Eight upsets produced in the FA Trophy First Qualifying Round

The FA Trophy was back in action this weekend but unfortunately majority of it fell foul to the weather, it didn’t stop there being upsets however.

It was the First Qualifying Round which included teams from tiers 7 and 8. Eight sides managed to cause a shock against opponents in a higher league than themselves.

First up in our round-up is hosts Sutton Coldfield Town, who managed to beat Stafford Rangers 2-1, the visitors took the lead in the 52nd minute through Brad Grayson before Reece Leek then equalised four minutes later, then Sutton comepleted the comeback shortly after when Reece Gibson found the net.

Next up is AFC Sudbury who knocked out Harrow Borough with a 2-0 win with goals coming from Billy Holland (47′) and Sean Marks (68′).

Westfield were another team to cause a shock by picking up a 1–0 win at home to Beaconsfield Town. George Frith (22′) the player on the scoresheet.

Maldon & Tiptree seem to love a cup run, first the FA Cup and now the FA Trophy. They progressed through by beating Cray Wanderers 3-0. Danny Parish scored a brace just before and after the break before Jorome Slew grabbed his side’s third of the afternoon.

Also through to the Second Qualifying Round is Aveley who won 3–0 against Bowers & Pitsea. All of the goals came in the first half, Alexander Akrofi on the 5th minute, Jason Raad doubling the leader and an own goal from Kenzer Lee on the stroke of half time.

Whitehawk also seal their place into tomorrow’s draw after beating Hendon 4-1. Connor Tighe scored twice in 20 minutes before Hendon’s Connor Calcutt got one back, David Martin however scored from the spot to restore the home side’s two goal lead then Lewis Unwin made it four.

 

Basildon United and Chesham United played out an entertaining game, but it was the hosts that went through after winning 5-3. Ayomikun Odukoya (51′, 88′), Ernest Okoh (55′), Adam Vyse (61′) and Harry Norman (89′) all scoring for the home side.

And lastly in this round-up, AFC Totton had to go to extra time to come back from behind twice to beat Weston-super-Mare 3–2.
