted for the players, and I am delighted for the supporters today. Everyone is now going home with that warm feeling in their belly.

Cotterill on the goals: “I am really, really pleased for young Tom. He’s a great young man and now he’ll be brought to everyone’s attention. I want to bring young players through for the Chairman. We brought Nathanael to the club, Tom and Charlie have come through the system – I want to see more of these lads coming through.

“Sam’s goal was a great finish and I thought he could have had another one with the chance he had in the firs-half. Unselfish as he is, he tried to set up Dan Udoh. He more than made up for that in the second-half.”

Steve Evans post-match: “That’s hard to take. I thought for the first 30 minutes we were in total command of the game.

“We got a bit sloppy before half time; we spoke about having to be careful. They are always going to put you under pressure.

“The first and second half was chalk and cheese. “The first half was very good. We missed some chances, they put in a couple of blocks. “At 2-1 it’s a scrap to see if we can get something.”

Fans reacted as a video of the Gillingham assistant manager getting chinned with three players also sent off at Shrewsbury gets everyone talking…

@RHShrew: Steve Evans involved in something controversial… really? 😱🥊

@93_price: Typical Evans stirring it then stepping back.

@AndySTFC79: Good to see the salopian sorting it out. We’ll done @BurgoyneH1

@georgeawillis: Looks like SC has gone over to politely ask the Gillingham coach driver a question and then it’s gone a bit handbags.

@ShrewsfansUSA: In fairness to Harry looks like he is trying to split things up.

@crownerjohn: Looks like Cotterill has gone over, it gets nasty and Burgoyne rushes over to protect the gaffer

@edjcrane1986: Something back handed must’ve been said by one of the Gills staff for SC to march over. In the mess, the Gills assistant coach (black top) lands a half arsed effort on one of our staff. That’s deserving of a red. All too messy and typical of Chunk Evans’ teams.

@kevtaylor8650: What started this not sure what raynor did wrong

@Neil_7: Swung his fist to break free of their goalkeeper who was holding him down on the ground. I think it was Raynor pointing out that one of their players should be sent off for a second yellow that started it all.

@Luke10men: I love the fact that even the gills bench hate evans and raynor that much that don’t bother helping out, just get front row seats 😂😂😂

@ollief3rn: Surprised Steve Evans didn’t join in

@BenH93_: About time someone chinned that cunt. Nasty piece of work. Taken years for him to get what he deserves! Give that Shrewsbury keeper an immediate pay rise

@BlueBrazil1975: Have seen footage of their keeper coming in to our technical area and basically shoving Raynor to the floor and sitting on him WWF style. Would love to hear the refs explanation for sending off Raynor.
