We take a look at the favourites to become new Carlisle United manager as Paul Simpson leaves following defeat to Tranmere.
The 58 year old Cumbrian had ended his playing career with them, then returned for a second spell as manager in 2022, got them promoted to League One, but were relegated to League Two last season.
It’s not been the start they wanted either, Saturday’s defeat had been their third from four league matches this term.
An announcement was made hours after the final whistle, Paul Simpson, his assistant managers Gavin Skelton, Billy Barr, as has Simpson’s son Jake, who was the club’s head of performance, all departing.

Paul said in his last post-match interview, per News & Star: “When you are losing games, the manager gets the blame – that’s life.
“I get the emotion and it’s the things being said that I’m shaking my head at, not the booing.
“In any other industry, in any other walk of life, you don’t have to accept things like that, and I certainly don’t need to accept that.
“I have to, there’s nothing I can do about it, so I can’t say anything back. I’m not going to retaliate, I have to just walk off and I have to take it, and we’ll just move on.”
On fans’ frustrations and making feelings known: “It’s certainly not something I enjoy. I certainly don’t like it, but as a football manager I have to accept that that’s part and parcel of the game.
“As I say, I totally accept that people are going to boo when you’re not getting results. There’s nothing I can do, there’s nothing I can say, I just have to deal with it.
“I’m human. You want to be liked, you want to be appreciated. I want to win games of football. That’s the biggest concern for me. What people think about me is irrelevant as far as I’m concerned.
“It’s more I’m going to keep working to try and change the results around because that’s my job, that’s what I want to do.
“I come in every single day and I do what I believe is the right thing to do. And that’s what I’m going to continue to do.”
On the game: “You have to defend a bit better. We’ve got to track runners when they play one-twos, you’ve got to make blocks in your 18-yard box and both goals have come as a result of that.
“And then it’s what we do in the final third that we let ourselves down, because we had so many times that we got in there and we just don’t finish it off properly in terms of working the goalkeeper, in terms of getting crosses in that we can get on the end of.
“You’ve got to execute that final bit properly.”
This is how fans reacted amid the favourites to become new Carlisle manager as Paul Simpson leaves following defeat to Tranmere…
@AndyRob__: Don’t think anybody really wanted this but had to happen. Will always be a club legend
@Nick_Brown86: A sad end, I know it felt inevitable for a while now but I’m genuinely gutted that he couldn’t get us going again. Paul Simpson will forever be a hero to this football club for what he’s given to it & that should never be forgotten by anyone. Thanks for some incredible memories!
@Northernmunkey: Not how it should have been but possibly the right decision. Thanks for the memories Paul.
@RobMorley_: Gutted it’s come to this. Thank you for everything Paul Simpson. Give me the best days of my life following the club and it’ll never be forgotten 💙
@ChrisWi98306072: Love Simmo and forever grateful for what he’s done but this is the right call. Rob Elliott from Gateshead… break the bank to get him please 🙏
@Ry_CUFC: It had to happen before he ruined his own legacy. He’ll always remain a legend of the club in my eyes but changes should’ve happened a long time ago. Time to move on now and hopefully bring someone in who is going to get us playing some attacking football.
@CUFC_Lee: Always loved 🦊… carlisle boy through and through… hears to the future
@hwinder2203: We’ll always have our weekend in paradise. Thanks Simmo. Go well. 💙
@karl72465: Sad times but at least he wasn’t sacked club legend
@markcduffell: Sad day. Simmo has given so much to the club and left us with some great memories but unfortunately, this is the right call. Thanks Simmo. You’ll always be a club legend. Will never forget Wembley but it’s time for the next phase. #COYB
@Matthewgaskell9: Gutted it hasn’t worked out but must say I’m absolutely delighted the staff are gone aswell
@Cazzum01: Thanks for everything Paul, nobody can take away all those amazing memories from 2022 and 2023. Some of the best days I’ve had as a blues fan in that time. Legend 💙💙
@Crispo__: Categorically a club legend, a shame how it’s ended. However the last 18 months have gone, I haven’t forgotten where we were before he came in, thank you for everything Super Paul Simpson 🫡
@JRBulman: I think the majority desperately wanted him to turn it around but it just wasn’t working anymore and had become inevitable. I thank him & Gav Skelton for their efforts & for masterminding the escape from relegation & to promotion via Wembley.
@bluearmy94: Sad, club legend and all round nice bloke, really wanted him to succeed but it wasn’t working. It’s the right decision, his biggest mistake was employing family! That very rarely works in any environment.
@CameronEllis_: Needed to happen. Gregg Abbott next guys @CastleSportsGrp he’s been dropping the ball for a long time even when he managed he let gems go. Brave decision and needed. Mark Bridge Wilkinson, Gateshead gaffer is a good start to consider
@NHolmesRyan: Agree with many of the comments on here. Everyone wanted it to work for Simmo given he is local and what he has achieved. Baffled how what should be a great team isn’t. Will never forget Wembley. Thanks Simmo

Just as one ex-player hastened his arrival, another has hastened his exit.
In football, there will always be highs & lows. I’ll always be grateful for the many highs. Thank you, Paul đź’™
