Goals galore and some stunners as Southampton win 5-3 to knock Cardiff out of Carabao Cup

Goals galore and some stunners as Southampton win 5-3 to knock Cardiff City out of Carabao Cup to seal a place in the Third Round.

The first goal came just 10 minutes in, Tyler Dibling picking out Mateus Fernandes on the edge of the box, took a touch, then picked out the bottom corner beautifully to put the Saints ahead.

Cardiff got one back, but in spectacular fashion, against the run of play on 21 minutes as Rubin Colwill scored via the underside of Joe Lumley’s crossbar from 30 yards out.

Southampton were back in front on the half hour mark, a curled finish from Sam Amo-Ameyaw from just inside the box.

But Cardiff hit back four minutes into the second half as goalkeeper Lumley palmed Raheem Conte’s cross towards Ronnie Edwards who could only watch the ball roll into his own net.

Cameron Archer scored his first Southampton goal since joining from from Aston Villa to put the Saints ahead again on 55 minutes, then an instant response on 57 minutes as sub Alex Robertson levelled with a volley just two minutes later.

The game look set for penalties, however on 91 minutes, the ball was set up nicely for James Bree, who then
struck an unbelievable strike from 20 yards and then Archer added on the 94th minute to make it 5-3.

Southampton boss Russell Martin: “I’m very pleased with the win. I’m very pleased with the quality of goals with scored. I’m really pleased with a few of the performances; Cam Archer, James Bree, Adam Lallana when he came on the pitch was standing, helped the team so much. And then I have to put into context because I’m really annoyed about a lot of the stuff, about the three goals we conceed.

“So we have a lot of guys playing their first competitive game for us. It’s a tough opposition. The second half they threw absolutely everything at it because they’re nothing to lose, cup game.”

“We had a brilliant away following. They’re amazing. The amount of travelled on a Wednesday night for a cup game. They knew there’d be a lot of changes in the team. That’s why I said it in the press to make sure people knew what to expect.”

“So there was frustrated bits of course. It’s the first time a lot of them guys have been on the pitch competitively together. So there were moments they lacked a bit of fluidity. But when it did click and when they got it right, there were some beautiful moments. Some brilliant moments.”

Cardiff‘s Erol Bulut said: “We can take a lot of positives from today’s game when we see the youngsters, what they delivered, especially in the second half against a Premier League club.. We had chances at 3-3 to score which could mean we would be speaking differently now and maybe in the next round.

“It’s of course disappointing two minutes before the end to concede that goal. It would be great to go to penalties, particularly for the fans as it would make it more exciting, but the game is how it is.

“First half, I think we showed too much respect for Southampton. In the dressing room at half time I said, ‘We don’t have to respect anybody. They are players, you are players, go out and play the game and press high!’’, to give them more confidence, more freedom, and the second half was good.”

“This is what we expect from Rubin. Every week, I hope.” Erol added. “He has that quality; in training sessions he shoots, sometimes he scores goals like this at training. As the manager, I know he can deliver this level.

“We need Rubin for 90 minutes with that performance, and I know he can deliver it. He has to work on a few things, not to try and do everything alone and be a bit more disciplined.

“I try to give a lot of advice to all my players, not just Rubin, as much help as I can, but especially with him because I know what he can deliver.”

“Last season he was out for three months due to injury, so he needs time but today was really good – of course, he needs a few more games with the people around him.

“Not just him, also [Jesper] Daland, [Wilfried] Kanga too. They have to grow to each other. A few weeks later we can still talk about much, much more positive things.

“I’m happy with that performance, also with the youngsters, you can see what they delivered. For some of them, it was their first time playing against Premier League players.

“I remember what it was like at 17 playing your first minutes, so I can understand how they feel, but it was a a great performance they showed today. We came so close to winning the game.”

Here’s how fans reacted after goals galore and some stunners as Southampton win 5-3 to knock Cardiff out of the Carabao Cup…

@DanHampton1: Bree, Archer and Fernandes looked excellent tonight.. along with Dibling and SAA.. but a shoutout to Lallana who looked so calm and collected when he came on. #SaintsFC

@Jaaamesmiith: Fernandes seems the absolute 🔑 for me in midfield, the way he drives forward with the ball always wanting to attack the goal or play a through ball. He’ll give us a brand new dimension and energy in attack 💥🪄 #saintsfc

@SaintsFC_Youth: Going old school here, but I thought #SaintsFC Academy OG Adam Lallana looked class when he came on tonight.

@eleanor_hobby: No way did James Bree just pull that out the bag! 😅 #SaintsFC

@MattAshley1: James Bree take a bow son!! #saintsfc

@sjsmith52345316: It’s only one game so not getting carried away but particularly impressed by Fernandes this evening. Archer clinical but not heavily involved. Rather have that though than tappy passing around without shooting. ABK could be great again if willing and stays fit. #saintsfc

@james_white83: That was a mental game with some amazing goals. Some real positives there (won’t mention the defence). Fernandes, Archer class. Lallana still oozes class and can do a job. Bree WTF #SaintsFC

@saintbannerman: All the incredible Russball tonight from our nippers. SAA, SE, TD, LU, MF, CA, BK etc and who wins it with an absolute shitpinger? James. Fucking. Bree!!! (Yeah I know Archer bagged the actual winner) but still……. Jimmy. fucking. Bree. Enjoy the journey home #saintsfc fans💥

@timosullivan81: Mental end to the game. Sam AA,Les, Fernandes, Dibling excellent. Delighted for Archer and Bree. Lallana tidy in possession. Great to see Larios and the 2 Irish lads on the pitch. Been a great evening all told. Do we care who we get on the draw #saintsfc

@a11en222: This honestly might be the weirdest night I’ve had supporting this club. 5-3 cup win which had a Cardiff screamer, Southampton’s B team turning into 2012 Barca, James Bree thundercunt and Ramsdale is signing on a permanent 😂 #SaintsFC

@saint_daz: James Bree…. take a bow son.. take a f’ing bow… #saintsfc
