Graeme Souness says Premier League is “doomed” in furious rant at decision

Graeme Souness says Premier League is “doomed” in furious rant live on Sky Sports at a decision on Newcastle United over the weekend.

The 68 year old pundit was left reeling over referees continuing to give penalties like we saw one awarded to Leicester City against the Magpies on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ side produced a comfortable 4-0 home win over Eddie Howe’s struggling side at the King Power Stadium.

However, the first half was a very tight contest, only until the Foxes were handed a spot kick, after Maddison went down under a challenge from Jamal Lascelles.

Youri Tielemans slotted home the penalty kick, and the home side went on to dominate throughout the rest of the match.

Souness was left bemused by the penalty call, claiming the Premier League will be in trouble if there are more decisions like that.

“If we’re giving penalties for that we’re doomed,” he said to Sky Sports after the match.

“Maddison actually kicks himself. He gets himself in the air and runs into (Newcastle defender Jamaal) Lascelles.”

It eventually became all too easy for Leicester in the second-half, as Patson Daka doubled their lead on the 57th minute, before Tielemans secured his brace to put the contest to bed.

Maddison found the net in the last five minutes to add further misery to the Toon Army, while Eddie Howe was also furious with the penalty decision.

“The penalty has a huge bearing on the game, it wasn’t a penalty,” he said.

“Maddison goes over with the smallest of contact and I am disappointed the referee didn’t go over to the (VAR) monitor to watch a replay.

“At 0-0, the game was very much on for us to go and win but the penalty changed the game.

“I would encourage referees to go and see it back themselves rather than take direction from other people.

“I won’t comment on Maddison – that wouldn’t be right – but we are so disappointed with how the goal came about. If it’s not a penalty, it shouldn’t be given.”

Twitter users reacted as Graeme Souness says the Premier League is “doomed” in a furious rant at the Newcastle decision…

@jairosherwin: Looks deliberate by VAR official’s to influence this weekends game’s for certain teams

@woofly32: That’s an outrageous dive. Looking like a proper dolphin with diving like that

@Topgolfertiger: A penalty? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 WTF was the VAR doing? Making a cuppa? A number 1? A number 2? Honestly 🤣🤣🤣

@AaronBates91: But nothing will change! Best league in the world, worst officials

@LeeDuggan7: He was going down before he even got touched 🤣

@SteveLewisCrowe: Yes we’ll let you have the Saudi deal, but we’ll absolutely make sure you get relegated to keep the other teams happy…. it stinks

@Karl939: Are the mass media going to call out Maddison for diving? Cheating pure and simple.

@psbroadbent: It’s about time the commentators called it what it is – cheating.

@Fankar91: Don’t normally agree with him. But on this occasion he is spot on with his analysis.

@KB88AFC: Maddison does this constantly

@NeilCusack: 100% Dive. What’s the point in VAR?

@cdtplug: It was a blatant dive, simple as that.

@StretfordEndG: dont often agree with him, but this was fecking awful decision, everything about this is wrong, at best it should have been a yellow card for the dive

@JonDon235: Did he condemn Liverpool’s pen yesterday? Or Chelsea’s second pen? Or Man City’s?

@AaronLeeGunn: Agreed from a Leicester fan. I hoped VAR would try to cancel these

@Batchzor: We are a global league with players from all over the world. Why don’t the premier League employ the best referees from any country? We’ve only just got an Australian referee we should be all over the best refs from anywhere

@ArborCorpKorea: One of the biggest divers around. Does it all the time for free kicks in good areas too.

@Charlo80: Nothing better than officials ruining things, FIA and Var all in one day.

@stevietrow: Conflicted on this. Definite cheating but if it contributes to Newcastle going down it’s a fair trade off

@powdy23: Cheating plain and simple

@dannyadams111: Nothing to see here.. he’s English so it’s all fine

@eternaljimmies: Shocker of a decision, never a penalty. Lascelles only has himself to blame though however. Player of his experience should know better. He’s given Maddison an opportunity to give VAR a decision to make with that half hearted tackle and lazy leg combination
