CLUB STATEMENT:
Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.

James Ducker (@TelegraphDucker): #MUFC insiders say that, while the head coach is a central part of the club’s ecosystem, he does not sit above it and that a collaborative approach and structure is essential to achieve success.
#MUFC sources say the Old Trafford hierarchy have not seen enough signs of evolution or progress to warrant Amorim staying in the role and play down the idea of power struggles or ultimatums.
#MUFC sources say Amorim has had unwavering support across the board internally and point out he was backed to the tune of around £250m in the transfer market making club one of highest spenders in PL in that time.
#MUFC sources believe the squad remains well placed to secure European qualification this season but that a change was necessary to give the team the best chance of meeting that target this season. (Min target of top six set in summer).
#MUFC insiders have stressed that Amorim was fully on board with the plan to prioritise the signing of three forwards – Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko – in the summer. Also of the belief all recruits are versatile enough to play in multiple systems.

Ruben Amorim launches astonishing attack on Man Utd hierarchy and walks out of presser
Here’s how fans reacted amid the favourites to become new Man Utd manager after making the decision to sack Ruben Amorim…
@kiranhole: Ruben Sacked. Not even surprised a bit, should’ve been way earlier based on performances. But Leadership should be questioned, cannot fool us as it’s only due to his rant yesterday. Still need CM signing in Jan. In the end we fans suffer & are stuck again in the same cycle #mufc
@Spin_Maestro: Absolutely fucking fuming this morning hearing that Ruben Amorim has been sacked by United. Yet another good manager let down by inept owners and lazy players. The vicious cycle starts all over again… 🙄 #ManagerRoulette #MUFC #Amorim
@pearcyyy: Oh what a surprise! @ManUtd sack another manager, as every manager since SAF has been the problem. Every outsider can look at the ownership & squad and see that it will never prosper regardless of the manager or system. No doubt Maresca will be the next in #MUFC #ManUtd
@vishy_united: Let’s be very clear…Amorim had a very difficult job, but he was given more than enough time in my eyes to show progress. Yes, many players were not available, but even when they were we were struggling a lot. And needless to say “Hierarchy” are on very thin ice here. #mufc
@FMScrapbook: as much as Amorim was frustrating at times, and the results weren’t good, I did believe he would help the club succeed again at some point. I think if he was a bit more flexible in his approach and personality, he might have lasted longer, but that’s not who he is #mufc
@marcwilko10: Not really a surprise, his record was terrible. Still wanted him to come good tho, but not to be. We just need to take our time and not rush into the next appointment, it needs to be RIGHT. 🔴⚪️⚫️ #MUFC
@xjamieee99: Yes results haven’t been good at all, yes the formations n system aren’t good but the deep down reason he’s been sacked is because they don’t want to give him money for transfers. End off. Respect Ruben for calling them out for lying 👏🏻👏🏻 #MUFC @ManUtd
@birchall81: #MUFC nothing surprises me anymore with this club. I suspect the majority of fans will accept and be happy with the decision to sack #Amorim. From top to bottom, including the players, all are absolutely f*cking clueless…
Ruben Amorim was not good enough to be Manchester United manager. It looked like he wanted to get the sack in a few occasions over the last year. Now he’s finally gone.
It’s also clear the club want a coach/yes man rather than a manager to take over #MUFC pic.twitter.com/0JK6LsqFvv
