Fans were left loving the way Birmingham City announce they’ve smashed League One record to buy Jay Stansfield from Fulham.
The 21 year old scored 13 goals in 37 appearances during a loan spell at Birmingham for the 2023/24 season, which saw him win the club’s player of the season award.
He also was on the scoresheet against the Blues in midweek, helping Fulham to a 2-0 victory in the Carabao Cup second round in midweek.
But on transfer deadline day, Birmingham City finally managed to get the deal they wanted, breaking the League One transfer record at the same time, signing striker Jay Stansfield from Fulham for more than Β£15m.
And this comes after they had already broken the League One transfer record twice in this transfer window prior to completing the deal to sign Stansfield. Here’s how they announced him and wait until the end…

Birmingham City have agreed an extraordinary fee with Fulham for Jay Stansfield. Iβm told itβs a guaranteed Β£15m, plus Β£5m in add-ons, a 20% sell-on clause, and a Β£100k bonus if they are promoted to Championship. Absolutely smashes the League One record. #BCFC #FFC
β Sam Dean (@SamJDean) August 30, 2024
According to Sky Sports News, it is an initial Β£15m, but sources in Birmingham say it is less.
Christoph Klarer and Willum Thor Willumsson had fees in the region of Β£3.5m, then Stansfield’s incoming well and truly smashed that figure.
Stansfield said to BluesTV: “I am absolutely buzzing. It has been a long time coming, I think.
“When I left, from the awards evening, the reaction from all the fans, even though it was a really tough season for Birmingham as a club and it didn’t end the way we wanted it to end, I thought it was only right for me to come back here and take on this next challenge, and be part of such an amazing club and amazing project.”
When asked about coming ‘home’, he explained why the move was about securing a solid future for his football career.
“I think that’s the main thing. I am at the point now where I just want to play football as much as possible and I think being here and with everything going around the Club, the project of this football club it was the perfect place to come in and really enjoy my football and settle down.
“There is only one outcome I think and that is to get this club to the Premier League, if that’s in two years, if that’s in four years, we will see where it is, but that is the main aim.”
