‘How can you get that wrong?!’ – Criticism over corner decision leading to Villa goal vs West Ham

‘How can you get that wrong?!’ – There has been criticism over the corner decision leading to an Aston Villa goal vs West Ham.

It was defeat in Graham Potter first game as West Ham boss as Aston Villa came from behind to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

Two goals in five second-half minutes from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers saw the hosts’ complete a comeback, although the Hammers had been furious when referee Tim Robinson incorrectly awarded a corner in the build-up to Onana’s leveller.

Lucas Paqueta’s 9th-minute opener put the visitors deservedly ahead, however, Potter’s new side watched Amadou Onana equalised before Morgan Rogers bagged the winner to leave Potter holding his head in frustration.

West Ham were furious, claiming the corner in the lead-up to the first goal should not have been awarded because Boubacar Kamara’s shot was not deflected.

Villa nearly went 3-1 up towards the end. Jacob Ramsey struck the ball from the edge of the box and saw his shot rattle back off the post.

Dion Dublin admitted on BBC Radio 5 Live that he would have been “outraged” if he was playing for West Ham.

“The referee and assistant messing up with that corner – it is not a corner. No one is near it,” Ian Wright said on ITV.

“How can you get that wrong?”

BBC Sport wrote in their live blog: “West Ham are furious with the referee. They think Villa’s corner should never have been awarded.

“Lucas Paqueta also went down as the cross came in but no foul was given.

“Just seen the replay and West Ham are right to feel aggrieved. Boubacar Kamara’s shot was not deflected and instead went straight out of play. It should have been a goal kick.

“There was little in Lucas Paqueta’s clash with Ezri Konsa though.”

Nick Mashiter (BBC Sport football news reporter): “Villa had dominated since half-time but have earned a slice of good fortune as it should not have been a corner in the build-up to the leveller.”

West Ham boss Graham Potter, speaking to BBC: “We’re disappointed to go out and to lose, but the application of the players has been really good. They’ve carried out everything we’ve asked them to do in a short space of time.

“It’s disappointing to lose the players we did from an attacking perspective, that probably changed our threat. We had some more chances at the end but in the end Aston villa were too strong.

“We just try to get the team into a good shape. The talent is there but it’s just about trying to get the team together as a collective. That’s what we’re trying to do.

“After 2-1 we still had some chances at the end. We pushed and pushed, but it was not meant to be.

“Niclas [Fullkrug’s injury] looked a bad one so that’s going to be more time. Crysencio Summerville’s is a bit more precautionary. We’re hoping it’s less severe.”

Should Villa have been awarded a corner before their equaliser?: “It didn’t look it live, we’re surprised it was a corner. But the referee has given it. There’s nothing we can do now.

“The players have had a big week, a difficult week. We need to recover and refresh and have a big game on Tuesday night.”

Graham Potter, speaking to ITV: “The start of the game was really good.

“I thought we had good organisation and offered a threat and reduced Aston Villa to not too much.

“The second half Aston Villa stepped-up and pushed us back a bit too much.

“Losing Niclas Fullkrug and Crysencio Summerville affected our attacking part of the game.”

On Aston Villa’s equaliser: “I don’t think the first goal was a corner, it didn’t look it.

“2-1 down, we regrouped and pushed at the end.”

On the performance: “Overall, disappointed to go out, but lots of positives in the game.

“We had to adjust without Crysencio and that affected our attacking play – Villa pushed us back.

“We ended up too deep and with the ball we couldn’t sustain enough attacks, but that’s something we will have to improve.

“The players for the last two days have been good. We have to hang on to the positives.

“We dropped too deep and the injuries to the attacking players were a blow for us.”

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to ITV1: “Happy, but we were trying to set an objective of not conceding an easy goal, but we did it early again.

“But we responded well. We didn’t concede chances again more or less. The players showed our wishes to do something in the competition.

“We are conceding a lot of goals, but our most important objective is to win.

“We try to be strong here, to have a fortress. We have done what we have done all season. We responded well and controlled the game more or less.

“Of course it is very important which team we will face after today. But now we focus, because we are in three competitions and we want to get something in the Champions League, in the Premier League and now in the FA Cup.”

Unai Emery to BBC Sport: “I am very happy because we did a very good match. We’re getting stronger and more imposing.

“We conceded one goal. One of our work to do is to try to concede less goals. But like the season is going, as we progress we get better. We finished strong.

“To win is very important for the confidence. We gave players minutes as well. We are happy because this competition as well, historically, very important.

“In 90 minutes we were trying to be clinical. We didn’t do this in the first half, but in the second half we were better. We were dominating more and pushing more. We were more clinical. we respected this competition and respected the opponent.

“We did our work like we planned.”

Aston Villa goalscorer Morgan Rogers to ITV One: “A bit of belief, we were a bit more patient. There was more forward thinking.

“We created chances, a bit more mayhem in the final third, and that’s where our goals came from.

“We know we can come back against anyone. We’ll look to rectify the start of games, but we’re happy with the way we’ve finished them.

“Why can’t we win it? Anything can happen in a cup competition. You don’t know who you’ll draw, where you’ll play.”

‘How can you get that wrong?!’ – Criticism continues over the corner decision leading to Villa goal vs West Ham …

@Jeff18781: Who the fuck was that meant to have touched? There wasn’t even a change of direction. Honestly the standard of refereeing has plummeted in this country, they’re to a man fucking useless

@StevenDay41176: What’s the fucking linesman looking at?!! 😡

@tuckerpoole: 😂😂😂 it’s not even close to a corner & of course changed game massively

@GlenWorrell: Joke of a corner. thanks ref

@westhamtransfer: Aston Villa score from a corner that wasn’t a corner.

@huttonsleftfoot: Funny how the game pans out. Villa should have had a corner off the Tielemans shot when they didn’t (clearly comes off West Ham defender foot) ref gives GK. Few mins later Villa get a corner shouldn’t of had

@WestHamPlace: Literally not a corner. Awful refereeing AGAIN. Give them VAR or take the VAR away. It don’t matter, they are just pure shit these referees

@A_A_L_1986: Turnaround gifted by the officials! West Ham ROBBED

@WHUFC_News: HOW HAS HE GIVEN A CORNER THERE

@WestHamMatters: That’s an absolute joke! Nowhere near a corner! Soon as it given said to my boy… they’ll score here now! And of course… Onama! Total joke 🎪

@CoreyBrace: Awful refereeing. Decision for that corner has totally changed the momentum against West ham

@IronsRavensMac: Where the fuck did the @FA and @premierleague find thus ref ffs absolutely shit or corrupt, give villa a fake corner.

@mancityneil:
The decision to give Aston Villa a corner defies belief.
The fact that linesman don’t even make decisions anymore doesn’t help.
It’s cost West Ham the game.
Sick to death of watching officials ruining games.

@stevenhead38: They need to get the officials in front of the camera on tv and asked them how they can mess up so badly to ask why they gave a corner for villa that no west ham player touched they need to come out and explain how they managed to fuck that up so badly especially the ref

@DapoCeo: West Ham must be fuming. Was nowhere nowhere near a corner. Don’t know what the officials saw there.
