Hartlepool hand suspension to former Crewe player charged with raping woman

Hartlepool United hand a suspension to former Crewe Alexandra player Oliver Finney who has this week been charged with raping a woman.

The 25 year old midfielder faces one allegation, which according to reports, are said to have happened in Cheshire in 2022.

Finney, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, joined the National League outfit from the League Two side back on January Deadline Day. In April 2023, he scored his first Hartlepool goal with a long distance strike in added time to beat Swindon 2–1.

Cheshire Police said he had been summonsed to appear at Crewe Magistrates’ Court on the 13th of November 2023. Hartlepool United declined to comment when contacted by BBC Radio Tees but have since issued a statement.

HARTLEPOOL UNITED STATEMENT:

Hartlepool United have been made aware of a police investigation surrounding a first-team player which has been reported in the press today.

The allegation dates back to before the player joined Hartlepool United.

Upon being informed of the allegation and investigation for the first time the Club immediately placed the player on suspension pending the investigation outcome.

The matter is subject to an official process and therefore no further comment will made at this time.

Finney made 124 appearances for Crewe between 2016 and 2023, scoring 17 goals, before leaving for Hartlepool, where he’s played 20 times and netted twice. He’s also had spells of Halesowen Town and Nantwich Town.

Support for British Nationals Abroad

Rape and sexual assault can happen to women and men of all ages and backgrounds. While most visits abroad are trouble-free, we are becoming more aware of people being sexually assaulted whilst they are overseas.  Sexual assault is a very traumatic experience whenever and wherever it happens, but the trauma can be made even more difficult to deal with when it happens abroad.  We will be as helpful as we can to anyone who tells us they have had sex against their wishes or been attacked by someone wanting sex.

Personal Safety Advice Abroad

When travelling abroad, most people are keen to relax and unwind. Travellers, tourists and foreign businessmen and women can be prime targets for criminals, however. In order to minimise stress on your holiday or trip, take time to plan your personal safety strategy in advance. From keeping your valuables safe to avoiding violence, a little forethought may save you from becoming a victim of crime.
