Favourites for Sheffield Wednesday manager

After Steve Bruce left Sheffield Wednesday for Newcastle United this week, we’ve taken a look at who are favourites for the job at Hillsborough.

The Owls’ statement read, “The Club is disappointed to learn via public statement issued by Newcastle United that it has appointed former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence.

“Regardless of the fact that the staff resigned from their positions with the Club on Monday, there remains outstanding legal issues to be resolved between the club and the staff and Newcastle United. The Club is currently considering its position and taking the appropriate legal advice.

“No further comment will be made by the Club concerning this matter.”

The season starts in just over two weeks with the transfer window closing on the 8th of August following a recent vote to change the date.

Take a look at who are the top six favourites below and on the next page.

6) GARY ROWETT

Gary Rowett is currently without a job after he was sacked by Stoke City in January last season after failing to mount a promotion challenge, instead took them to 14th before he then departed.

As well as the Potters, the former footballer has previously managed Derby County, Burton Albion and Birmingham City.

Current odds on Sky Bet: 7/1

5) GARRY MONK

Former Sheffield Wednesday player Garry Monk was most recently the favourite for the Newcastle United, that of course ended up going to Steve Bruce.

That was after Garry recently left Birmingham City due to his relationship between himself and chief executive Xuandong Ren breaking down, Ren was dissatisfied with Monk’s playing style and the manager was unhappy at the sale of the Jota.

Monk has also managed Leeds United and Middlesbrough, where he had a win percentage at over 45 at both clubs, better than at Swansea and Birmingham.

Last season he guided the St Andrews club to 17th in the 2018/19 season, though would have been a few positions higher had they not been handed a nine point deduction.

Current odds on Sky Bet: 7/1

4) CHRIS HUGHTON

Chris Hughton had his contract terminated by Brighton & Hove Albion – the team he won came Championship runners up with in 2017 – on the 13th May despite avoiding the drop from the Premier League.

However he won just three of their last 23 league games and none of their final nine.

He has also managed Norwich City, Birmingham City and Newcastle United (won the Championship with in 2010).

Current odds on Sky Bet: 7/1
