Gary Neville claims Premier League should ban clubs from buying anyone if they’ve furloughed staff during the coronavirus pandemic.
Newcastle, Norwich, Bournemouth and Sheffield United have furloughed non-playing staff whilst Southampton and West Ham United have moved to defer players’ wages.
But the former Manchester United and England player has warned players they are having ‘wool pulled over their eyes by clubs’.
Neville said on Sky Sports: ‘What I would say in the bigger picture, these transfer discussions, [Harry] Kane for £200m, [Jadon] Sancho for £100m, big-money signings completely undermines the discussions they are having with players.
‘If you are having a 30 per cent pay cut across the board and you are talking about spending a billion on players, you may have to put a transfer embargo in place.
‘It is very difficult for players to see a transfer for £200m a few weeks later.
‘It doesn’t feel right to me. There is no smoke without fire, I would suggest the Premier League stop this and put a transfer embargo in place on all clubs that are trying to reduce their wages.
‘Players are having their wools pulled over their eyes by clubs.’
More clubs could follow a similar path to those looking to limit expenditure, especially when they are unsure of when they can continue to 2019/20 season.
Chelsea are said to be holding amicable talks between their managing director Marina Granovskaia and captain Cesar Azpilicueta.
Manchester United and Manchester City have already stated they will not be placing non-playing staff on furlough, it came after Liverpool made a U-turn on a decision to do so following a huge public backlash.
On Monday afternoon, Tottenham also made a U-turn after criticism from fans, saying they will no longer make use of government’s job retention scheme and will pay staff in full.

Sounds fair. If you can’t afford to pay your staff and taking taxpayers money, you can’t be splashing millions on signings and agents fees etc

He’s right again our @GNev2 … of you’re relying on state bail outs, how the heck can you afford to sign players. You’ve essentially had state help when others haven’t.

Nah probably do them a favour so they don’t waste the money they do have on someone like Joelinton again.

Doubtful – he’s saying it because it’s clearly the right thing to say. The taxpayer should not be indirectly buying football players for wealthy PL clubs.
In any case, United wouldn’t furlough their players anyway.

Couldn’t agree more. Bloody cheek furloughing staff saying they can’t afford it, then going to buy a player for £10-£20m pisstake that would be.

Gary Neville 100% right – clubs saying they cant afford to pay staff shouldn’t be able to afford millions to buy players
He has backed up his words with actions through this crisis and not for the first time either

I agree with him, I’m embarrassed being a spurs fan with what Levy has done, with the amount of money that greedy weasel earns he could’ve easily helped the staff out of his own pocket
