Group of Scunthorpe fans booed for invading pitch before fighting their own after Buxton penalty

A group of Scunthorpe fans took to invade the pitch before fighting their own after a penalty was scored by Buxton on Saturday.

It came on the 86th minute, with Scunthorpe tweeting there had been a break in play, as an ‘incident’ occurs, with it since confirmed there was a pitch invasion.

But it came following a spot kick, with Elon McKeown taken out, to which De Girolamo stepped up and made it 3-0, only for fans from the other end of the ground to break out on the pitch…

This game was a rearranged fixture from the abandoned game three weeks ago which saw Scunthorpe’s previous meeting with the Bucks being controversially called off because of heavy rain despite the away side leading 2-1 with five minutes of injury time remaining.

So the game was replayed, and it started with a flurry of good chances to Scunthorpe, but just couldn’t break the deadlock.

Momentum shifted in favour of the visitors who came out of the second half stronger went ahead through former Italian youth international Diego De Girolamo, who touched the ball up into the air and volleyed home into Fitzsimonsโ€™ top corner from the edge of the area.

Buxton soon rippled the net again, a loose ball in the Scunthorpe area couldn’t be cleared with the travelling support again celebrating as right-back Sam Minihan doubled his side’s lead with 30 minutes left on the clock.

An additional 11 minutes of injury time was to be played, with a penalty awarded by the referee, however, the tackle was adjudged by Scunthorpe to have been outside the box. De Girolamo slotted home and this is when the pitch invasion came.

In more heartwarming news, more than ยฃ50,000 has been raised to help pay staff wages, after the club’s owner withdrew funding leaving them apparently unpaid.

Club supporters The Iron Bru and The Iron Hour podcasts, along with other Scunthorpe supporters’ groups, put out an online fund on Friday, with the football community coming together to help them.

Chairman David Hilton took over as owner of the club back in January, but announced he was putting the club up for sale earlier this month, only to to then withdraw funding last week, saying in a statement that he felt his position was “untenable”, and he was “actively seeking a way out”.

Matt Ellis is behind the Iron Bru podcast and set up the Go Fund Me page “Support for Scunthorpe United staff”.

“We’re fundraising to set up a fund to support staff in these dire times – when undoubtedly they will need to pay bills, feed families and pay their mortgages,” he said.

“Scunthorpe United stands on the brink of the abyss, a proud community club that is over 124 years old.”

He added: “Chairman David Hilton has left the club on the brink, and its loyal and hardworking staff in dire straits.

“Please help us to create a safety net for everyone who is employed by the club.”

As mentioned, there was a sour end to Saturday’s match with a group of Scunthorpe fans booed for invading the pitch after a Buxton penalty…

@Harness1Grace: Our poor daughter was petrified due to the behaviour of Scunthorpe fans today. Football is for entertainment a place for people to come together and have a great time for all generations. Hope she will return

Mark Woolley: We have gone from being buoyant to yet another disaster! With rumours flying every where and very little time to save the club, we where warned and yet it as happened. We have to be so so careful in what happens next and get a strong structure in place that involves every aspect of Scunthorpe United from the very top down to the supporters where everyone should have a say in the future of our club. It was not right that Mr Hilton took the abuse he did, but iโ€™am sad to say he has left us in a far worse position then Mr Swann did! Mr Swann at least carried on funding the staff I know not at current levels but he did at least fulfil his obligations to the staff. We now have only a handful of staff, no catering income, nearly no stock in the club shop, no ground, and probably a squad that will get ripped apart, so thank you for nothing Mr Hilton and Mr Swann for making us a complete and utter basket case.

Katy Louise: Thank you Lee Turnbull and all those at the club for all you do, day in, day out. #UTI

Nathan Drake: Guys and girls look at Macclesfield Bury Rushden & Diamonds etc it’s not over! Form a phoenix club ?! ๐Ÿ™‚

Stuart Maw: Top man! We all stand in solidarity with each other and other clubs in the mire like Southend! UTI

Kurt Andrew: Good luck guys hope you get it sorted

Chris Skinner: At last a touch of class from the club. That’s been a long time coming. Hats off Lee. X

Martin Stothard: It’s in the name of the club United we stand!

Caroline Maxwell: And we care deeply about you guys as well as the club. X

Susan Maw: Seeing the emotion from Lee today during the Moody speech literally broke me! United we stand x up the iron x

Philip Sherwood: I much as I enjoyed today’s result (Buxton fan both games ๐Ÿ‘) I get no enjoyment out of your predicament, met some top folk in your bar today , really hope it all works out for you๐Ÿคž

Paul Heathcote: As a bury supporter I really feel for you guys. no football club should have to go through this. Used to go watch scunny when I lived there. Good luck guys hope you get it sorted

Vin Ashton: Tears reading this. The fight is on. Just cant let the club disappear. Certain people need police investigation. This is not right. UTI.

Callum Britcliffe: We care about you all aswell i hope today shown the staff and the players what this club means to all us supporters UTI!

Olly Michael Paxton Gower: It’s been a privilege and an honour Scunthorpe United FC. We hope to see you again in some shape or form. From everyone in black and amber ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿงก๐Ÿฏ
