Four defeats in four for Peterborough who go bottom of League One after defeat to Barnsley

It’s four defeats in four for Peterborough who go bottom of the League One table after a 1-0 defeat to Barnsley on Tuesday night.

Peterborough have lost their opening four games for the first time in the EFL while Tom Cleverley’s Plymouth have also lost all four following their relegation from the Championship.

Barnsley are up to 3rd after coming away with all three points thanks to Caylan Vickers’ 44th-minute deflected strike off David Okagbue.

This extended Barnsley’s strong start with 10 points from four games. Both sides had chances included, and shots hitting the woodwork, but Barnsley held on for the win, with the result also their first clean sheet in 19 games.

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson said, per Peterborough Today: ā€œUnfortunately we have lost, but I have seen enough tonight to tell me results will turn soon. It’s not been a good start to the season, but we will be fine, I’m convinced of that.

“If we see performances like that, I’m convinced that results will turn. We are just due a little break and we need to make sure we keep working hard to get that.

ā€œWe will be fine. Everyone is doom and gloom and that can happen ,but we’re about 8% into the season and there’s a long way to go. I am convinced we can have a good season. We may have to just suffer a bit in the short term.

ā€œIt was a game where they have got a lucky deflection and scored from it. One of my players has switched off and suffered a lapse of concentration and you just can’t have that.

ā€œWe’ve had one or two moments in the game, but a key moment was when we weren’t given a penalty in the first-half. How you can give a free-kick to Barnsley when Kyrell Lisbie has gone clean through and Ogbeta has brought him down. Only the referee can answer that.

ā€œWe started the second half strong and hit the bar and Gustav Lindgren has had a good chance in the last second. I can’t be critical of the players a they had a go, they kept going and that’s what I expect. We need to play with that tempo and urgency.

ā€œWe changed the team and George Nevett came in and was the best player on the pitch.

ā€œWe had some good opportunities, I’m not going to be critical of my team because they gave everything tonight.

ā€œThere’s two or three moments at the end where they have cut through us because we’re chasing a goal and that can happen and we got lucky they didn’t get a second. In terms of energy and endeavour though and desire to win a game of football, it was all there tonight.ā€

Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane said, per Barnsley Chronicle: ā€œIt’s a relief. When the clock was ticking down you think ā€˜come on – clean sheet, clean sheet’ and win obviously. I am delighted for the lads to tick it off, especially so early in the season. I am really really pleased with that.

ā€œWe conceded late againstĀ BoltonĀ on Saturday so if we were to have conceded late tonight it would have been a completely different feeling in terms of throwing away leads. I am delighted to have flipped it on its head.

ā€œI am really proud of the lads at the back for the clean sheet. It’s something we worked really hard at. It will go a long way for us. We gave them their chances but other than that, I felt pretty comfortable. They had one little chance right at the end.

ā€œIt’s been endless amounts of work on the training ground and in the classroom, reviewing the backline and really breaking down the game. But you don’t get the confidence boost until you see it come through in a game.

ā€œWe’re really fortunate to have a talented footballer like Caylan. His goal took a little deflection, but you couldn’t tell it was his weaker foot.

ā€œI said to the lads at half-time we were loose. The goal came at a good time, but we came away from the structure I want. We cranked it up in the second half in terms of chances created but didn’t put them away. It should have been a much easier night.ā€

Twitter users gave their reaction with it four defeats in four for Peterborough who go bottom of League One after defeat to Barnsley…

@theposhfan: The scoreline might have been narrow, but the level of quality between the two teams wasn’t. Actually heartbreaking seeing what we’ve become.

@sjmcnulty_: Worst posh side I’ve seen in last 20 years. Proper relegation fodder

@Declan18037: Teams gonna be the death of me. Couldve been like 6. Only Reyes deserves any appreciation and thats ONLY because the woodwork was on his side. No final product just pinball football and lucky when it gets through to final 3rd.

@milanvanco1: Dull. No quality up front whatsoever. If we do not create chances we won’t be score the goals. Effort was there, especially the 1st half but we are lack of quality. MoM Reyes

@mrrobgraham: This isn’t Fergie’s fault. He’s coaching NL and League 2 players and expecting to compete against top League 1 teams. @DMAC102 has blocked me because I dared to question his authority, but for all the good he has done, it is time to go. Let’s not kid ourselves, we didn’t match them. On another day, they could have had 5. Reminded me of one of those FA Cup 1st round ties where the non-league team huff and puff for a while and eventually run out of ideas.

@SthNorfolkPosh: Played much better but still no end product, Odoh woeful again. Thought Khela and Nevitt were very good though.

@Sidneykidney4; Narrow? Barnsley hit the post twice and missed other great chances. It should have been 5. Posh are a shambles and nailed on for relegation. #McAsnopoints

@PufcSimmo14: Fucking dull. No quality going forward. Why did we keep playing from the back. It did fuck all and slowed us down. All teams need to do is score first and we are done. Shows how shit we are and that was our best performance so far. Odoh can fuck off. Would take 50p for him #pufc

@CYMRU270: Fair play lads that number 9 of yours must be so embarrassed. Scored a pen at our place, celebrated like Ronaldo only to (as predicted) be fucking wank

@Storrinho: Get Odoh, Lindgren gone, two new forwards in to replace. A number starting number 9 so I don’t have to watch my striker ruin every attack possible. We’ll be much better #pufc
