The favourites to become new York City manager has been revealed as the club sack their boss after defeat to Rochdale on Monday.
The Minstermen wave goodbye to Michael Morton after six months at the helm following their 3-1 loss at home to Rochdale, leaving York 23rd in the National League table.
Morton had took up the role on an interim basis after David Webb was axed back in February and stayed in charge for this season, but have gone winless this term.
Webb came in to replace John Askey but was sacked after just 11 games with the club struggling to maintain their league status, with Morton stepping in and led them to a 19th placed finish last season.
Assistant manager Tony McMahon will now be in temporary charge as the club begins the process of recruiting a new manager.

Here’s what fans said as the favourites to become new York City manager are revealed…
@shaqai_szn: Won’t forget his contribution last season. A top man, just not the right one now, and moving forward. Need to get this appointment right now.
@8days2trophies: Needed to be done, pressure on to make the right choice
@DerwentReds: Good. Let’s not piss about with kids coaches, ex players n all that. Get an experienced national league manager that has history of getting promoted out of this league. These past 8 months have been horrendous watching Morton Ball
@rocknrollnobody: I like the guy and he clearly loves the club, bit he’s out of his depth and wasn’t able to get a tune out of an above average squad. Sad it has come to this, but it is the right decision. All the best to Morton in whatever he does next.
@Charliebwright1: That was Fast!
@heyheyitsteve: A shame, but zero wins in six this season isn’t a record the club can afford to see continue. Interested to see who’ll be taking over, hope we can get on a good run going forward. I liked Mikey as a person, hope he does well in future roles.
@tombarneybarnes: Glad to hear he’s been offered an internal role, great lad who cares so much about the club
@neilguy78: Always said to see where we were after 10 games but no wins in 6 & bottom of league is not where we hoped for. Hope @morton1984 chooses to stay as he has loads to offer but it’s always a difficult one when someone new comes in. Big decisions being made & another big one coming
@snowdrop14: Hoping Mikey stays on in some form. Personally, I saw some flashes of great football today. The squad clearly has talent. Just needs the right person in there to knit it all together
@J_Harvey10: FairPlay to Matt for giving the bloke a chance. Not worked out , now go and get a coach to drag this lot out of the rut.
@dave_olsen16: Hard to argue with the decision but glad Mikey’s been offered another role and hope he stays. His passion for the club is clear and he did a good job keeping us up last season.
@eeevierose: Correct decision but feel sorry for the man, shouldn’t have been offered the position in the first place
@ReeceHope3: Correct decision finally, wish him the best, but not a manager for this level.
@TheSasquatch74: Right decision, tough one for the owners im sure as he is a decent fella but we need someone to get the best out of a talented squad.. onwards ⚽️👊
@simonsoothill: Never nice, especially to someone who seems a decent bloke. However, we’re effectively bottom of the league so need to sort this out sharpish.
@Dan_Simmonite: All the best for the future Mikey. Personally I think we need a Worthington/Askey/Mills type manager – someone who has an aura about them and somebody for everyone in the club to respect and look up to. Need everyone pulling together 🙏
@YCFCStadium: All the best to Mikey. Will be best known as the manager who kept us up after Henderson fired Askey (stupid decision as we know) and the Webb experiment did not work out (at all). It’s a tough business, so fair play to Matt for making the decision, which won’t have been easy.
