“Branden Horton brings National League pedigree, while there’s o chance for Declan Howe, who hit 67 goals in Gainsborough Trinity’s last two campaigns. 8th”

7) WOKING – FourFourTwo said in their verdict: “The Cards improved under Neal Ardley following the ex-Wimbledon and Notts County manager’s arrival in December.

“He’s overseen promotion pushes with Notts County and Solihull, so hopes will be higher than last term’s 15th after a full pre-season.

“Luke Hall joins from Worksop and boasts real potential, as does ex-Kidderminster left back Calen Richaeds. Surprise package? 7th”

6) ALTRINCHAM – FourFourTwo said in their verdict: “”Alty, disappointed to miss out on the play-offs, have since suffered three high-profile exits: Alex Newby (to York), Justin Amaluzor (Grimsby) and, most painfully, 23-goal Regan Linney to Carlisle.

“James Gale and striker Jimmy Knowles come in from EFL clubs, yet the shrewdest signing may be busy Boston midfielder Keaton Ward. 6th”

5) SOUTHEND – FourFourTwo said in their verdict: “The Shrimpers were 10 minutes from a fairytale promotion at Wembley until Oldham snatched play-off final victory from their grasp with two goals in two minutes.

“Kevin Maher’s side have plenty to build on, though, having restored the feelgood factor to long-suffering fans. 6th”

4) ROCHDALE – FourFourTwo said in their verdict: “After they threw away a two-goal lead in their Dale ore eliminator against Southend, still pondering what might have been.

“Kairo Mitchell, who hit 14 goals last season, has been released but veteran striker Ian Henderson has signed a new deal at 40.

“Defenders Dan Moss and Bryce Hosannoh hove arrived, Moss having earned good reviews in his time of Woking. 4th”

3) FOREST GREEN – FourFourTwo said in their verdict: “It was written in the FourFourTwo magazine: Steve Cotterill’s men finished 3rd in their first non-league season since 2016-17 but rarely blew opponents away and led Southend in the play-offs before a shootout loss.

“They’ve taken Robbie Savage (and three of his Macclesfield players), but does he have the nous? 3rd”

2) CARLISLE – FourFourTwo said in their verdict: “Mark Hughes managing in non league? The Mark Hughes? “Yes, the very same, and it’s an illustration of Carlisle’s intent to make their stay here as brief as the single campaign bock in 2004-05.

“Back-to-back relegations comes with baggage, but they’re making the right moves: Regan Linsey is a top acquisition, the returning Morgan Feeney a big boost and David Ajiboye on injection of searing pace, 2nd”

1) YORK – FourFourTwo said in their verdict: “Adam Hinshelwood’s Minstermen exceeded all outside expectations with a 96 point season, but had to rue Barnet and the single automatic promotion spot after failing to turn up against Oldham in the playoffs.

“The Latics, have given them Mark Kitching by way of apology, and York have also added Hiram Boateng and promotion winner Ollie Banks and Ash Palmer, while Ollie Pearce remains after 31 goals last season. 1st”
