Fans left stunned amid speculated managerial changes at Southampton, Sunderland and Swansea

Fans have been left stunned amid speculated managerial changes at the likes of Southampton, Sunderland and Swansea on Wednesday afternoon.

Sunderland supporters have their say on Tony Mowbray’s future, with talkSPORT going as far as naming possible candidates to replace him.

According to new reports, Southampton are considering hiring Mowbray to help the club plan an immediate return to Premier League.

Football League World claim that the Saints have both Mowbray as well as Swansea City’s Russell Martin in mind for their next manager after relegation from Premier League.

Ruben Selles is now expected to leave the club, having been in charge since Nathan Jones’ departure in February 2023.

Mowbray’s contract with the Stadium of Light outfit runs until 2024. However, his future as the Black Cats boss has been called into question recently.

Despite the fact that he was able to take Sunderland through the play-ffs despite all odds, the board are said to be looking for a new manager.

Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle, Francesco Farioli and Gerhard Stuber are among the contenders to replace him.

But Sunderland fans are adamant they want Mowbray in.

But Mowbray’s post-match speech is said to be giving Sunderland players a fear of his potential exit, according to Alan Nixon.

Mowbray said he was proud of his players and the club’s supporters but, asked about his future in the immediate aftermath of the defeat at Luton, he said: “I’ve enjoyed it, but who knows what my future holds. Let’s wait and see.

“Do I want to be here next season? I do, yes.

“But let’s wait and see how it goes, and what the summer brings. I don’t know what will happen next. I’ll just get on with it. I’ve got a contract so I’ll just keep going.”

He added: “We knew their strengths and we knew our potential weaknesses and they came to fruition really. I’ve just told them how proud I am of them all. I’m proud of the supporters, proud of the city of Sunderland. It’s amazing what they’ve done this year and unfortunately we ran out of the ammunition of what you need in a football team.

“I’ve always said that football teams are made up of speed, quality, size, physicality and talent. We were missing a few ingredients in our team. We have to give them lots of credit. They were hugely committed of course as you would expect. They scored from the set plays which we knew were our Achilles heel. The main message is how proud I am of the team.”

Mowbray on what Sunderland need to do this summer, as per Northern Echo: “Of course, the club has to build now and they have to keep their best players. We have to keep growing. That’s football. We have to keep building and improving if we want to be a force.

“I can reel off a list of the teams that are going to be hoping to win promotion from the Championship next season – Southampton are going to be massively strong, and then if it’s Leicester, Leeds or Everton, what about them?

“You’ve got Ipswich Town coming the other way, a club I know really well with 30,000 fans coming every week and a good coach and good players. Then you’ve got West Brom, Norwich City and whoever doesn’t go up out of Luton, Middlesbrough or Coventry.

“It’s a really tough league, and we’ve done incredibly well to be in and around and above some of those teams this season. We need to keep getting better to do it again.”

“I think we’ve been saying that we’re going in the right direction. We came out of League One, and maybe consolidation might have been what the club was thinking about.

“And yet the team has punched above their weight with that, with the backing of the people who come to the away games and come to the Stadium of Light and watch us every week. We’ve managed to punch above mediocrity. We’ve gone close, but unfortunately, we just fell short.”

As mentioned, fans are left stunned amid speculated managerial changes at Southampton, Sunderland and Swansea…

@willmiller1989: Wow. Bit harsh?

@branalvere: He should be getting a 3 year contract he’s done an outstanding job not one Sunderland supporter wants him to leave

@punternumber1: What? My dad is a Sunderland supporter so I’ve been watching them for years and it’s the best football I’ve ever seen them play under Mowbray.

@SteveRose1968: Seriously? Football’s gone.

@DanielDaws1: With a couple of signings in the right areas I’d expect these to seriously challenge for Promotion next season. Fire Mowbray and I suspect that’s goes tits up. Would be mental to change manager after such a positive season.

@sarah_WBAx: Ridiculous, had so many injuries, youngest squad in the champ and got them in the play offs after just being promoted, they’ve barely had a striker most of the season, if he had a fancy Brazilian name this wouldn’t even be a thing 😩

@Harrystott10: Done a brilliant job, shouldn’t even be questioning his job after getting a newly promoted side 1 game away from a place in the premier league 🤦‍♂️

@DazWareham: Absolutely crazy if this is true. Sunderland have punched well above their weight this season with the youngest most inexperienced squad in the championship and they made the playoffs. I’d say that’s an incredible job he’s done and should be rewarded with a new contract.

@Lyons_Tea123: That’s absolute madness if true. That squad is about to lose a couple of players and is likely working on a limited budget. There is no better manager to work with youth than Tony Mowbray. Done a fantastic job there and completely overachieved this season.

@TheZ1000: What an absolutely terrible decision if they decide to sack Mowbray. No one thought that Sunderland would make it to the play-offs and be this close to a Premier League return. Mowbray has done a great job.

@StewartWard80: I am a Boro fan, and I can not believe the owners at Sunderland. He has had a patch work quilt of a side this, and he has worked wonders. Imagine if he had the backing of the ownership. This year play offs is a massive achievement.

@BenjawiBen: Even though they’re rivals, I’m looking at this and thinking this makes no sense. They weren’t expected to make the play offs as far as I’m aware, so they’ve done way better than expected. And they’re missing their main striker. Mowbray has done surprisingly well with them.

@davidbuckleyy_: Ludicrous. Been an absolute pleasure to go to the football this season, which is something that can’t be said for much of the previous decade. Achieving above what we should with half the team out injured #SAFC

@PaulRedman11: This would be an absolute tragedy for us, he and the team have over performed this season, with massive amounts of injuries and the youngest team in the division.I would say that he is the best manager we have had since St Peter Reid. Best group young players since Durbans team

@dinglouis_: That’s ridiculous

@DailyDose0fDan: What is the thinking behind it though? I mean they bring in young kids to train up and Mowbray is suited to that. Why throw that away and bring in someone else unless they are prepared to sign older quality players again. Don’t understand the logic of it.

@SaintRob__: I’m sure that Russell Martin and Tony Mowbray are good options and they are experienced in the Championship, but I can’t help but be underwhelmed by the names that are getting linked with us. Of course we weren’t expecting a Graham Potter, but neither name excites me. Beggars cannot be choosers in our situation, but we need a manager people will get excited by and will get behind. Martin could be linked to us so his agent can gain leverage over Swansea for a contract renewal in fairness. Just want some new energy pumped into the club. There are people on this app a lot more switched on when it comes to Championship managers like Martin, so it will be interesting to see what the majority opinion will be if links continue.

@yana1867: If I was Tony Mowbray I’d tell them to shove it. Who do they think they are? They do realise where they’ve been in recent years? What are they expecting? He has massively overachieved

@CallumSeth7: they’re going to be nowhere near next season when they lose Amad in summer, no idea why their owners think failing in the play offs isn’t good enough. massively overachieved with that squad

@_robertsafc: Poor decision, done so well under circumstances around the squad. Be very harsh to let him go.
