Henri Lansbury explains bizarre grass cutting celebration after wonder goal for Luton at Hull

Henri Lansbury explains that bizarre grass cutting celebration of his after scoring a 30 yard wonder goal for Luton at Hull on Friday.

The former Arsenal youngster credited a grass fertiliser company for his first goal in a Hatters shirt, described as an absolute beauty, as he ended an 81-game scoreless run.

He is seen miming mowing the lawn in a celebration that left his teammates in hysterics during a 2-0 Championship win at the MKM Stadium.

Despite his position, the 31-year-old hadn’t got on the scoresheet since signing for the Hatters in 2021, but you wouldnโ€™t have been able to tell with his first goal for the club from distance against Hull.

At the end of the first half, the ball fell to Lansbury outside of the box, before running onto it and smacked it into the bottom corner.

He then went and got the ball, before starting an imaginary lawnmower and cutting the grass.

In his post-match interview Lansbury was asked about the celebration, and if gardening is a big thing for him.

โ€œYeah massive,โ€ he replied. โ€œIt keeps me away from the training ground with the lads.

โ€œBut shout out to the boys at Grass Gains, theyโ€™re crucial to this. The big man [Carlton Morris] did a celebration for us last time and makes his grass nice and green.โ€

Morris added: โ€œLittle tech[nical] volley shows what heโ€™s capable of but he scores a lot better goals than that in training.

The interviewer then continued: โ€œWe understand the groundsman has given him his own bit of grass at the training ground, how good is he at looking after it?

โ€œHonestly itโ€™s like a bowls pitch,โ€ Morris replied. โ€œHe knows his way around the garden thatโ€™s for sure.โ€

The interviewer then got out his phone and said: โ€œHenry can I just have a word with you about my lawn at home?

โ€œAs you can see weโ€™ve got a lot of green and thereโ€™s these little brown patches that are worrying me, what would you do?

โ€œRe-seed it,โ€ Lansbury replied.

โ€œLovely, gonna do that,โ€ the Sky reporter said.

An own goal from Alfie Jones and a stunner from Henri Lansbury saw Nathan Jones’ Hatters to victory – hours after Hull sacked manager Shota Arveladze.

Hull caretaker Andy Dawson: “Little things are going against us, but I’m a big believer in the harder you work, the luckier you get. Before the game, we said we wanted a real work ethic in the group and that’s one thing we saw today. We gave a really disappointing goal away in the first six minutes from a set-play. That’s something we can do something about; we can get first contact, we can get second contact.

“After that, I thought they were brave and tried to get on it. Yes, we lacked a little bit of cutting edge, I thought, but they kept going. When confidence is low at times – and it is when you don’t win football games – you want people to stand up and receive the ball and that’s what they did. We’ll get games throughout the course of the season when things go our way as well.

“This is a football club that I have been part of for many, many years and I’ve said to the boys, when they pull the shirt on, when they wear this badge, they have to give everything for the club and for the fans. And they’ll appreciate that.”

Hull City interim head coach Andy Dawson told BBC Radio Humberside:

“I found out this morning. I spoke to Shota and he was honest and open. We send him and Peter van der Veen our regards, they’re two fantastic people.

“We prepared through the international break. Us and the lads worked hard, they looked fit and strong and prepared to go into the game tonight and then that came about this morning. But that’s football. Nothing really surprises you and you have to adapt quickly.

“The team was a bit of everything. It was conversations over the past few days and this morning. The lads thought a lot of the gaffer and Peter so it was about preparing them to get them in the right state of mind.

“I thought we were a bit loose on the first goal. After that, to a man, they were brave out of possession and on getting the ball. They kept going to the end. In the final third we could have had some more inventiveness but that’s something we can work on.”

Luton’s Nathan Jones: “This was a trickier game than we probably made it look. A change of manager can go one of two ways; it can rally them and they can have a real uplift, but we didn’t give them a chance.

“First 15 minutes, they had a little bit of play, but we had all the chances and scored early. Then I thought we got to grips with it, smothered them, had all the best chances and were two up at half-time, though it should have been more.

“In the second half, I thought our game management was outstanding. We probably should have had a penalty, but we’re not going to bleat about that now because I thought the referee was good tonight anyway. Really pleasing; an away win against a tricky opponent.”

Luton Town boss Nathan Jones told BBC Three Counties Radio:

“It was an excellent performance. It was a trickier game than it looked as they changed manager, which can have an uplift, but we had to concentrate on ourselves, which I thought we did fantastically.

“Once we got to grips with the press, we smothered them, and we should have been more than 2-0 up at half-time.

“The onus isn’t on us at 2-0. We always believe we’ve got goals in us. Once we put the level of performance in in the first half, in the second half it was about trying to go out in the final third but if you can’t you need to defend well, which I thought we did.”
