Favourites to become new Salford City manager after sacking their head coach Neil Wood

The top six favourites to become the new manager of Salford City have been revealed after sacking their head coach Neil Wood.

Their 5-1 defeat at Tranmere Rovers on Boxing Day, meant they have gone eight League Two games without a win, with the club sitting 21st in the standings.

Neil Wood, 40, had guided the Ammies to the League Two playoffs for the 2022/23 season, having come in to replace Gary Bowyer in May 2022.

However, he has unfortunately struggled to repeat that or do better this time around, with the latest heavy proving to be his final game in charge.

The club said in a statement: “Salford City Football Club announce the departure of Head Coach Neil Wood.

“The Club would like to thank Neil for his hard work over the last 18 months, including leading the Club to our highest-ever finish in Sky Bet League Two last season, and we wish him well in his future role within football.

“The process of appointing a new Manager will commence immediately, with Assistant Coach Simon Wiles preparing the team for Friday’s game against Grimsby Town.”

Speaking to the media after the game captain Alex Cairns said: “It’s not great at all. I don’t think any of us expected that result to happen.

“It’s not even tough to take, just not good enough at all, all over the pitch or anywhere, we just need to bounce back with a lot better performance that that and people need to start standing up and putting their chest out, start putting performances in.

“Fans pay their hard earned money to come and watch the lads, especially on Boxing Day with the Christmas festivities, everyone wants a good performance, everyone wants to be excited, and that’s just not good enough from every single one of us.

“As a group we have to be accountable for that performance, we’re the ones out on that pitch and even if we’re not playing well we have to stand up and be counted, win our individual battles, and be together on the pitch, and we weren’t that.”

Tranmere Rovers boss Nigel Adkins expressed his delight at his side’s display.

“I thought we were outstanding, first half in particular. I thought our defensive shape, our resolve, our organisation to be aggressive when we go and press, we scored goals from that.

“Harvey Saunders getting on the scoresheet, massive threat all the way through. Connor Jennings, I can’t speak highly enough of him.

“But for me, the way we pressed as a team, when we talk about a compact shape, to press as aggressively as we did, because these (Salford) want to play, they want to pass it, and we nullified that in a big, big way and we were such a threat.”

This is how fans reacted with the favourites to become new Salford City manager revealed after the sacking their head coach Neil Wood…

@CMG3432:
@GNev2 as a pundit: You can’t just keep sacking managers, they have to be given a chance to build their own identity
@GNev2 as club owner: sacks his 4th manager in 3.5 years
Man’s the biggest hypocrite going 🤣

@Spurspapers: Can Gary Neville please stop telling everyone else how to run their football clubs 😭

@LukeAndo2007: Did a great job last season which everyone can appreciate but it was always gonna happen

@matthew_j194: 2nd manager this season to fall victim to Nigel Adkins’ tricky whites

@elismpj: I thought Gary Neville didn’t like sacking managers?

@stephen_dimmock: Probably the least surprising managerial departure for a while, especially considering how bad their result yesterday was

@BurneyMcr1: Think they need to realise that they’re not a League One club. Desperate for quick promotions etc but that club doesn’t have a fan base to support the constant progression and promotions. They were gonna hit a ceiling at some point and have in League Two. Think English Gretna.

@KyleTalbot7: Paul Hurst all over it I reckon

@S11anan1: Dam should probably hire solskjær

@footboxing: disgusting this, managers should be given years and 47 transfer windows before they get sacked…. thats what all the co-owners tell us week in week out.

@generationalred: All the best Woody. Gave us some great memories from last season and injuries haven’t helped this year but the right decision from the club as something needed to change.

@JonnyMc1: Interesting Aristotle @GNev2 taken issue with the timing of new investment at United (because it wasn’t Qatar) but is completely fine with canning a manager two days after Xmas.

@tmoffi94: Remember when this lot sacked Richie Wellens having just won the EFL Trophy and were sitting just outside the playoffs. No one will mourn if they get relegated. A waste of an EFL place.

@DazzaDavies: Announcing a new 25% stake in a football club over the festive period is poor timing. Sacking the manager over the festive period is acceptable.

@BrianPingu: Merry Christmas, Neil. Classy timing again from the multi-millionaire owners…

@FitzpatrickKev: Another one potted 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ Surely sacking managers every season isn’t the way forward to build a club and creating stability @GNev2 🤔

@AnnieEaves: “No functioning organisation” would make a big announcement on December 24th apparently. Even if a positive, it would be a “disgrace”, and yet sacking someone in a high profile way on December 27th is absolutely fine…

@jordandavies09: You’ve gotta look inwards at your head coach selection processes cos this happens a fair amount with you guys

@scott_trfc: Second time a Tranmere loss has lead to $alford sacking their gaffer 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@bigdikky5: Can the whole of football come together and watch the Documentary vanity project +5 years fall back into the abyss like it deserves. No fanbase, no thirst for further development in local area… just in the Bin… spending massively above sustainable means…a brat thats bad for FL

@joshashtongolf: Wish him all the best in the future. Hopefully the board will back the new manager and get some decent signings in come January

@edward_w97: Not that convinced this will change much. Fully fit squad, Wood has Salford in a fine position, maybe not back up in the top places again but certainly nowhere near the bottom. Victim of unfortunate injuries here. Any manager will struggle without people like Bolton or Hendry…

@MichaelBuckle17: Another manager sacked by Neville and co 😂😂 but they need time these managers apparently

@xSpudhead: we’re gonna get new manager bounced aren’t we #GTFC

@StandingAlone77: Not surprising. Can’t lose 5-1 at home to a team who’ve won 1 away game before this in 2023. Only Donny left in the bottom 7 who haven’t changed the manager.

@93rdmin: What horrific timing aye Gary

@8illyliar___: Salford City 2023 has been a disgrace to the end. The timing of this is truly awful and no functioning organisation would even think about it. Anyway all the best to Neil Wood, I hope he can somehow work out a way to enjoy his and his family’s New Year celebrations ❤️ @GNev2

@aitchyrobinson: Can’t believe you’d do this at Christmas, you monster @GNev2

@OneSizeFitz89: Sacked another 😂😂😂. Whilst having the decency to criticise on how other clubs are ran! @GNev2

@Kippax752: Go on @GNev2 🤣 🤣 another one bites the dust, meanwhile Stockport County making it look piss easy to get up and out of the league. Hopefully Salford are relegated and can take their 200 fans with them back to the unibond.

@Lancsiron: Salford are at it again… Now who will they go for…. Anyone who goes in knows they have to succeed and look like they will be promoted…
