Gary Neville takes aim at the Prem and FA as manager Wayne Rooney gives the bleakest update yet on the future of Derby County.
The football world have been having their say amid Chelsea seeing their owner Roman Abramovich sanctioned, and what a bleak impact it could have on the Blues with their future thrown up in the air.
However it’s just another reminder that a lot of changes need to be made within English football today, with too many issues arising in the last decade whether it’s teams screwed over by those at the top or the way greediness has creeped in to the point it could break away from the top flight.
Gary Neville has issued a tweet pointing out the concerning matter not being dealt with, saying: “Why the EPL/FA are fighting the independent regulator appointment I have no idea.
“The evidence is compelling! Big picture, Bury, Super League, Derby, Dirty money or not, Fan Led Review, EFL support, PL review not done, no redistribution meets, Real, Barca, Juve axis etc.”
And he’s bang on, it’s almost as if it’s just being swept under the carpet, forgotten about or dragged out, and for what? Why are they not acting now before more clubs get caught up in it.
As mentioned by G Nev, Derby County are a club who might not exist come next season, and their manager Wayne Rooney has said that he is unsure whether the Rams will have a pitch or a kit next season.
The club entered administration in September 2021 and currently sit 22nd in the Championship having been deducted a total of 21 points this season.
Their administrators have said they are in “active dialogue” with potential buyers and “remain confident” of naming a preferred bidder in the future.
Last Thursday, the EFL said that it was satisfied Derby had funds to complete the season.
Speaking ahead of Derby’s match against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, Rooney said: “We’ve been informed that in the next four or five days things might happen. Hopefully that’s the case.
“Our job is to do everything we can to say in the Championship.
“We don’t know if we have a kit for next season, we don’t know if we have a pitch. Certainly we don’t have enough players.
“I’m worried, staff are worried, fans are worried.”
However, he did confirm that Derby have a fully fit squad to choose from for this weekend’s game. Rooney also praised Ravel Morrison, who scored a double against Barnsley last weekend, calling him “a breath of fresh air”.
Derby are five points away from escaping the relegation zone with 10 games left.
Rooney also spoke to the BBC about the problems he and his side are faced with, yet while doing this, is still attempting to pull of one of the most miracle of comebacks that football has ever seen.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen the following headlines over Derby…
28th Feb – EFL awaits ‘urgent’ funding update as deadline looms
2nd Mar – EFL says ‘lack of progress’ in naming preferred bidder threatens future
2nd Mar – Derby County ‘not wanted in Championship’, claims Rams boss
3rd Mar – EFL says administrators have provided proof of funding for season
4th Mar – Administrators remain hopeful of naming preferred bidder ‘shortly’
9th Mar – Wycombe and Derby administrators still haven’t come to a settlement
10th Mar – Binnie family say club has ended talks with them
Wayne Rooney has also spoken of his frustration over how Derby County’s off-the-field situation is not allowing him to do his job to “full capacity”.
Asked if he had a decision to make in the summer in terms of his future and is it a rebuilding job he is happy to take on for next year, Rooney said: “I think it depends on where the club is at.
“At the minute there is no guarantee the club will be here at the end of the season, so I think the next couple of months are crucial because, as I keep saying, and I have been saying it for a long time now, the rebuild of this club is a massive job, as big as any job out there to rebuild the squad, the club and the Academy.
“It is a huge task but we need to start being in a place where we can do that.
“My pre-season now would be planned. I haven’t even started it because I don’t know how many players we have got, what we can do, where we can go. So all these things in the background you need to plan way in advance are all getting put on hold.
“It is frustrating, frustrating not being able to do your job to full capacity but I understand that is where we are at, where we are at as a club. I am first to want to know the answers to the questions everyone is asking.
“Commitment has to come both ways. I have been at this club three years now. I love the club, I love the fans, the staff, the players but I need to be able to do my job, I have to be able to do my job.
“If I can’t do my job, then of course I have to sit back and think about that but as I have said previously I am committed to this club. I want the club to move forward, I want to be the one to move this club forward.”
Twitter users have their thoughts as Gary Neville takes aim at Prem and FA and Wayne Rooney gives his bleakest update yet on the future of Derby…
@kevp88: Because they don’t want to lose easy money by closing eyes of where it comes from
@GabSutton: There’s also Macclesfield Town, North Ferriby United, Hinckley United and Shaw Lane. Owners should be allowed autonomy, but within a framework that ensures their club’s long-term future is safe.
@kengrogan1: Come on Gary….. have a radio chat with Simon Jordan….. 2 great football thinkers!!!!! It would be very interesting.
@KevinOxford: I would say they don’t want to be found out.
@Sheepie_1985: Don’t forget what us Charlton Athletic fans went through too!
@GeorgeBrigham11: @GNev2 you forgot Rochdale
@drpie53: Whilst we’re at it Gary, isn’t it time to remove gambling shirt sponsors from PL teams? There’s tons of money in the game. Gambling is a problem for many.
@padja1: Because EFL won’t be able to do to other clubs what they’ve done to Derby and Steve Gibson won’t be able to run EFL anymore
@WayneFurlong1: You know why Gary! Money money money.
@yellapiss: Power. Money. Greed. Corruption. That’s the world of billionaires, that’s their characteristics, that’s how you make billions.
@anna_newbold: EFL isn’t fit for purpose.
@duukakuufho: Oh look Gary Glazer has spoke up as this may affect Salford been quiet on the Glazer’s since EFL and protecting his mate Ole 👍
@DevlinLFC:
Football clubs do not need a regulator…
The fit and proper persons test should be done by an independent regulator that is it..
All the problems start and end with bad owners
@savegrassroots:
Not forgetting the £Millions and £Millions the Premier League owes Grassroots football Gary #savegrassrootsfooty
@SL1878: You can add sky sports into all of it. You’re all greedy twats wanting a huge piece of the pie. Bet your life sky would want super league broadcasting rights. The sport is rotten to the core.
@ollie_walker: Surely the FA are supposed to be the independent regulator. If they aren’t then what the fuck are they doing?!
@adlamtom: shows that the premier leagues fit and proper person process is complete farce. If a club is run poorly financially it gets a points deduction. Be connected to a murderous dictator regime, invading and peaceful country and war crimes – how will the PL take action? They won’t
