Former Premier League player suffers horror injury with game abandoned and wife shaken up

Former Premier League player Stephen Ireland suffers a horror injury with the Sunday League game abandoned and his wife shaken up.

Footage emerged of the moment with Wythenshawe Vets 3-0 up against South Liverpool Vets, the CVFL Premier Cup Final tie halted within the first half an hour then finished at half time.

Players watching on had their hands on their heads in shock at what they had just witnessed. The fan who recorded the video saying it took about 30-40 minutes for the ambulance crew to turn up.

Wythenshawe Vets said in a statement issued: “Stephen is overwhelmed and incredibly grateful for the support following today’s incident in the Veterans Final.

“His wife Jess shared: ‘Thank you to everyone at today’s game who helped in any way. It was a really upsetting and shocking moment, but the care and unity shown made a huge difference.

“We are so grateful not only to the Wythenshawe FC fans, but also to South Liverpool Vets and everyone at Warrington Rylands: you were all outstanding.’

“A special thank you to the paramedics and ambulance team from Warrington Hospital for their swift and professional care.

“In true Stephen spirit: “Superman will return.” We’re all behind you, Stephen. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery.”

The Manchester Evening News says that Stephen Ireland is ‘doing as well as can be expected, was taken to hospital by ambulance’, as well as keeping the club updated. Also, ‘both teams and the League are to decide the next steps’.

The team have also been invited to play Conor McGregor’s Blackforge FC in Ireland, plus, they will take part in the $1million winner-takes-all TST event in America at the end of May.
