Heidi Elliott speaks on saving an Aston Villa fan’s life with an update since given on man’s condition as he recovers in hospital.
She is a dedicated Aston Villa fan and trainee paramedic, but showed quick thinking during Thursday night’s match, saving the life of a fan who had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Heidi went down rows of seats in the Holte End to deliver CPR until paramedics arrived, prompting Heidi to call for the L2 block in the lower Holte to be evacuated.
Now thew Dad of the Aston Villa supporter who received emergency medical attention at Villa’s Europa Conference League semi-final first leg against Olympiacos has posted on social media to thank supporters and emergency staff for saving his son’s life.
Jason Moseley said: “Thank you for your thoughts , it was my son that collapsed .
“He is in hospital but sitting up and well waiting tests . Thank you to the amazing staff and supporters and emergency services who saved his life “
He also said on Facebook: “Just before half time in the Villa game last night, my son suffered a cardiac arrest. He is 24 years old. Yes he’s the medical emergency that you saw on tv. The actions of a young lady in the crowd, the Villa stewards and the emergency services are why I am here at 3:30 in the morning having just left my son in hospital sitting up and moaning at the result! My children and my family are my life, nothing else matters, football and Villa are our passion, but nothing without them by my side .”
Lauren Mai also posted: “My Josh was the 24 year old who suffered the cardiac arrest last night. In my nearly 21 years of life I have never been as scared as I was last night. Thankfully a miracle happened last night, and she is called Heidi Elliott and everyone else who were involved from the emergency services. Josh is doing amazing, there’s just no words at all. He is my best friend, and he is 10000% strong stuff. We love you Josh ❤️”

The power of social media managed to find Heidi, who this morning spoke to BBC WM Radio, she said, per Birmingham Mail: “I’m okay, a bit overwhelmed but all good. I’m a season ticket holder with my dad. We did the usual, went for dinner and then made our way to the ground and watched the first half. Villa scored late on in the first half.
“It seemed like any other game up until half-time really. About four or five rows in front of us there was a commotion, with a large group of people waving trying to get the attention of stewards. That caught my eye and when I looked over I saw the young lad on the floor, bless him.
“He didn’t look well and I could tell that something was wrong. I looked where the paramedics where but we didn’t have their attention yet. That’s why I thought I can’t just stand there at that point and I had to go down and help.
“I’m doing my paramedic degree, so I said I could help and let me get near him. There was a lot of people trying to offer their assistance as well. It worried me that there was a lack of recognition that he was in cardiac arrest.
“It’s about looking at the patient, are they responding to you, checking if they are breathing, checking for a pulse. If both are absent then they are in cardiac arrest and it’s imperative that CPR is started as soon as possible. I work for East Midlands ambulance service, they do courses through the British Heart foundation, so I’d encourage anyone to do that.
“When I got to him he was already in cardiac arrest. Immediately I started CPR. There were a few fans around encouraging me to get him in the recovery position, but I recognised that it wasn’t necessary at the time. It was more important that we got the CPR started. I knew the paramedics would be on scene to start a defibrillator. To start with that CPR is really important. The defibrillator came and administered shocks to the patient and then the paramedics took over.
“When the professionals get there as such, continuous chest compressions was really important. Also in the area we were in the rescue press would have been difficult to deliver. It was more important just to do the CPR, it is the most important part of it.
“I think the main thing that I’d push from this whole experience is to encourage everyone to look at the British Heart Foundation. If people haven’t had the training, it’s a life-saving skill and you never know when you’ll need to use it.”
Shortly after Heidi performed CPR and the patient was shocked, an ambulance backed up between the Holte End and the Doug Ellis Stand to take him to hospital. His father posted on social media: “He is in hospital but sitting up and well waiting tests. Thank you to the amazing staff and supporters and emergency services who saved his life.”
As medics walked down the stairs with the patient, both Villa and Olympiacos fans from all sides of the stadium clapped. The public announcer then said: “We’d like to thank the medical staff for their prompt assistance this evening.”
With the start of the second half delayed, TNT Sports presenter Jules Breach said: “Just to let you know, the reason that the second half hasn’t got underway yet is because there has been a medical emergency in the stands, and there was a sign that went up just behind us that said to clear the Lower Holte L2 area.
“It has now been cleared of all the fans, but there has been a cardiac arrest, and we’re hearing that there is going to be a short delay to the second half.”
TNT Sports reporter Becky Ives then joined the broadcast from pitchside, and said: “Unfortunately right on the stroke of half-time the medical emergency happened. I was down the tunnel and the emergency services moved very quickly.
“They moved quickly to remove fans from the lower tier of the Holte End on the left hand side. There have been quite a few discussions going on as to how long the game will have to be halted for as the fan is moved into the waiting ambulance. Obviously we wish the fan all our good wishes and the health of the fan comes first.”
