Frank Lampard speaks on signing new contract; fans react to Coventry’s new home kit

We check out the first words from Frank Lampard, who speaks after signing a new contract; and fans react to Coventry City’s new home kit.

Well deserved this for Frank, taking the job at Coventry late November 2024, sitting 17th in the Championship, and just 2 points above relegation at the time.

He immediately transformed them and took them to 5th and the playoffs by May 2025, losing in semi final to Sunderland.

Coventry used heartbreak as motivation and momentum for the 2025/26 season, and finished top of the Championship with 95 points, sealing promoted back to the Premier League after 25 years. What a job he has done.

The club said in a statement on their website: Coventry City are delighted to announce that Head Coach Frank Lampard has signed a new contract until 2029.

The 48-year-old has enjoyed a very successful period since taking charge back in November 2024.

After taking the team from 17th position to the play-offs in his first season, Lampard then guided the Club to the Sky Bet Championship title last term, securing our return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years.

He has taken charge of 82 matches in total, winning 45 of them, as he edges closer towards 100 matches at the helm.

The former Chelsea midfielder has built an incredible connection with supporters, staff and the City of Coventry over the course of his tenure.

Lampard is excited for the next chapter with the Sky Blues and preparing the team for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

After putting pen-to-paper on his new deal, Lampard said: “I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, it’s a real honour to represent this club.

“After the incredible work of everybody to get promoted and win the Championship, it was important to enjoy the moment, and we certainly did as a city.

“Our job then as staff, and for the players of course, is to firstly recharge but also focus on what we want to do and what we need to for next season. There’s a lot of work to do on and off the pitch as a football club, so those things have been on going.

“I’m looking forward to getting back with the players, to see them all and get ready for the new season.

“I’d like to thank everyone at the football club. The fans first and foremost for how they’ve supported the team, myself and my staff in allowing us to get to where we’ve got to. The spirit and togetherness we created last year was something great to be part of and now we want to continue it.

“Thank you to Doug King as well for giving me the opportunity to come to this football club and for his support of us. We work together and we know there’s a lot to do but we’re going to give it everything.”

Owner and Executive Chairman Doug King added: “I am absolutely delighted that Frank and his team have “signed the contract,” so to speak.

“Since arriving in November 2024, our club has been on a huge upward trajectory under his leadership and it is absolutely fitting after Championship glory last season that he leads us into our first Premier League season for a generation.”

A day after the announcement of Lampard’s contract extension, the club unveiled their much talked about new home kit.

The leak caused quite a stir on social media, a lot not so sure on it, the mention of Sheffield Wednesday’s design, others frustrated at the ‘betrayal’ of the Sky Blues’ sky blue tradition, their was also some praise of a nod to the 1987 FA Cup-winning strip.

The Sky Blues wrote on their website: Coventry City FC are excited to launch their 2026/27 Home Kit, their first back in the Premier League for 25 years.

Inspired by the 1987 team that lifted the FA Cup, and the city that celebrated it, the kit launches alongside a new video campaign to celebrate the Motor, Music and Fashion culture of Coventry.

The release stars the future music talent from our city, including Elliot Rawling (Overpass), Erin West (Shortstraw), Danniella Dee and her legendary Ska father, Trevor Evans.

The launch also involves TGR Haas Formula One® Team Principal Ayao Komatsu, an engineering product of our Motor City heritage, on the same week that Coventry City FC announced the opening of The Race Experience with TGR Haas F1® Team at The COV store.

Coventry car enthusiasts also came together to support the campaign, bringing cars from popular local car meets.

The video campaign also features a bespoke one-off Motor City jacket made by fashion designer Antonia Bronze to celebrate the Club’s promotion back to the Premier League.

The jacket, which features every result from the 2025/26 season, will be on display at The COV store at times throughout the upcoming months.

Fans react after Frank Lampard speaks on signing new contract and Coventry’s new home kit is unveiled…

@DeepPocketDoug: Are we really still whinging about the kit? Never happy our lot, seen a bloke under frank lampards extension post saying ‘I bet there’s a hefty relegation release clause’ enjoy the season or fuck off honestly. #PUSB

@TomUpto94934917: This has made my whole week already, one of the most crucial things we needed going into next season, he loves it here and him staying must mean he will be backed, contract until 2029 as well!, unbelievable video this as well, we’ve got super Frankie Lampard 🎶🩵😍 #PUSB

@TomUpto94934917: It’s definitely grown on me, the quality of this video is unreal I will say 👏🏻, I love the detailing on the shirt with the fans on, still unsure how I feel about it being a home kit but I do actually quite like it, excited for the release and to get my hands on it 🩵 Also has to be said I like the look of the green kit in the video as well, not sure if that will be the away but I am a fan of that, I love the detail inside the jacket too with the scores on from last season, extremely clever touch 👏🏻 #PUSB

@tagz96CCFC: One thing is it me or have our videos taken a massive step up cause they seem quality Also that’s sky blue. I’m sorry it is. In decent lighting that’s like the colour from older kits and we didn’t say that wasn’t sky blue back then. Looks brilliant so I’m a fan #pusb

@tagz96CCFC: Oh yes now. That is a stunner. Hummel smashed it out the park. That is absolutely fire this kit is. Definitely one of the best we’ve done for me. Also love the deeper sky blue line. Sky blue but more bold and smartness to it. Bloody lovely stuff this is. Work of art #pusb

@HajiWright11: Not even a bad kit tbh I understand why people don’t like it but either way everyone’s going to buy it 🤣 PUSB 🩵

@itsnotallwalkin: I get the intention and the anniversary, but to be honest, I didn’t like it in 87 either 😳. I’ll still buy it though! #PUSB.

@JackVonGrimm: Shite kit amazing video. 100% still buying all 3

@_itsmitchh: I mean if you’re so angered by a kit I dunno what to say, I couldn’t give a fuck if we play in bin bags, we’re in the premier league, just enjoy it man, I actually don’t think it’s terrible, it would be awesome if it was more sky blue but literally ain’t that deep 😬

@Aaronnn_96: Back in the Premier League after 25 years and we’ve morphed into Sheffield Wednesday 🤮 #PUSB

@Gurnery_: I don’t hate the design, it’s actually quite nice. I hate that it’s our home shirt. I’d rather us pay homage to the journey we’ve been on to get to the prem than a cup win 39 years ago.
