Huddersfield and Bradford clash; clubs condemn alleged racist abuse towards player

Huddersfield and Bradford clash, and both clubs condemn alleged racist abuse from a home fan towards player Curtis Tilt.

The Bantams were unable to take advantage of Huddersfield who went down to 10-men with 30 minutes of normal time remaining. Marcus McGuane was sent off for a reckless tackle on Jenson Metcalfe.

Liam Manning got off to a winning start to his reign at the Terriers, with Marcus Harness scored the only goal of the game 23 minutes in.

The result means Bradford suffer a third loss in four league games, while Huddersfield end their winless run and guarantee their stay within the top six.

It was just as feisty outside of the ground as it was inside, away from players clashing, fans of both sides also got into some trouble.

Bottles and various objects were thrown, a strong police presence on hand to try and restore calm, holding back those trying to push through to get to their rivals.

After the game, things got heated, from alleged racism towards a player to it then ‘going off’ at the back of the South Stand housing both Huddersfield and Bradford fans.

Have a watch of the many videos that has surfaced on social media from before, during and after the match…

BRADFORD STATEMENT:

Bradford City AFC is aware of an allegation of racist abuse from a supporter in the home end, towards Curtis Tilt, following the conclusion of this afternoon’s Sky Bet League One encounter with Huddersfield Town.

West Yorkshire Police are dealing with the matter, and the club will cooperate fully with all investigations and support Curtis, who has allegedly been subjected to such abhorrent discrimination throughout the process.

Bradford City AFC condemns all racist abuse in the strongest possible manner. We have a zero-tolerance policy to such unacceptable behaviour.

The club will be making no further comment at this time.

POLICE STATEMENT:

Shortly after the final whistle at today’s Huddersfield Town v Bradford City match at the Accu stadium, the referee reported that a Bradford City Player had been the subject of racist gestures as he left the pitch by a Huddersfield Town supporter.

We are investigating a racially aggravated public order offence, and enquiries are ongoing with both clubs to identify the person involved.

HUDDERSFIELD STATEMENT:

We are aware of an allegation of racism from the crowd that was made at full-time of today’s Sky Bet League One home fixture with Bradford City at the Accu Stadium.

Assisting the relevant authorities and officials in their investigations, we reiterate in the strongest possible terms that Huddersfield Town does not tolerate discrimination or anti-social behaviour of any kind.

Bradford boss Graham Alexander said, per the club website: “It was a tough game.

“In the first half an hour, with the level they were setting, it did not allow us to play our game properly.

“There were things we could control better, and certainly, the goal was a poor one to concede from our end.

“In the second half and with the extra man, we got more of a foothold after the tactical tweaks we made, but in the final actions before getting to their goal, we did not have the finishing touch.

“It is not a game we can look back on and claim we should have gotten more from.

“No one needs to tell us how tough this division is. I am so proud and impressed with the progress we have made in such a short amount of time since our promotion, considering how tough I know this league is.”

Huddersfield’s Liam Manning said, per the club website:

“I’m delighted for everybody associated with the Club. It’s not easy when change happens, and I think it’s been a bit of a whirlwind week, obviously coming up and having limited time with the group. How they have responded with what we asked them to do, and with the energy and atmosphere of the place, it’s a special day to be fair.

“A few people asked me if it would be a game that I would want to open with? Too right. I’ve been quite clear on that, and you can see why. I think you know the fans staying behind, and the energy through the game, it was a fantastic day.

“It was a special moment. You see the lads today, and I think they left everything out there. Fans get that, and I said it in my press yesterday around the importance of behaviours and earning the right to get the fans behind us. There will be moments where we will have a tough time, and we will need the fans to pull us through, and that’s what we are trying to do here.

“We all have the same goal, and we all want to achieve the same things. If we can create more moments, and the atmosphere like we did today, this Club can be a force.”

Twitter users reacted as the fans and players of Huddersfield and Bradford clash, and both clubs also condemn alleged racist abuse towards player…

@theterriersfan: Regardless of rivalry. Please Bradford fans don’t start calling Huddersfield Town FANS racist. This is one mug who should and will be banned. It happens in every fanbase. Not condoning it but when you start calling us as fans racist your so wrong

@LRT71Htafc: If that was the case I hope they ban them . Not proper fans abusing others, it’s a disgrace. Im a Huddersfield fan and don’t do things like that. Sorry for a great club Bradford for abuse. Ps well observed applause with our town fans in remembering a true football icon TY rip.

@ufarte_lopez: 4 Bradford fans escorted out of the Kilner Bank Stand for their own safety by stewards before they got battered by some very angry Huddersfield lads lol

@drams519: You’re actually a mug if you go to the footie for a fight. Fully grown men aswell

@jfarndale04: Sending us packing? Throwing vapes and bottles behind an invisible barrier while we had nowhere to go then once one of ours kicked off a copper pepper sprayed a lass, proper hard that

@paulsimonwalker: Grow up lads, it’s only football

@Hannah6891: This is pathetic from both sides and whoever was in that. Grow up.

@GarthwaiteJez: Some young children in there, grow up

@HHWHITE1980: Tasty scenes 🤣🤣🤣 load of kids hiding behind the stewards 🤣🤣

@LondonBantam: ‘Tasty scenes’ he says, as the hide behind stewards and coppers, chucking vapes and waving their arms about at City fans. Tramps
