Fighting breaks out in the streets and in the stands as Spain beat England in Euros Final

Fighting breaks out in the streets and in the stands as Spain went on to beat England 2-1 in the 2024 Euros Final.

A number of videos have emerged on social media showing English fans involved in multiple incidents of violence, including fights among themselves and clashes with Spanish fans.

These events were widely condemned, with many expressing disappointment and embarrassment at the behaviour of those causing trouble.

Ex-Man City director Chris Bird, who was at the game, said via Twitter: โ€œEngland fans fighting each other in the first half once again showing there is a section of support who donโ€™t deserve finals or these players. Disgusting experience, I will never watch England away ever again.โ€

England supporters lashed out at each other in the stands of Berlinโ€™s Olympiastadion upon watching their side fall to yet another heartbreaking defeat.

As seen in the videos, there were also clashes allegedly in London, Benidorm, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Croatia, Turkey, Exeter, Hertford, Welwyn, Oxford, Staffordshire and a fan zone in Berlin.

Mikel Oyarzabal’s 86th-minute goal won it for Spain after substitute Cole Palmer briefly gave England so hope when he cancelled out Nico Williams’ opener.

The result now means that England’s wait for a trophy will extend to 60 years by the 2026 World Cup, and questions remain on Gareth Southgate’s future.

It’s thought that around 50,000 England supporters made the trip to Berlin ahead of the final, with pubs and bars back home had started to fill up from lunchtime, with kick off at 8pm on Sunday night.

England fans had been warned by German police to avoid any repeat of the scenes of violence that marred the previous Euros final, against Italy at Wembley in 2021, with ticketless thugs storming into the stadium.

Before Sundayโ€™s game, a spokesman for Police Berlin had told Telegraph Sport: โ€œEntering the stadium without a valid ticket is a criminal offence and will be prosecuted consistently.โ€

Britainโ€™s most senior football police officer Mark Roberts also said that he would pursue banning orders for anyone found to have been involved in disorder while following England.

But on the whole, England fans were praised for their โ€œgood behaviourโ€ from across the tournament, with incidents of hooliganism and anti-social behaviour lower than during previous tournaments, per inews.

Police say there was 73 people identified as England fans being arrested and 13 banning orders served, though that was confirmed ahead of the final against Spain.

The Chief Constable of Cheshire Police said that there had been a โ€œsmall number of instances of disorder which has resulted in 66 arrestsโ€ during Englandโ€™s stay in Germany and added: โ€œThese incidents have been swiftly dealt with by the German police with the support of UK officers.โ€ There was a further 7 at the weekend upto until the final.

Before the semi final against the Netherlands, 5 people sustained minor injuries when Netherlands supporters attacked England fans in the town. See more on that HERE.

Incidents dealt with by police in Germany saw the culprits cause bodily harm, throwing bottles, breaking drug laws and riding an e-scooter while under the influence of alcohol.

Police add that there have also been a small number of issues around drug-taking and excessive drinking among the Three Lions fanbase.

PC Stuart Dickerson, from the UK Football Policing Unit, said to Sky News: โ€œWe have seen people openly taking cocaine off the back of their hands.

โ€œTheyโ€™re drinking beer thatโ€™s a lot stronger than theyโ€™re used to and people tend to get carried away and do things they donโ€™t do at home.โ€

The number of arrests of England fans went down to less than the 90 of which we saw for Euro 2020, when a number of games were held in the UK.

Home Office figures state there were 39 football-related arrests at the Italy game, 28 at the Scotland match and 18 for the semi final fixture against Denmark.

The Euro 2020 final saw thousands of people without tickets try to storm into the national stadium to see England play Italy, with Netflix doing a documentary on it.

While arrests may have been down during the tournament, Football Banning Orders are on the rise across the sport in the UK, 1,624 issued in 2023, a rose of 24% from the 1,308 that were issued in 2022, and that was slightly down on 1,359 for 2021.
