Willand Rovers have become the second team this week to be kicked out of the FA Trophy, it has been revealed.
The Southern League Division One South side join Mossley to be expelled from the competition for breaching Football Assocation rules.
Willand were set to play at home to Larkhall Athletic, who instead will Paulton Rovers who have been reinstated into the competition.
Willand Rovers said on Twitter: “In 2015 one of our players played for a Welsh University side. Since 2016 he has played in Devon and is now playing for us. On Tuesday we had a message from the FA that he had not been cleared to play back in England.
“We were unaware of his playing circumstances before 2016. As a consequence we have pleaded guilty to playing an ineligible player today the FA removed us from the FA Trophy competition as per the rules.
“The club have until Monday to lodge an appeal we will meet tomorrow [Saturday] to discuss and release an appropriate statement as to the further conduct or conclusion of this case. The club does not hold the player or any member of the committee responsible for this oversight.
“Obviously as a club who believes in integrity and honesty we are disappointed and saddened by this weeks events.”
