Fenerbahce Favorite to Sign Arsenal Outcast Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil to Fenerbahce seems to be close to realizing, as the Arsenal outcast is nearly out of contract at the North London club. His next destination looks to be Turkey.

Ozil, 32, was previously associated with a move to DC United in Major League Soccer. Still, a recent rumor from reports in Turkey claims the skillful midfielder is about to sign a three-and-a-half-year contract with Fenerbahce.

Ozil will be given a $3 million signing bonus at Fener and will be on wages of $6.1 million per season. Further on, Arsenal will cover the first six months of his wages at Fenerbahce, so, practically, he will arrive in Turkey as a loanee.

According to Ozil’s agent, Dr. Erkut Sogut, Ozil’s future will be decided in the next 7-10 days, and he is in negotiations with several clubs, including Fenerbahce and DC United. Anyhow, Ozil’s wish is to stay at Arsenal until the summer. With all transfers like these happening, the future is uncertain for the Premier League. Why Fenerbahce?

The former German international and world cup winner of 2014 has Turkish ancestry, and Turkish is his first language. Fenerbahce is the team he has supported as a child, and Ozil has already built the house in Istanbul where he plans to live with his wife Amine Gulse, who is also Turkish. To add to this, the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was also a guest at Mesut and Amine’s wedding back in 2019.

Ozil is free to negotiate with non-English teams from January 2021 since his time at Arsenal is coming to an end; his contract of $475,000 per week will finish in the summer. It’s more than evident that Arsenal wants to offload Ozil this summer as he wasn’t included in the team’s squad to play in the first half of the 2020/21 season and is highly unlikely to play any part in the second half of the campaign.

This wouldn’t be a happy way to end Ozil’s Arsenal career as his relationship with manager Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy seems to have broken down since last March. Mesut was key in Arteta’s rebuild of the Gunners before this happened, so this will go down as a bizarre ending to his Arsenal career, but the truth about his long absence will be revealed in the years ahead.

What’s Ozil’s Legacy at Arsenal?

After arriving from Real Madrid at Arsenal in the summer of 2013, Ozil sparked on his debut. Many believed his arrival allowed Arsenal to continue attracting top players to join the master number 10.

He managed to win 4 FA Cup titles during his spell at Arsenal and has helped the Gunners to maintain the top four spot for many years. Perhaps there’s a general feeling that he never had quite the team around him to support his moments of genius.
