Fans left baffled as Huddersfield manager resigns with immediate effect

Fans have been left baffled as reports claim Huddersfield Town manager Carlos Corberan resigns with immediate effect as pre-season begins.

The Terriers manager, 39, came close to guiding the Championship club to the Premier League after finishing third in last season’s league table.

According to well-placed sources, players have been told that the Spanish coach informed club officials of his intentions to quit and it’s believed that Corberan has interest from a rival club.

It would be a huge blow for the club, who have so far signed three players this summer – Will Boyle, David Kasumu and Connor Mahoney.

Burnley, who are now managed by Vincent Kompany, take on Huddersfield in front of the Sky Sports cameras for the opening game of the 2022/23 Championship season.

Previously the head coach of Doxa and Ermis in the Cypriot First Division, Corberán made his coaching breakthrough with Leeds United, where he held roles as first team assistant coach and was the manager of their under-23s side.

In June 2019, it was reported that Corberán would be offered the head coach job at Spanish side Cultural Leonesa, but he decided to stay at Leeds to remain under Marcelo Bielsa.

After the English professional football season was paused in March 2020 due to Impact of the Covid pandemic on association football, the season was resumed during June, Corberán was part of Marcelo Bielsa’s backroom staff in his dual role of 1st Team Coach and Under 23’s Head Coach as Leeds earned promotion to the Premier League and also become the Championship title winners for the 2019-20 season in July after the successful resumption of the season.

In July 2020, Corberán was offered the position of head coach at Huddersfield Town, which he accepted and his appointment was confirmed on the 23rd of July, but missed the opening game of the 2021–22 season due to a positive Covid test, but was still in charge of first-team affairs from his home.

Of the 102 games he was in charge of for the Terriers, he saw 38 wins, 28 draws and 36 defeats, giving him a 37.25 win percentage.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Huddersfield Town can confirm that Carlos Corberán has today resigned from his position as Head Coach.

The 39-year-old was appointed to the role in July 2020 and, following a 20th place finish in his first season, coached the team to the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final in the last campaign.

However, he notified the Club of his decision to leave, alongside his long-term colleague Jorge Alarcón, on Wednesday evening.

Head of Football Operations Leigh Bromby commented:

“It is with sadness that we have accepted Carlos’ resignation. He was obviously a big part of what was a fantastic season in 2021/22, but he has subsequently come to us over the last 24 hours and made it clear that he doesn’t think he is the man to take us forward.

“The timing is disappointing, with our preparations for the new season already under way. However, we have worked very hard here over the last few years to build a coaching and support structure around the First Team that gives us continuity and stability when there’s change. We’ve also created succession plans for every eventuality.

“Danny Schofield will now step up to lead the team. He knows the Club, the players, our coaching programme, and our structure as well as anyone and is ideally positioned to give us continuity. Danny is highly rated and well respected across football and, this summer, turned down an opportunity to become Head Coach of a club in the top division of a European league because he believes in what we’re doing here. His work at our Club has been outstanding, and he’s earned this opportunity.

“Danny will work with our fantastic staff, including Narcis Pèlach, as we prepare for our first game against Burnley on 29 July.

“I would like to thank Carlos for his hard work at the Club. I’ve really enjoyed working closely with him over the last two years, and I wish him the very best for the future.”

Dean Hoyle added:

“I know the timing of this news will come as a real shock to our supporters. We felt the same when Carlos asked to meet Leigh on Wednesday evening and made it clear he would be leaving, as we have been working together to plan for the new season.

“Everyone at the Club sincerely thanks Carlos for his hard work over the last two seasons and for the way he has helped to take us forward. I really hope he goes on to have a great career.

“Town fans all know that success in football is never a simple, straight line, and there are always moments around the corner that test you. This is one of those moments, but I honestly believe we are in a great position as a Club.

“I know change like this, particularly when it’s out of the blue, can be worrying for supporters. I assure everyone that we will do all we can to continue to drive this Club forward after a really positive 12 months. We need to have trust in what we have built at the Club and keep faith in what we collectively believe we can achieve through hard work and purpose.

“I’ve talked about how collectively this Club has rediscovered our Terrier Spirit, and it’s times like this when we must show exactly what that means. It’s about togetherness; everyone coming together to pull in one direction for the greater good of Huddersfield Town. It’s about standing up to any challenge, together, and powering through it. It’s about belief in the people we have here and what they are capable of. It’s about a positive, can-do attitude.

“All I ask is for everyone to get right behind Danny, the staff, and the players, as you always do, as we enter the new season.”

As mentioned, fans have been left baffled as the Huddersfield manager resigns with immediate effect, here’s the reaction…

@GarethJD: That’s a shame if it happens, did a decent job with them last season

@kemp_luke: If Corberan is leaving because of a lack of investment then it’s a ridiculous reason to leave! 3/4 of the league are under strict financial constraints (hence why there’s hardly any transfers) so there must be something else going on #htafc

@jordy_0712: Carlos leaving is very surprising I wonder what has gone on for that to happen. #htafc as usual we mess up something good for the club. Not sure who could possibly come in and do a better job

@GraemeRayner2: What the actual fuckery is going on? #HTAFC

@TRDicko: CC wasn’t DH’s man. So DH wasn’t able to bask in any CC glow. So he’s made life difficult for him & the club. Pretty darn pathetic behavior tbh. #htafc

@winteringham1: Is this real???

@I_am_Adz: Carlos leaving is fucking disastrous. Shows we are just bringing in freebies. A manger can only take that for so long. Question is…. where is he going? #htafc
